Voting in the US midterm elections is now underway.

UpdatedUpdated 27 September

In this article...
Americans have started to cast their ballots in a vote that could shape the rest of Donald Trump's presidency.

Although the US midterm elections are technically held on 6 November, early voting has already started in a handful of states.

Minnesota was the first state to allow early in-person voting on 21 September, with a handful of key states following, including New Jersey, California and Arizona.

Thirty-five states and the District of Columbia offer some form of early voting, meaning every day until 6 November counts for Democrats and Republicans.

It's been an inauspicious beginning to the voting season for Mr Trump and his Republican Party, which continue to struggle under the weight of near-constant self-imposed crises and chaos.

80 per cent chance of winning back the chamber.

Republicans have a 1 in 5 chance of keeping control of the House, while Democrats have about a 4 in 5 chance of winning control of the House. https://t.co/lyNh30TEIw pic.twitter.com/O38qtMPpIz

The Senate though is likely to be retained by the Republicans.

According to CNN, the Democrats are defending some two dozen seats, including 10 in states where Mr Trump secured victory in 2016, and five of those where he won resoundingly.

FiveThirtyEight gives the Democrats just a 30 per cent chance of taking the Senate.

The Democrats could also use their numbers to set up House select committees targeting the president.

"They will have an opportunity to set up special panels and committees to essentially smear President Trump," United States Studies Centre research fellow Dougal Robinson told SBS News in April.

Mr Robinson pointed to the Benghazi committee set up by the Republicans against Hillary Clinton in 2014 to further investigate the fatal 2012 terrorist attack on two US government facilities in Libya.

Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Once seen as cruising to an easy vote - fulfilling Mr Trump's key promise to stack the Supreme Court with conservative justices - a string of sexual assault allegations has turned the Kavanaugh decision into all-out political war.

According to CNN's national political reporter Eric Bradner, the scandal and lukewarm response from some Republicans to Mr Kavanaugh's accusers could "drive suburban women away in midterms".

I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 21, 2018
Analysts also point to Robert Mueller's investigation as an ongoing potential source of political curveballs.

Mr Mueller has already indicted more than 30 people in connection with his probe into whether members of Mr Trump's campaign colluded with Russia to help get the real estate tycoon elected.

And speculation has swirled in recent days that Mr Trump may fire embattled deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein - who oversees the Russia collusion probe.

Doubts over how long Mr Rosenstein can keep the job have swirled since shock media reports that he once suggested secretly recording Mr Trump to collect evidence for ousting him under a constitutional amendment for presidents unfit to remain in office.

Mr Rosenstein's firing - and Mr Trump possibly putting someone more pliable in his place - would set off alarm bells over the future independence of a probe, which has the potential to rock both the midterms and the entire Trump presidency.

US wants ‘partnership, not domination’ in Australia and region[/paste:font]

A report co-authored by Mr Robinson predicted after the midterms, Congress would be highly unlikely to support a US re-entry to the Trans-Pacific Partnership - a trade deal between 11 Pacific nations including Australia and New Zealand which Mr Trump pulled the US out of last year.

Another issue that may affect Australia is that if the Democrats retake the House, it is likely to lead to lower defence spending.

How will Trump keep his voter base energized? "More Winning."

TRUMP HAS A TWO WORD RESPONSE WHEN REPORTER ASKS HIM HOW HE WILL KEEP GOP BASE ENERGIZED
5:52 PM 10/10/2018
Benny Johnson | Reporter At Large

President Donald Trump made portions of the White House press corps chuckle with his response on how he intends to keep Republican voters fired up after the ultimately successful confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

“How do you keep your base energized now that you have this Kavanaugh victory?” one reporter asked. Tuesday was the first day that Kavanaugh sat on the court after a contentious battle over his nomination.

“More winning,” Trump said.

Trump was leaving the White House on his way to a campaign rally Tuesday night when he took questions from reporters in the White House driveway.

The president was also asked about the mobs of paid progressive protesters that took over Capitol Hill during the contentious debate over Kavanaugh’s confirmation. Trump was specifically asked about the intense “energy” of the protesters.

“A lot of those were paid protesters. You saw that they are all unhappy because they haven’t been paid yet,” Trump alleged about the protesters. (RELATED: Trump Has A Theory Why The Anti-Kavanaugh Protesters Are So Mad)

Trump brought up his new trade deal with Canada and Mexico as a major policy win. “Our deal with Mexico and Canada was fantastic,” Trump said. “China wants to make a deal so badly. We will see where it goes. But I don’t think they are ready.”

MATT DRUDGE WARNS OF MIDTERM BLOODBATH: TRUMP TO LOSE ’60 SEATS IN THE HOUSE LIKE OBAMA DID’
2:41 PM 09/14/2018
Peter Hasson | Reporter

Conservative news giant Matt Drudge on Friday made a somber prediction about Republicans’ chances in the November midterm elections, predicting President Donald Trump will see his party lose 60 seats in the House of Representatives.

