Voting in the US midterm elections is now underway.

UpdatedUpdated 27 September
By Rashida Yosufzai, Nick Baker
In this article...
Americans have started to cast their ballots in a vote that could shape the rest of Donald Trump's presidency.

Although the US midterm elections are technically held on 6 November, early voting has already started in a handful of states.

Minnesota was the first state to allow early in-person voting on 21 September, with a handful of key states following, including New Jersey, California and Arizona.

Thirty-five states and the District of Columbia offer some form of early voting, meaning every day until 6 November counts for Democrats and Republicans.

It's been an inauspicious beginning to the voting season for Mr Trump and his Republican Party, which continue to struggle under the weight of near-constant self-imposed crises and chaos.

80 per cent chance of winning back the chamber.

Republicans have a 1 in 5 chance of keeping control of the House, while Democrats have about a 4 in 5 chance of winning control of the House. https://t.co/lyNh30TEIw pic.twitter.com/O38qtMPpIz

The Senate though is likely to be retained by the Republicans.

According to CNN, the Democrats are defending some two dozen seats, including 10 in states where Mr Trump secured victory in 2016, and five of those where he won resoundingly.

FiveThirtyEight gives the Democrats just a 30 per cent chance of taking the Senate.

Trump's election one year on: What do Americans think of him now?[/paste:font]

The Democrats could also use their numbers to set up House select committees targeting the president.

"They will have an opportunity to set up special panels and committees to essentially smear President Trump," United States Studies Centre research fellow Dougal Robinson told SBS News in April.

Mr Robinson pointed to the Benghazi committee set up by the Republicans against Hillary Clinton in 2014 to further investigate the fatal 2012 terrorist attack on two US government facilities in Libya.

Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Once seen as cruising to an easy vote - fulfilling Mr Trump's key promise to stack the Supreme Court with conservative justices - a string of sexual assault allegations has turned the Kavanaugh decision into all-out political war.

According to CNN's national political reporter Eric Bradner, the scandal and lukewarm response from some Republicans to Mr Kavanaugh's accusers could "drive suburban women away in midterms".

I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 21, 2018
Analysts also point to Robert Mueller's investigation as an ongoing potential source of political curveballs.

Mr Mueller has already indicted more than 30 people in connection with his probe into whether members of Mr Trump's campaign colluded with Russia to help get the real estate tycoon elected.

And speculation has swirled in recent days that Mr Trump may fire embattled deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein - who oversees the Russia collusion probe.

Doubts over how long Mr Rosenstein can keep the job have swirled since shock media reports that he once suggested secretly recording Mr Trump to collect evidence for ousting him under a constitutional amendment for presidents unfit to remain in office.

Mr Rosenstein's firing - and Mr Trump possibly putting someone more pliable in his place - would set off alarm bells over the future independence of a probe, which has the potential to rock both the midterms and the entire Trump presidency.

US wants ‘partnership, not domination’ in Australia and region[/paste:font]

A report co-authored by Mr Robinson predicted after the midterms, Congress would be highly unlikely to support a US re-entry to the Trans-Pacific Partnership - a trade deal between 11 Pacific nations including Australia and New Zealand which Mr Trump pulled the US out of last year.

Another issue that may affect Australia is that if the Democrats retake the House, it is likely to lead to lower defence spending.

How will Trump keep his voter base energized? "More Winning."

TRUMP HAS A TWO WORD RESPONSE WHEN REPORTER ASKS HIM HOW HE WILL KEEP GOP BASE ENERGIZED
5:52 PM 10/10/2018
Benny Johnson | Reporter At Large

President Donald Trump made portions of the White House press corps chuckle with his response on how he intends to keep Republican voters fired up after the ultimately successful confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

“How do you keep your base energized now that you have this Kavanaugh victory?” one reporter asked. Tuesday was the first day that Kavanaugh sat on the court after a contentious battle over his nomination.

“More winning,” Trump said.

Trump was leaving the White House on his way to a campaign rally Tuesday night when he took questions from reporters in the White House driveway.

The president was also asked about the mobs of paid progressive protesters that took over Capitol Hill during the contentious debate over Kavanaugh’s confirmation. Trump was specifically asked about the intense “energy” of the protesters.

“A lot of those were paid protesters. You saw that they are all unhappy because they haven’t been paid yet,” Trump alleged about the protesters. (RELATED: Trump Has A Theory Why The Anti-Kavanaugh Protesters Are So Mad)

Trump brought up his new trade deal with Canada and Mexico as a major policy win. “Our deal with Mexico and Canada was fantastic,” Trump said. “China wants to make a deal so badly. We will see where it goes. But I don’t think they are ready.”

