But most of that stuff isn't normal in Japan, though. Some young women speak and dress in a weird way, in the same way as tumblrinas do in the US with their "I'm done adulting", but if you go into the bank the female clerks aren't going to squeak childish phrases at you while wearing indecent outfits.

It's a much more reserved society than the US and UK in general, and people tend to be formal unless they know each other well, especially in white collar business, which does have a weird culture but in a different way. I'd say it was almost the opposite of what you claim.

I agree, I was talking about the niche stuff and some more cultural things like the sense of humor and language puns, not the society as a whole.

edit:For example, anime is already consider a niche in Japan itself, and within anime, there is some more niche than others. Also I mentioned mainstream things like the Seven Samurai to have broad western appeal(samurais in general do, especially since the west loves swords and martial arts already, and their similarity with knights), its Godzilla tier. Something like word play, dialect comedy and language puns etc(especially in the likes you would find in Rakugo, since many young Japanese don't get some of the humor depending on how niche or archaic), is something that people wouldn't understand if they did not know the language.

It really does depend on the cartoon. Most Japanese people have seen a cartoon at some point, and series like Dragon Ball and Fist Of The North Star are genuinely popular. "Anime" is a general word for cartoons there, from any country. The problem is that people often think that the weird or creepy cartoons are popular, which they aren't. Those are shunned by society, and with good reason.

Yeah, the average Japanese person wouldn't go around proclaiming their love for anime like Kodomo no Jikan in public any time soon.

In the 1980s there was a serial child killer who was supposed to be obsessed with cartoons and horror films, though how much he actually was is debatable. The association would be strong in the case of creepy cartoons like those.

It would be funny if neckbeards did, though.

Since when have girl fandoms given a crap about canon gay. In fact it's usually more popular when it's ambigious, since they can make up their own pairings, and look for their own 'clues'.

Luke Skywalker was "confirmed" gay by Mark Hamill.

I'm sure it was totally sincere and not done to appease a large body of certain someones at all.

No, they'll erect a monument to it instead.

When enough of its fan base screams 'muh representation!!!' for it not being shown on-screen, or (God forbid) the suspected character being evil as hell, I figure it'd be important.

(But then again, Free!! wasn't super bad on the gay moments- it was just an example I could yank out of my ass. But I don't apologise for VLD crybabies and everyone on the extreme ends of the debacle that was Killing Stalking.)

Don't forget the cartoon about the gay sextuplets.
On my luck, any porny stuff I've seen for Osomatsu-san only had one bro at a time. But anyone that ships BLmatsu is part of a blight upon anime.

Not wanting to ruin the joke, that's a character from One Piece, which is the biggest selling comic series in the country's history with over 300 million issues sold. It's like having a statue of Garfield the cat. Kodomo No Jikan is horrible paedo pandering which most people are fortunate enough not to know exists.

Some cartoons are legitimately mainstream in Japan, but neckbeards often like the creepy ones which definitely aren't.

I dunno. I've seen some stupid Osomatsu fangirls defending BLMatsu. Either because of "representation", or because they're a bunch of horny bitches that need to ship everything they see. It doesn't help that the show enables their fetishes, tbh.

The original author of Osomatsu-kun certainly didn't think that way either, but I guess that's just what happens when the best of intentions leads to stretching the context of it.

I'm guessing I'm missing something, and BLMatsu isn't a black identity extremist protesting against police brutality. Or someone who works for the Bureau of Land Management.

The worst part is that they're all identical brothers. :c
All because someone didn't have a dirty mind when he thought using sextuplets wouldn't lead to this. Apparently the first recorded birth of sextuplets didn't happen until 1968, roughly 5 years after Akatsuka first penned his 6 boy team, so I guess he was somewhat forward-thinking there. Though off-topic, one thing the manga did give the world, if only indirectly, was Godzilla's odd little victory dance in Godzilla vs. Monster Zero, itself, based on Iyami's signature "Sheee!"

I always wondered if Gamestop selling non game related nerd stuff is due to the fact that most people buy games digitally now. Unless it's a popular upcoming game with a special edition with collectables and features I notice everyone just downloads games from Steam and other services. There's less of an incentive to visit a store and buy the physical product when the digital version is just a click away. So stores like Gamestop are stuck selling pop culture merchandise to fill the void.

Also I never see anyone buy those Funko Pops. So many stores have an entire wall filled to the top with these things and it's creepy. The boxes always look like they're about to crash down and crush somebody.

Still it's pretty telling how the incentive to get out of the house more often gets cut severely because of the way convenience has made it that possibly from the start.

It's not just video games either. So many electronic stores that sold DVDs and music closed down ever since services like Itunes and Netflix came about. It was only a matter of time before video games started to feel the effects too. And even back then these stores started to sell pop culture merchandise to keep afloat before eventually shutting down.

Apparently GameStop isn't doing very well and a lot of stores have been closing from what I've read.

I suppose for me it's rather sad to see such institutions kinda go the way of the dodo like that. I suppose I'll have a nice story to tell my grandkids one day of a world they'll never see at all.
