Voting in the US midterm elections is now underway.

UpdatedUpdated 27 September

In this article...
Americans have started to cast their ballots in a vote that could shape the rest of Donald Trump's presidency.

Although the US midterm elections are technically held on 6 November, early voting has already started in a handful of states.

Minnesota was the first state to allow early in-person voting on 21 September, with a handful of key states following, including New Jersey, California and Arizona.

Thirty-five states and the District of Columbia offer some form of early voting, meaning every day until 6 November counts for Democrats and Republicans.

It's been an inauspicious beginning to the voting season for Mr Trump and his Republican Party, which continue to struggle under the weight of near-constant self-imposed crises and chaos.

80 per cent chance of winning back the chamber.

Republicans have a 1 in 5 chance of keeping control of the House, while Democrats have about a 4 in 5 chance of winning control of the House. https://t.co/lyNh30TEIw pic.twitter.com/O38qtMPpIz

The Senate though is likely to be retained by the Republicans.

According to CNN, the Democrats are defending some two dozen seats, including 10 in states where Mr Trump secured victory in 2016, and five of those where he won resoundingly.

FiveThirtyEight gives the Democrats just a 30 per cent chance of taking the Senate.

The Democrats could also use their numbers to set up House select committees targeting the president.

"They will have an opportunity to set up special panels and committees to essentially smear President Trump," United States Studies Centre research fellow Dougal Robinson told SBS News in April.

Mr Robinson pointed to the Benghazi committee set up by the Republicans against Hillary Clinton in 2014 to further investigate the fatal 2012 terrorist attack on two US government facilities in Libya.

Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Once seen as cruising to an easy vote - fulfilling Mr Trump's key promise to stack the Supreme Court with conservative justices - a string of sexual assault allegations has turned the Kavanaugh decision into all-out political war.

According to CNN's national political reporter Eric Bradner, the scandal and lukewarm response from some Republicans to Mr Kavanaugh's accusers could "drive suburban women away in midterms".

I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 21, 2018
Analysts also point to Robert Mueller's investigation as an ongoing potential source of political curveballs.

Mr Mueller has already indicted more than 30 people in connection with his probe into whether members of Mr Trump's campaign colluded with Russia to help get the real estate tycoon elected.

And speculation has swirled in recent days that Mr Trump may fire embattled deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein - who oversees the Russia collusion probe.

Doubts over how long Mr Rosenstein can keep the job have swirled since shock media reports that he once suggested secretly recording Mr Trump to collect evidence for ousting him under a constitutional amendment for presidents unfit to remain in office.

Mr Rosenstein's firing - and Mr Trump possibly putting someone more pliable in his place - would set off alarm bells over the future independence of a probe, which has the potential to rock both the midterms and the entire Trump presidency.

US wants ‘partnership, not domination’ in Australia and region[/paste:font]

A report co-authored by Mr Robinson predicted after the midterms, Congress would be highly unlikely to support a US re-entry to the Trans-Pacific Partnership - a trade deal between 11 Pacific nations including Australia and New Zealand which Mr Trump pulled the US out of last year.

Another issue that may affect Australia is that if the Democrats retake the House, it is likely to lead to lower defence spending.

How will Trump keep his voter base energized? "More Winning."

TRUMP HAS A TWO WORD RESPONSE WHEN REPORTER ASKS HIM HOW HE WILL KEEP GOP BASE ENERGIZED
5:52 PM 10/10/2018
Benny Johnson | Reporter At Large

President Donald Trump made portions of the White House press corps chuckle with his response on how he intends to keep Republican voters fired up after the ultimately successful confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

“How do you keep your base energized now that you have this Kavanaugh victory?” one reporter asked. Tuesday was the first day that Kavanaugh sat on the court after a contentious battle over his nomination.

“More winning,” Trump said.

Trump was leaving the White House on his way to a campaign rally Tuesday night when he took questions from reporters in the White House driveway.