Drudge, who runs the influential Drudge Report, compared the upcoming midterms to the electoral bloodbath Democrats suffered in the 2010 midterm elections under former President Barack Obama.

“Trump and Obama both have 47% approval at this time of presidency, according to Rasmussen. Trump will also lose 60 seats in the House like Obama did during first midterm!” Drudge wrote on Twitter. (RELATED: Democrats Should Immediately Abolish ICE After Retaking Congress)

He added cryptically: “Unless…”

Democrats have to gain 23 House seats in November in order to flip the lower chamber. Democrats have an 83 percent chance of retaking the House, according to FiveThirty Eight.

Mark Taylor (The Trump Prophecies): Most Important Midterm Elections In All Of US History
July 30, 2018 29 3159

Mark Taylor says the upcoming 2018 elections are the most important mid-term elections in all of America’s history. Here’s why…

Mark Taylor interviewed by Greg Hunter on USA Watchdog

Mark Taylor, author of the popular book “The Trump Prophecies,” contends, “If you are part of the army of God, you need to be ready also because there are going to be politicians that are going to resign. We have had the biggest number of resignations probably in history. This midterm election is going to be huge. This is going to be a red tsunami. They keep talking about the blue wave. I think it’s going to be a blue drip, a leaky faucet, and that is all they are going to get. You have had more resignations than we have ever seen. Now is the time to go in and capture this ground and hold it for the Kingdom of God. . . . It’s not a left or right thing. God is moving us towards a place of righteousness. That’s what’s happening right now. So, he’s going to be replacing these people. If you are called to be a judge, senator, congressman or a council person, I don’t care what level local, state or federal, take your place and get ready. If you are in the Army of God and you don’t vote, you need to get off your behind and register to vote. These are going to be the most important midterm elections in America’s history—period.”

In closing, Taylor says, “I don’t think there is going to be another Democrat in the White House for a long time, if ever again. I believe you are seeing the death of the Democrat party right now.”

Join Greg Hunter as he goes One-on-One with Mark Taylor, co-author of “The Trump Prophecies,” which has been made into a movie that is releasing in early October.

Well, I admit I'm a little salty with the Dems taking the House.

But considering their incompetence, and how beholden they are to idpol and the fringe, I expect they'll burn through whatever goodwill they have fairly quickly.

Maybe it's for the best. Nobody got what they wanted.

Exhibit A:

View attachment 586403

That's rich, who is changing the narrative? There was going to be a Blue Tsunami™️ according to everyone in the media and anyone who leans left on social media. The only person I saw who was realistic about that was Bernie.

Exhibit A that I showed above is a perfect example of the current Dem situation in America. They project whatever they are guilty of onto their opponents.
Funny since, not only did the Democrats fail to win the senate they lost seats. States went from purple to red. They won’t win back those seats anytime soon so the senate may be lost to them for years all
because of the shenanigans they played with Kavanaugh.

Democrats we’re crying about gerrymandering in regards to the senate :story:.

They’re incredibly stupid and have no plan to govern for the next two years and expect them to flounder. The republicans were supposed to be dead because Trump is satan incarnate supposedly yet if you look at the district map of the US, it’s very red. This country is still very conservative and white and they don’t appreciate being harassed and called bigots or told to accept girl dick.

Well, the senate map next go around is going to be a bit harder for Republicans than dems, but generally there is less turnover in the senate than the house and 2020 is a presidential election, so all bets are off.

So turns out my prediction was correct. Democrat enthusiasm was higher, as it had been ever since Trump was elected.
Everything I predicted came to pass, exactly why and as I said it would. This is not to brag, but perhaps a lesson in partisanship. Look at this post of mine, made in April. It was and is completely correct, and vindicated today, but was received negatively because it hurt people's feelings I suppose.

I think I'll post about it in much more detail as all the results come in, but here's some key takeaways

1) Republicans lost the house despite a good economy, caused by Trump's policy
2) Democrats ran on "fuck Trump and fuck White People" and the voters rewarded them
3) The polls were completely correct.
4) Nate Silver was completely correct.... He is not going away

It wasn't much of an accomplishment however. The Dems will accomplish jack all in the House except make even bigger fools of themselves, assuming they continue on as they have up till now. It wasn't a major upset, and a pathetic reward for running on a "Fuck Trump" platform.

While you are right that the map massively favoured the GOP and that this was a decisive victory for the Dems, calling it a blue wave is a massive stretch. It wasn't a complete hammering and the big name races all ended up red.

Never mind that though. How many votes did Brianna Wu get?

It's not a "decisive" victory. They won the lowest number of seats in modern history for a new Presidents mid term. They just barely made it past the goal posts in the House. They had a fairly substantial loss in the Senate with several long time sitting Senators crushed. They did well in the Governors, but all of their leading edge new progressive wave candidates got wiped out.