MATT DRUDGE WARNS OF MIDTERM BLOODBATH: TRUMP TO LOSE ’60 SEATS IN THE HOUSE LIKE OBAMA DID’
2:41 PM 09/14/2018
Peter Hasson | Reporter

Conservative news giant Matt Drudge on Friday made a somber prediction about Republicans’ chances in the November midterm elections, predicting President Donald Trump will see his party lose 60 seats in the House of Representatives.

Drudge, who runs the influential Drudge Report, compared the upcoming midterms to the electoral bloodbath Democrats suffered in the 2010 midterm elections under former President Barack Obama.

“Trump and Obama both have 47% approval at this time of presidency, according to Rasmussen. Trump will also lose 60 seats in the House like Obama did during first midterm!” Drudge wrote on Twitter. (RELATED: Democrats Should Immediately Abolish ICE After Retaking Congress)

He added cryptically: “Unless…”

Democrats have to gain 23 House seats in November in order to flip the lower chamber. Democrats have an 83 percent chance of retaking the House, according to FiveThirty Eight.

Mark Taylor (The Trump Prophecies): Most Important Midterm Elections In All Of US History
July 30, 2018 29 3159

Mark Taylor says the upcoming 2018 elections are the most important mid-term elections in all of America’s history. Here’s why…

Mark Taylor interviewed by Greg Hunter on USA Watchdog

Mark Taylor, author of the popular book “The Trump Prophecies,” contends, “If you are part of the army of God, you need to be ready also because there are going to be politicians that are going to resign. We have had the biggest number of resignations probably in history. This midterm election is going to be huge. This is going to be a red tsunami. They keep talking about the blue wave. I think it’s going to be a blue drip, a leaky faucet, and that is all they are going to get. You have had more resignations than we have ever seen. Now is the time to go in and capture this ground and hold it for the Kingdom of God. . . . It’s not a left or right thing. God is moving us towards a place of righteousness. That’s what’s happening right now. So, he’s going to be replacing these people. If you are called to be a judge, senator, congressman or a council person, I don’t care what level local, state or federal, take your place and get ready. If you are in the Army of God and you don’t vote, you need to get off your behind and register to vote. These are going to be the most important midterm elections in America’s history—period.”

In closing, Taylor says, “I don’t think there is going to be another Democrat in the White House for a long time, if ever again. I believe you are seeing the death of the Democrat party right now.”

Join Greg Hunter as he goes One-on-One with Mark Taylor, co-author of “The Trump Prophecies,” which has been made into a movie that is releasing in early October.

I'm getting a laugh out of the Real Clear Politics house generic ballot average right now because despite all the back and forth, fail bombs, and shooting they've stayed pretty much even and now both sides are even reverting back to toss-ups.

Get out the vote campaigns are dumb. If you don't care enough to learn about this shit on your own, then you shouldn't be voting. Someone should start a "Please stay home" campaign for the next election cycle.
It doesn't help when you have low information voters who are just there to vote for one or two people, and don't care about all the other stuff. That's how you get B.S. judges retained on courts forever, and people who only win in nonpartisan races just because their name is first alphabetically.

I don't vote on that shit just because it's on the ballot if I know nothing about the people involved and neither should anyone else.

What is it that Dems have against anonymity?

Eh, I'd probably vote if I made a habit of at an age where I had literally nothing better to do.

Considering how quick it is to vote you really have no excuse. That being said an 18 year old who votes for the first time is more likely to keep doing so than someone who doesn't. As in that two minute process becomes strangely psychologically habit forming.

What is it that Dems have against anonymity?

Have you SEEN some of their supporters?

I've always wondered this : Doesn't it bother Americans that their votes aren't actually secret? I've just always wondered how that can be, because it just seems rife for corruption.

It doesn't actually show who people voted for. It shows what party you're registered with (if your state requires that info). Voting data is anonymous everywhere (I'm pretty sure of that).

In my state you show up at the polling station, tell them your name, they check to make sure you're registered on a printout, they hand you a card which you stick into the voting machine and you make your choices. The cards you insert in the machine are not tied to you in any way and they hand it to someone else to go vote after you turn it back in.

This app seems like a method to get idiots to give up their privacy/contacts and who knows what nefarious purposes the dataset will end up being used for.