The president was also asked about the mobs of paid progressive protesters that took over Capitol Hill during the contentious debate over Kavanaugh’s confirmation. Trump was specifically asked about the intense “energy” of the protesters.

“A lot of those were paid protesters. You saw that they are all unhappy because they haven’t been paid yet,” Trump alleged about the protesters. (RELATED: Trump Has A Theory Why The Anti-Kavanaugh Protesters Are So Mad)

Trump brought up his new trade deal with Canada and Mexico as a major policy win. “Our deal with Mexico and Canada was fantastic,” Trump said. “China wants to make a deal so badly. We will see where it goes. But I don’t think they are ready.”

MATT DRUDGE WARNS OF MIDTERM BLOODBATH: TRUMP TO LOSE ’60 SEATS IN THE HOUSE LIKE OBAMA DID’
2:41 PM 09/14/2018
Peter Hasson | Reporter

Conservative news giant Matt Drudge on Friday made a somber prediction about Republicans’ chances in the November midterm elections, predicting President Donald Trump will see his party lose 60 seats in the House of Representatives.

Drudge, who runs the influential Drudge Report, compared the upcoming midterms to the electoral bloodbath Democrats suffered in the 2010 midterm elections under former President Barack Obama.

“Trump and Obama both have 47% approval at this time of presidency, according to Rasmussen. Trump will also lose 60 seats in the House like Obama did during first midterm!” Drudge wrote on Twitter. (RELATED: Democrats Should Immediately Abolish ICE After Retaking Congress)

He added cryptically: “Unless…”

Democrats have to gain 23 House seats in November in order to flip the lower chamber. Democrats have an 83 percent chance of retaking the House, according to FiveThirty Eight.

Mark Taylor (The Trump Prophecies): Most Important Midterm Elections In All Of US History
July 30, 2018 29 3159

Mark Taylor says the upcoming 2018 elections are the most important mid-term elections in all of America’s history. Here’s why…

Mark Taylor interviewed by Greg Hunter on USA Watchdog

Mark Taylor, author of the popular book “The Trump Prophecies,” contends, “If you are part of the army of God, you need to be ready also because there are going to be politicians that are going to resign. We have had the biggest number of resignations probably in history. This midterm election is going to be huge. This is going to be a red tsunami. They keep talking about the blue wave. I think it’s going to be a blue drip, a leaky faucet, and that is all they are going to get. You have had more resignations than we have ever seen. Now is the time to go in and capture this ground and hold it for the Kingdom of God. . . . It’s not a left or right thing. God is moving us towards a place of righteousness. That’s what’s happening right now. So, he’s going to be replacing these people. If you are called to be a judge, senator, congressman or a council person, I don’t care what level local, state or federal, take your place and get ready. If you are in the Army of God and you don’t vote, you need to get off your behind and register to vote. These are going to be the most important midterm elections in America’s history—period.”

In closing, Taylor says, “I don’t think there is going to be another Democrat in the White House for a long time, if ever again. I believe you are seeing the death of the Democrat party right now.”

Join Greg Hunter as he goes One-on-One with Mark Taylor, co-author of “The Trump Prophecies,” which has been made into a movie that is releasing in early October.

Honestly, is anyone else getting huge laughs from the fact, the right, is acting the same as the left in 2016? Just endless screams about election fraud, but it's different kind, like the tumblrites we're acting like broken, crying snowflakes, the American right on the hand, has the biggest fucking persecution complex ever. Just more proof about both sides.

In any case, the pure salt and tears from /pol/ have been more then worth it, I say.

Not really because there isn’t enough

im still waiting for the rioting and vandalism and melodramatic screaming to the heavens, but i guess your right

On the one hand, I kinda sympathize with the voting fraud sperging because the DNC has made it all too apparent they really want to just import a more compliant base than the damn middle-class white people, but, at the same time, the evidence is fucking scant at best and people are delving into pretty dumb conspiracy theories about McCain somehow nuking the whole party in Arizona from beyond the grave to excuse McSally having an almost Ocasio-Cortez-tier terrible sense of political timing.