Both sides can claim a win. This is what is thought of as a "Status Quo" election. A split decision. With no side having any decisive advantage over the other. Do note the Dems will now show that they are unable to deliver on any of the loopy Promises they made on the campaign trail. "Impeaches!!!" They barely hold the house and there are enough old schoolers in their coalition to kill that idea right off. They saw what it did to Newt Gingrich. Yes there will be "Trump Investigations" but honestly I think the Justice Department Investigations will be much more interesting. Mad Maxine is now in charge of Banking. You know the Congresswoman constantly investigated for Bank Fraud. Chances are Jeff Session's goes bye bye soon and Trump appoints someone more aggressive.

At the end of the day this is the "Least Interesting Most Interesting Election" in our lifetimes. It ranks up there with Geraldo Rivera's Al Capones Vault in terms of impact or guidance.

54-46 Senate.
That's all that matters, really. All of the flip-floppers like Flake and McCain are torn out of the Senate now, and the Senate's in a much better position to push Judges through, especially of the Supreme Court variety. Obviously I would have preferred to flip the House, but if I was forced to pick one or the other when it came to reinforcing a majority, I'd pick the Senate every time.

They can introduce all the articles of impeachment that they want, the Senate will just slap them to the floor, and the Senate's now virtually-impervious to people fucking up the appointment of judges, which is unarguably more important for the country in the long run. All-in-all, I'm not interested in watching these people shove the goal posts around. We were told for months and months and months that there was going to be a massive Blue Wave and all they really managed to do was pick up some seats in the House and lose the Senate even further.

Also Beto lost, anyone who voted against Kavanaugh got knocked on their asses, and we got Big Boss and Raiden Jr. elected, so that alone was worth it, really. The midterms definitely didn't live up to all the fucking hype though, that's for damned sure. Everyone's just kind of wandering around in a confused daze and they're not sure if they should be angry or celebrating. That alone is pretty funny, but if you're a heavily-invested partisan dipshit like me it's like:

This was not "purple" in any way. This was a Blue Wave election, with an incredibly favorable Senate map to GOP.
A wave election looks nothing like this. This is normal midterm House churn against the incumbent party. Wave elections look like 1994, and even that wave (R+54 in the House, R+8 in the senate, massive change in control of state offices) was blunted by a popular president. 1994 was even more than the 54 because a number of dems jumped party after and Foley became the first Speaker to lose his seat in an election in well over a century. The last time it happened was in the lead up to the Civil War.

Even though 2010 was a bigger shift to red it wasn't as much of a red wave as '94 because that one came out of nowhere. You don't see post-election defection like '94, ever. Before the results started coming in the media thought it would be a slight shift, but close.

Ilhan Omar won in Minnesota with 78% so I get to hear 2 years of her rambling about endless refugee apologia. And Ellison won AG after a close race against Wardlow, but don't expect salt from the metoo crowd because allegations of rape should only be believed when we already decided we don't like the candidate. I can't really be surprised, I'm just glad the house doesn't have enough of a majority to do more than spin its wheels until Trump gets reelected.

One thing I kept hearing repeated last night was that this was a "realignment election". Uh, no. 1994 was. This was your typical (and somewhat weak) mid-term shuffle. In terms of anti-incumbent sentiment it was pretty meh.

If you told Dems it would end this way pre-kavanaugh they would be crushed. This election was supposed to be a slam dunk. Trump was supposed to drive voters into their loving embrace in droves. But they've had a month of polling data to study and they lowered their expectations. We missed out on some salt, boys. We missed out.

I don't get it, doesn't Beyonce's endorsement count as 50 trillion votes? Beyonce guys. She's like really on top of politics you guys.

OK, so now are the death camps going to open? I've been quite patient but jesus man we were promised those death camps back in 2016!

We still have some salt. The Stacey Abrams tantrum in Georgia backed by the Atlanta Journal Constipation is hilarious. They think there is going to be a “ runoff”. She’s 100,000 votes in the hole. There are 9000 absentee ballots. She is a ful % point behind. She can’t reach the threshold for recount or runoff, and her opponent is the Sec State Who certifies the election and declares it over.

Yep. The Today programme was making out that this was some sort of crippling blow for the Donald and Nick Robinson was getting very excited about how they can demand his tax returns and force the Russia probe and all that.

Just as I was heading out the door I heard

Presenter (not John Humpries or one of the birds): And we've just heard that the Democrates have taken Nevada, which is excellent news [extremely long uncomfortable pause while his producer gave him daggers]...for the Democrates.

I was pleasantly surprised she lost. The salt is bonus material.

I expected more salt from Gillum, but I misjudged him. He may be a commie, but he's mature for a young, midsized city commie mayor. His concession speech was a good one.

I gotta agree with HK on this one. I would've loved for the pubs to take both, but hey, you can't have it all. I'm looking forward to anyone on the Left that awkwardly tries to play this off as a major Democrat victory though. I already had a hell of a time watching the hours and hours long Killstream last night on and off.

Literally a guy saying this is no longer a blue wave, but a blue WAR, and people droning on about how half of America is fighting tooth and nail to hold onto hate just because the right won't suck the left's dick.