You don't have to register party affiliation to vote I think, but in some states you must register affiliation to a party in order to vote in that party's internal election, like choosing their presidental candidate, right?

Right. You can register as an independent and vote in general elections but a lot of states won't let you vote in a primary election that chooses a party's candidate. Basically, only Republicans can vote in Republican elections and only Democrats can vote in Democrat elections. Some states let anyone vote in anyone's election though, it just depends.

What Soros backed org is putting up End the Patriarchy signs up, or did the retards at the nearby liberal arts college think that one up on their own? I was visiting the southern part of the state when I saw this confusing sign among typical ones for candidates. It read "He said > She said" and then in real tiny letter underneath "End the Patriarchy". If I hadn't known the word patriarchy from years of shitposting, I doubt I would have even been able to read it before driving completely by. The signs are all black with white lettering and the small print is a bit difficult to read, plus the larger slogan is confusing as hell. What moron thought this up?

I've also noticed way more signs that aren't either for or against a prop number, or supporting a candidate. Some calling for a candidate to step down, others shittalking the sign they're placed next to. I don't recall ever seeing that before, or at least they were a singular instance like a homemade one on someone's front lawn and not professional ones lining the streets.

Yeah in MA since I'm registered as unaffiliated I can vote in either primary, but not both. That's how I voted for Barry Obama over Hilldawg! Actually I usually vote in the dem primary, but not always.

Synosis of the US mid-term latest from BBC.

The US mid-term elections in five days' time will help define the rest of Donald Trump's presidency.

Americans will vote for members of both chambers of Congress, as well as for governors in 36 out of 50 states.

Between now and then, we'll bring you updates and all the best analysis every weekday in this round-up.

Today's edition includes a controversial ad and the #Blexit movement explained.

One controversial ad
With less than a week before the vote, President Trump has posted a divisive campaign ad on his Twitter account.

The video, now pinned to the top of his social media feed, blames the Democrats for "letting in" Luis Bracamontes - an undocumented immigrant from Mexico who killed two police officers in Sacramento in 2014.

Bracamontes, who had previously been deported twice, was sentenced to death for the murders earlier this year.

The video posted by President Trump shows Bracamontes grinning in court and threatening to "kill more cops soon".

"Illegal immigrant, Luis Bracamontes, killed our people! Democrats let him into our country. Democrats let him stay," the video captions read.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez told CNN that the ad showed "distracting, divisive Donald at his worst" and accused the president of "fearmongering" with the ad.

In comments beneath the video, Twitter users pointed out that white American citizens had been responsible for a number of mass shootings, including the recent attack on a synagogue on Saturday that left 11 Jewish worshippers dead.

President Trump has doubled-down on his notoriously strong rhetoric on immigration in recent weeks as the mid-terms near.

On Wednesday, he told reporters that as many as 15,000 troops could be deployed to the border with Mexico as a caravan of Central American migrants makes its way toward the US.

He has also clashed with his House Speaker Paul Ryan over a plan to revoke automatic citizenship rights for children born in the US using an executive order.

After Mr Ryan criticised the plan, President Trump vented on Twitter that he should be "focusing on holding the [Republican] Majority" instead.

One voter surge
Voting monitors are saying that early voting turnout already looks up across the board for the mid-terms - with particular surges noted among young people and non-white voters.

Data company TargetSmart says that over 1.5 million under-30s have already cast their ballot early - compared with only 563,000 in the same time period four years ago.

Battleground states currently held by Republicans, including Georgia and Texas, have shown particularly high early increases in young and African-American voters.

The data echoes polling that suggests next week's vote could see historic turnouts among the under-30s. In 2014, only 19.9% of them voted - the lowest amount recorded by monitoring groups for 40 years.

Both parties have touted the significance of the upcoming vote and National Voter Registration Day in September saw a record 800,000 registrations.

Young activist groups, including the students from Parkland who organised March for Our Lives, have been particularly vocal about rallying and registering first-time voters.

They went on a Summer bus tour through the US to encourage young people to register and recently had celebrities, including Marvel film stars, talk about their "first time" voting in a campaign video.

One piece to read
Many states, the majority of them governed by Republicans, have put in place new legislation in recent years saying they are needed to prevent rampant voter fraud.

Opponents believe this is strategic, and disproportionately targets specific groups, including minorities, to prevent them from voting.

We've taken a look at all the different claims of voter suppression across the country.