Arizona was never really much of a staunchly Republican state to begin with, so I don't know why people have been losing their asses over it. As for the former, well, there's been plenty of indictments like this one surrounding campaign fraud getting rolled out of the DOJ for the last month or two, it's just not making the headlines because everyone was too busy slap-fighting over the midterms and now everyone's too busy raising Holy Hell over the recounts in Florida.

It probably wouldn't' be that much conspiracy shit if these surprise ballot boxes didn't always favor one side. There's also Brenda Snipes having repeatedly proven to be unfit for the job, but probably still around because she has the magical ability to conjure last minute votes in a completely opaque system

I usually agree with your takes a lot, but Arizona is where they fucking invented principled conservatism. This is the home state of Barry Goldwater. Outside of electing Bill in 1996 you have to go pre-Eisenhower to find another year Arizona went blue. They were so Red even Perot couldn't split the 1992 vote enough to flip the state. McCain rode on the coattails of the legend of Arizonan conservatism for damn near 40 years as a Senator, and Jeff Flake rode the same stereotype for the 6 years he could be bothered to commute to DC. Sinema taking the senate seat is pretty huge and a sign of how much your average Arizonan conservative couldn't give a shit about Martha McSally.

Was it voter fraud? Probably not. Is Sinema winning a troubling sign for the future of Arizonan politics? Hell yes, especially if the Arizona GOP can't get it together.

I more-so mean that Arizona isn't one of those "Hard Red" states like Texas in the sense that it's voting history is largely split down the middle, with either side of the aisle winning elections by fairly narrow margins. Even the Presidential election history for the state is almost 50/50 for every single run for quite awhile back. Even the run between Bill Clinton and G.W. Bush was a fairly even split at 36/38 because so many people dove off the stage to vote for Ross Perot, instead.

I've just seen a lot of people in a panic over Arizona as though it was like watching Texas flip, but while AZ's history is right-leaning, it hasn't been overwhelmingly so for quite awhile. I had a much better example somewhere that was breaking it all down to elections at the county level, but for the life of me I can't find the stupid thing now. That or maybe it's just too late in the evening and I have all my facts fucked up.

1)Bitch, you don’t know my life.
2) You don’t get to get haughty about “safe-spaces” when you follow up with this:

is it in my best interest to just avoid this board? i don't want to get hounded by the mob or anything. i only use KF for one of the other boards and stumbled on this thread because it was featured.

Palm Beach County’s voting machines overheat and force recount of more than 170,000 votes

Palm Beach County’s race to recount votes is heating up — literally.

The county’s decade-old ballot-counting machines overheated and gave incorrect totals, forcing the county to restart its recount of about 175,000 early votes., supervisor of Elections Susan Bucher said Tuesday night.

The department has flown in mechanics to repair the machines.

“We’re disappointed by the mechanical problems that are going to cause a further delay in the recount,” Bucher told reporters. “It became evident through the vigorous pace of counting that the machines used for the recount were starting to get stressed.”

The malfunctions resulted in the loss of more than a day’s work.

Bucher said on Monday that her office wouldn’t be able to meet the 3 p.m. Thursday deadline imposed by the state. On Saturday, state election officials said Florida’s 67 counties had to recount the more than 8 million ballots cast statewide because the results in three major elections — U.S. Senate, governor and agriculture commissioner — were under the 0.5 percentage point threshold that triggers the mandatory recount, according to state law.

The case for deadline extension in Palm Beach County was moved to federal court Tuesday, following a motion by attorneys for Secretary of State Ken Detzner.

Leon County Circuit Judge Karen Gievers said she would grant an extension until Nov. 20, after she concluded the county could not possibly meet the deadline with its eight machines. But Detzner’s attorneys filed the motion to move the case before she could issue a written order.

