US throws pennies at massive UN debt (Archive)​

Washington still reportedly owes the intergovernmental organization billions of dollars in mandatory funding.

The US has paid $160 million towards the more than $4 billion it owes the UN in the first payment since President Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

The UN faces a mounting financial crisis, while the US president positions his Gaza Board of Peace to “oversee” the global body. Some experts have already warned that the initiative could undermine the UN.

Washington’s latest contribution is a “partial payment of its past dues,” Reuters cited a UN spokesperson as saying on Thursday.

The money is a small fraction of the $2.19 billion the US reportedly owes for the UN regular budget and $2.4 it owes for current and past peacekeeping missions. The US is responsible for around 95% of the overdue payments to the UN’s regular budget, Reuters quoted the organization's spokesperson as saying.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the UN is facing a looming crisis which could end in “imminent financial collapse,” unless member states started making mandatory payments or the organization overhauled its financial rules.

The US, the organization's biggest contributor, cut voluntary funding to multiple UN programs and cut aid spending last year, as part of Trump’s ‘America First’ policy pivot. In December, Washington pledged $2 billion for the UN’s humanitarian programs, warning it to “adapt or die.” By comparison, the US had contributed $14.1 billion in 2024.

In a speech on Thursday, Trump again criticized the UN as ineffective.

“The United Nations… is going to be much stronger and the ‘Board of Peace’ is going to almost be looking over the United Nations and making sure it runs properly,” he said at the inaugural Board of Peace event in Washington.

The board would help the struggling UN “money-wise” and make sure it’s “viable,” he said.

The Board of Peace was established to guide the stabilization of Gaza following the Israel-Hamas war. UN experts, however, have argued that oversight by such a body is “reminiscent of colonial practices,” due to it being chaired by Trump, rather than being under transparent multilateral or UN control.

lol shut the fuck up retard. the UN charter was drafted in large part by the US, on US soil, and the US has been the majority contributor since its inception. the UN is also just about completely fucking useless in the post-Cold War era, it serves basically no purpose, what's the last major thing the UN even did? sending peacekeeping troops to some African shithole to intervene in a conflict between warlords? send an angry letter to the DPRK about their nuclear program or whatever? send an angry letter to Trump because muh fascism? send a bunch of aid trucks to Gaza only for them to get blown up by the IDF without retaliation? the UN is a fucking joke and it's laughable for them to seethe and mald about the US government not paying their share when the other member states skip payments all the fucking time. the US has propped up that organization literally since its inception purely to serve American global interests. now they fancy themselves some kind of high-minded, independent European governmental body while scolding the US for not simply cutting the checks without question. eat shit faggots.

That’s because it’s meant to. When an institution is throughly captured, it’s been hollowed out and is being worn like a skinsuit. When the house is nothing but a shell with termites, yet the institution USED to serve a purpose before its capture and the purpose is still needed, you disempower the captured husk and you stand up a replacement.

We can do this for many many husks.
 
So what are the UN going to do about it?
Send a strongly worded email with CAPITALS or sue the US, who can just turn around and say they don't recognise their authority?

For at least a decade and a half, I've been a staunch proponent of the "come and take it" defence against debt collectors. It's like a small personal victory, seeing something everyone told me was retarded and insane play out as official White House policy. "But oh, boohoohoo, our rules-cringe order is imploding," they say, "if you won't pay this one, what if you won't pay that and the other too?" Come and take it! It's really that simple: if someone owes you money and won't pay up, kick their door down, point guns at them, and drag them to court, or delegate that responsibility to someone who's legally allowed to perform it on your behalf. The UN has been a shell of itself for a really long time. First address the corruption issues before ever complaining about America taking our funding away from you.
 
I can't fully get behind this unless Trump also called up the secretary-general and said "SONIC IS DEAD".