The BBC's Rajini Vaidyanathan and Anthony Zurcher explain the "Blexit", or "Black Exit", movement that is encouraging black Americans to vote Republican.

The campaign made headlines earlier this week when rapper Kanye West was linked to it - before he promptly announced his departure from politics.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump's campaign claimed in an ad that Democrats are responsible for a Mexican citizen who killed two California deputies, and Trump's critics have called the spot racist and divisive.

"Illegal immigrant, Luis Bracamontes, killed our people!" reads the opening text in a campaign ad tweeted by Trump Wednesday.

"Democrats let him stay," the next line reads.

The man featured in the video is Luis Bracamontes, a Mexican citizen who had repeatedly entered the U.S. illegally and was sentenced to death for the murder of two Sacramento County sheriff's deputies.

The inflammatory ad is part of Trump's ongoing push to make immigration a key issue ahead of the midterm elections next week.

"It is outrageous what the Democrats are doing to our Country. Vote Republican now!" the president tweeted alongside the ad.

The 53-second spot, paid for by the Trump campaign, is being derided by many as the most racially charged campaign commercial since the infamous 1988 "Willie Horton ad."

"This is distracting, divisive Donald at his worst," Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez told CNN. Perez characterized the commercial as "dog whistle politics" based on "fear-mongering" and a desperate move ahead of the midterm election. Pollsters have predicted the Democrats will gain a majority in the House of Representatives.

More: Donald Trump launches campaign tour by pounding immigration debate

During his trial, Bracamontes was removed from the courtroom for threatening outbursts. At the reading of his verdict in February, Bracamontes smiled and vowed to "to kill more cops soon." The commercial centers on Bracamontes' antics, while the text tells the viewer that "Democrats let him stay."

Hello! We’ve got complete midterm election coverage right here. Let’s begin!
election-chatbot-logo.png

The video, which had been seen by 1.9 million people as of 7 a.m. EDT Thursday, then cuts to scenes of apparent migrants crashing through unspecified gates.

"Who else would Democrats let in?" the ad asks rhetorically in conclusion, before closing with a message that "President Donald J. Trump and Republicans are making America safe again."

Immigration has long been a top issue for Trump since he entered politics, but in recent weeks, he has stepped up the tempo in his warning cries about an "invasion" across the U.S.-Mexico border.

He has used his platform to help keep up step-by-step media coverage of a caravan of Central American migrants traveling north through Mexico. On Wednesday, the president threatened to deploy 15,000 U.S. troops to the border in response to the approaching caravan, which is made up of people fleeing corruption, violence and poverty in their home countries.

Also this week, Trump began to argue he can end birthright citizenship, which most legal scholars believe is enshrined in the 14th Amendment, with an executive order.

It is not the first 2018 midterm campaign commercial paid for by Trump's 2020 presidential campaign. Another ad that says a Democratic victory would endanger the country's economic gains, but never mentions Trump, began airing Monday as part of a $6 million ad buy.

"You have to make people feel things. I think that's what commercials are, from a commercial for a car, a phone or anything that might be," Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale told CNN about the "We Can't Go Back" ad.

In response to the new ad featuring Bracamontes, Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake, a Trump critic, said, "This is just a new low in campaigning. It's sickening," according to CNN's Jake Tapper.

Several critics compared the ad to a conservative PAC commercial for former President George H.W. Bush's successful 1988 campaign to succeed President Ronald Reagan. The ad centered on William Horton, a convicted murderer who fled custody after being released as part of a weekend furlough program supported by Bush's Democratic opponent, former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis. Horton committed a violent rape while out of prison.

The ad is often referred to as a negative example of capitalizing on racial anxieties for political gain. Princeton University history professor Kevin Kruse argued that Trump's ad is actually "so much worse" because, "Unlike the Willie Horton ad – which was outsourced to third parties" this "new ad is coming directly from the personal Twitter account of the president himself."

"And it isn't just that the president of the United States is personally pushing white nationalist politics in its ugliest and crudest form, it's that he's doing it proudly and with purpose," Kruse tweeted.

Thirty years ago, George H.W. Bush released his infamous fear-mongering, racist ad on Willie Horton.

This Trump ad is worse. Far worse.

We are in an era in which one side is trying to commodify and professionalize meme warfare while failing amazingly to realise memes must be short sweet and relatively organic to work. "The left can't meme" is itself a meme because some idiot is trying to control a message and get a point across. This extends into shit like the posters we are seeing all around.