Staffers are working on the recount 24-7.

If the county can’t finish the machine recount, it must submit its original count with an explanation for why it failed to meet the deadline, according to Florida laws governing recounts. The law also instructs canvassing boards to continue and complete the machine recount

This is getting ridiculous. This is the same county that banned cameras from the recount last week and had to be sued.

holy shit i didnt think i'd get mentioned/quoted as many times as i did

i'm willing to respond to all of the people who pinged me, but... am i allowed to do that? seems like it might be considered :autism: or something. i don't really know if that kinda conduct is ok for megathreads
Jesus you sound like a little whiny fag who gets all butthurt if anyone disagrees. Queer.

Of course you're allowed to reply to all of it, just use multiquote to do it one post if you want. However, based on your argumentation so far I don't have very high hopes for your rebuttal.
At least it's funny to see some fag whine about us being big meanies to his little faggy feelings.

i don't really have the aim to convince anyone of anything, nor do i expect my thought process to be clear to anyone on here, lol

i am of the opinion that most KF users are pretty sheltered, and their collective ideology is the result of bouncing from safespace to safespace outside of the dreaded "mainstream media"

to a lot of them, i'm probably some indoctrinated NPC. and hey, they could be right.

i really don't care about my imaginary KF points, but i do want to make sure i'm not being a problem for the people who are plagued with moderating this place

There's that fag talk we talked about. You talk like a fag and your shit's all retarded. Do you cry because of starving pandas in Africa or whales being clubbed by Canadians or whatever. Did da babby not get his soy milk bottle today?

Some Broward county supervisors had been doxxed. https://www.washingtonpost.com/tech...assment/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.3e9162ec72c2

Several pro-Trump Facebook pages and one Twitter account on Monday posted the home address and phone number of the Broward County, Fla., election supervisor who has been the target of blistering criticism from the president and other Republicans amid highly politicized vote recounts.
Posting the home address of Elections Supervisor Brenda Snipes — a tactic called “doxing” — often is a step toward harassment of people in the public spotlight and is prohibited by Facebook, Twitter and most other online platforms. The incident came amid rising vilification of the top election official in Florida’s most Democratic county as the state recounts closely fought elections for the governorship and U.S. Senate.
Facebook confirmed Tuesday that it had removed personal information about Snipes after the incident was reported to the company. It also confirmed a similar incident involving Palm Beach County’s Elections Supervisor Susan Bucher, whose home address and phone number also were posted on a Facebook page.
Twitter declined to comment. Two tweets from an account visible Tuesday morning were deleted by noon.
The posting of the home addresses and phone numbers of the Florida elections officials was discovered by an independent researcher who reported it to The Washington Post on the condition of anonymity, out of fear of becoming a target of online attacks. The Post reviewed all the relevant pages.
Snipes expressed shock and concern that her personal information had been publicized. “That's crazy because I have not done anything wrong,” she said. “We had an excellent election with record turnout. And then it turns into this ugly monster because it gets political."
Bucher declined to comment.

Styx posted a vlog about it.

Assuming TMZ isnt fake news,

http://tmz.com/2018/11/14/michael-avenatti-arrested-domestic-violence-stormy-daniels-attorney/

Now, Avenatti was never a real player, but he did nab headlines occasionally during the past few news cycles. Mostly for stupid shit like grabbing the worst possible con-woman for a run at kavanaugh.

It's even funnier because the bar just cleared him for ethics violations (despite his obviously questionable conduct).

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/ca...into-michael-avenatti-takes-no-further-action

And it's not like the bar in a whacky place like California would ever let an attorney walk, right? :optimistic:

Federal prosecutors reviewing altered election documents tied to Florida Democrats

https://www.politico.com/states/flo...on-documents-tied-to-florida-democrats-695299
By MATT DIXON

Updated 11/14/2018 03:34 PM EST

TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Department of State last week asked federal prosecutors to investigate dates that were changed on official state election documents, the first voting “irregularities” it has flagged in the wake of the 2018 elections.

