Jesus christ, there was a geek CLUB? I remember just trying to use the lunch hour to quietly slip away to the library to read or maybe join a quiet hidden D&D game going on right at the back so no one could see what you were doing.

Yeah, sure, fine. I'll start.

For those wondering, the "GEEK Club" (spelled in caps) was little more than an excuse for the chemistry teachers to circlejerk about Doctor Who with the students who were fans of the show. But, since that doesn't sound good to the school board, it was turned into an all-around "nerd subculture" group. How it worked was, the club had full access to an entire hall of rooms, with each room having a different "activity". Movies and TV, Games, Tabletop RPGs, and Books. Now, guess which one was the first to close? If you guessed books, you'd be correct. Nobody there had actually read anything, it was all regurgitated Tumblr and Reddit nonsense. Movies and TV was so they could constantly play Doctor Who, and "Tabletop RPGs" was just for GURPS and Munchkin. Also they sold snacks, because reasons.

Now, the main event, and the reason why 90% of the people in the club attended, was the Gaming room. Most of the time it was Smash Bros, but one day it was mixed up and someone brought an NES. Most of the people there didn't know what an NES was and wanted to play Call of Duty instead. Ended up playing Zelda. Fun stuff.

Anyway, they tried to force group activities once in a while. The most prevalent one was the "costume party". I went as Mike Hammer, which no one recognized. Oglooger went as a personification of Nazi Germany. Or Italy, one of the two, and won third place because people thought it was Hetalia. In any case, the reason it sticks out for me is how many Homestuck cosplayers were there. My God, I had no idea how infected my high school was before that point. I was just in awe of all the autism in the room. I eventually decided to get away from it all and just play Rock Band. I was the only one that liked Rock, so I ended up being made to play terrible pop nonsense.

Fun times.
 
The hip thing for millennials to do than being in dead in jobs and living with their parents in a crumbling society.
 
From the weeaboo end of the nerd spectrum, nothing is more infuriating than hearing someone sperg about how much they love Japanese food like Pocky or that stupid soda with the little glass ball in it as if they don't taste like garbage. Case in point I'm pretty sure Chris did exactly this on a facebook post after a con once. Both those things are so damn ubiquitous I'm pretty sure I've seen them big chain super markets and Gamestop.

sure the slow subsumption of niche interests into shallow, mainstream pop cultural garbage is annoying but it'll eventually go out of vogue once it stops being profitable

Am i the only one who find people who are over 15 and use those game/comic/tv show tshirts and collect toys and game related shit as immature and insufferable?.

Sadly they are a dime a dozen in my college, seems the fashion of now is to wear the ugliest most childish clothing and have unkempt hair and beards.

I actually found alot of the girlfriends buying the guys gaming themed clothes, telling him to get this haircut, telling him to grow a beard. Buying them weird useless reddit tier crap that just sits on their desk. It seems surprising how much influence they have. But they are usually the ones shopping for clothes and presents.

I've never called myself a nerd or a geek. I hate those terms because today they have lost all meaning.

When there is gatekeeping it's because people don't want their communities overrun with tumblr kids and casuals who don't know anything and can't be bothered to learn.

No one is stopping you from buying games, comics, collectibles or anything else. I honestly think some people secretly love "muh gatekeeping" because it gives them an excuse to whine about the secret boys club that they aren't a part of when said club doesn't really exist. Some communities are just a little wary of letting newbies in. But that doesn't mean they're all evil gatekeepers.

i dont know its just so fucking depressing, 99% of my college either waste their lives on netflix or on league of legends, and go to a bar.
Thats it, their entire existence aside from college stuff is that.
Their attention span is so fucking low its amazing.
My computer engineer roomates take a entire 30 seconds to read 5 lines of text, just outright refuse to read the news past the headline, cant watch a video longer than 2 minutes.
The only place i can discuss shit is really here, everyone else irl just isnt there, you know?.