The concerns, which the department says can be tied to the Florida Democratic Party, center around date changes on forms used to fix vote-by-mail ballots sent with incorrect or missing information. Known as “cure affidavits,” those documents used to fix mail ballots were due no later than 5 p.m. on Nov. 5 — the day before the election. But affidavits released on Tuesday by the DOS show that documents from four different counties said the ballots could be returned by 5 p.m. on Thursday, which is not accurate.

Audio of a Florida Democratic Party caller leaving a voicemail message asking a Palm Beach County voter to fix their vote by mail ballot after Election Day, which is not allowed, was also sent to POLITICO separately. It was not part of the information turned over to federal prosecutors.

Among the counties in question is Broward, which emerged as the epicenter of controversy as three statewide races and three local legislative races went into recounts following the Nov. 6 elections. Republicans have pointed to embattled Broward Elections chief Brenda Snipes' record of past election gaffes in arguing that the largely Democratic country is tilted against them — perhaps fraudulently so.

DOS officials have repeatedly told the media that the monitors they sent to Broward County saw no election fraud. It wasn't until Tuesday that the office revealed publicly that it had turned over information to federal prosecutors.

The information was sent on Nov. 9 by Bradley McVay, DOS’ interim general counsel, who asked that the altered dates be investigated.

“Altering a form in a manner that provides the incorrect date for a voter to cure a defect … imposes a burden on the voter significant enough to frustrate the voter’s ability to vote,” McVay wrote in a letter that was sent Nov. 9 and released publicly on Tuesday. The letter was sent to U.S. Attorneys Christopher P. Canova of the Northern District of Florida, Maria Chapa Lopez of the Middle District of Florida and Ariana Fajardo Orshan in the Southern District of Florida.

The records released by DOS, which is part of Gov. Rick Scott’s administration, point the finger at the Florida Democratic Party. Political parties can get daily lists of people who had their mail-in ballots rejected. Political parties — or anyone else — can also get the publicly available cure affidavits and send them to voters who had a mail-in ballot rejected to encourage them to fix the ballots.

In an email chain released as part of the Department of State's Tuesday document dump, Citrus County Supervisor of Elections Susan Gill last week told DOS officials that a voter who received one of the cure affidavits with the wrong date had also received a call from a number identified as the Tallahassee office of the Florida Democratic Party, an indication the party was reaching out about her vote by mail ballot.

"When I called it, it is the Democratic Party of Florida," she said in a Nov. 8 email to DOS officials.

She went on to write that she thinks the incorrect date was used because whoever sent the cure affidavit mixed up the deadline for cure affidavits with the deadline for provisional ballots. But, she said, "a bigger problem is the fact they actually changed one of the DOE forms."

That change to an official election form was what state officials turned over to federal prosecutors.

Another email included in the DOS document dump included correspondence from Okaloosa County Supervisor of Elections Paul Lux, who also said he believed the affidavits were from the Florida Democratic Party.

"Please pass the word to the FDP that they can't arbitrarily add their own deadline to your form or VBM cures!!" Lux emailed DOS officials on Nov. 9. "This is crazy!"

In a Tuesday interview with POLITICO, Lux said he received an email from someone sending a cure affidavit marked with the wrong date that included a Florida Democratic Party email address. The email does contain the email address votes@FloridaDems.org, which is associated with the party.

Caroline Rowland, an FDP spokesperson, brushed off the issue, saying the Scott administration’s election office was drumming it up as a distraction.

"The courts have already forced Rick Scott to drop a lawsuit after false claims of fraud, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement rejected his desperate attempts to interfere with the important work of counting ballots,” she said in an email. “Now, Scott is once again trying to divert attention and resources from a smooth and successful recount."
