Voting in the US midterm elections is now underway.

UpdatedUpdated 27 September

In this article...
Americans have started to cast their ballots in a vote that could shape the rest of Donald Trump's presidency.

Although the US midterm elections are technically held on 6 November, early voting has already started in a handful of states.

Minnesota was the first state to allow early in-person voting on 21 September, with a handful of key states following, including New Jersey, California and Arizona.

Thirty-five states and the District of Columbia offer some form of early voting, meaning every day until 6 November counts for Democrats and Republicans.

It's been an inauspicious beginning to the voting season for Mr Trump and his Republican Party, which continue to struggle under the weight of near-constant self-imposed crises and chaos.

80 per cent chance of winning back the chamber.

The Senate though is likely to be retained by the Republicans.

According to CNN, the Democrats are defending some two dozen seats, including 10 in states where Mr Trump secured victory in 2016, and five of those where he won resoundingly.

FiveThirtyEight gives the Democrats just a 30 per cent chance of taking the Senate.

The Democrats could also use their numbers to set up House select committees targeting the president.

"They will have an opportunity to set up special panels and committees to essentially smear President Trump," United States Studies Centre research fellow Dougal Robinson told SBS News in April.

Mr Robinson pointed to the Benghazi committee set up by the Republicans against Hillary Clinton in 2014 to further investigate the fatal 2012 terrorist attack on two US government facilities in Libya.

Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Once seen as cruising to an easy vote - fulfilling Mr Trump's key promise to stack the Supreme Court with conservative justices - a string of sexual assault allegations has turned the Kavanaugh decision into all-out political war.

According to CNN's national political reporter Eric Bradner, the scandal and lukewarm response from some Republicans to Mr Kavanaugh's accusers could "drive suburban women away in midterms".

I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 21, 2018
Analysts also point to Robert Mueller's investigation as an ongoing potential source of political curveballs.

Mr Mueller has already indicted more than 30 people in connection with his probe into whether members of Mr Trump's campaign colluded with Russia to help get the real estate tycoon elected.

And speculation has swirled in recent days that Mr Trump may fire embattled deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein - who oversees the Russia collusion probe.

Doubts over how long Mr Rosenstein can keep the job have swirled since shock media reports that he once suggested secretly recording Mr Trump to collect evidence for ousting him under a constitutional amendment for presidents unfit to remain in office.

Mr Rosenstein's firing - and Mr Trump possibly putting someone more pliable in his place - would set off alarm bells over the future independence of a probe, which has the potential to rock both the midterms and the entire Trump presidency.

US wants ‘partnership, not domination’ in Australia and region[/paste:font]

A report co-authored by Mr Robinson predicted after the midterms, Congress would be highly unlikely to support a US re-entry to the Trans-Pacific Partnership - a trade deal between 11 Pacific nations including Australia and New Zealand which Mr Trump pulled the US out of last year.

Another issue that may affect Australia is that if the Democrats retake the House, it is likely to lead to lower defence spending.

How will Trump keep his voter base energized? "More Winning."

TRUMP HAS A TWO WORD RESPONSE WHEN REPORTER ASKS HIM HOW HE WILL KEEP GOP BASE ENERGIZED
5:52 PM 10/10/2018
Benny Johnson | Reporter At Large

President Donald Trump made portions of the White House press corps chuckle with his response on how he intends to keep Republican voters fired up after the ultimately successful confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

“How do you keep your base energized now that you have this Kavanaugh victory?” one reporter asked. Tuesday was the first day that Kavanaugh sat on the court after a contentious battle over his nomination.

“More winning,” Trump said.

Trump was leaving the White House on his way to a campaign rally Tuesday night when he took questions from reporters in the White House driveway.

The president was also asked about the mobs of paid progressive protesters that took over Capitol Hill during the contentious debate over Kavanaugh’s confirmation. Trump was specifically asked about the intense “energy” of the protesters.

“A lot of those were paid protesters. You saw that they are all unhappy because they haven’t been paid yet,” Trump alleged about the protesters. (RELATED: Trump Has A Theory Why The Anti-Kavanaugh Protesters Are So Mad)

Trump brought up his new trade deal with Canada and Mexico as a major policy win. “Our deal with Mexico and Canada was fantastic,” Trump said. “China wants to make a deal so badly. We will see where it goes. But I don’t think they are ready.”

MATT DRUDGE WARNS OF MIDTERM BLOODBATH: TRUMP TO LOSE ’60 SEATS IN THE HOUSE LIKE OBAMA DID’
2:41 PM 09/14/2018
Peter Hasson | Reporter

Conservative news giant Matt Drudge on Friday made a somber prediction about Republicans’ chances in the November midterm elections, predicting President Donald Trump will see his party lose 60 seats in the House of Representatives.

Drudge, who runs the influential Drudge Report, compared the upcoming midterms to the electoral bloodbath Democrats suffered in the 2010 midterm elections under former President Barack Obama.

“Trump and Obama both have 47% approval at this time of presidency, according to Rasmussen. Trump will also lose 60 seats in the House like Obama did during first midterm!” Drudge wrote on Twitter. (RELATED: Democrats Should Immediately Abolish ICE After Retaking Congress)

He added cryptically: “Unless…”

Democrats have to gain 23 House seats in November in order to flip the lower chamber. Democrats have an 83 percent chance of retaking the House, according to FiveThirty Eight.

Mark Taylor (The Trump Prophecies): Most Important Midterm Elections In All Of US History
July 30, 2018 29 3159

Mark Taylor says the upcoming 2018 elections are the most important mid-term elections in all of America’s history. Here’s why…

Mark Taylor interviewed by Greg Hunter on USA Watchdog

Mark Taylor, author of the popular book “The Trump Prophecies,” contends, “If you are part of the army of God, you need to be ready also because there are going to be politicians that are going to resign. We have had the biggest number of resignations probably in history. This midterm election is going to be huge. This is going to be a red tsunami. They keep talking about the blue wave. I think it’s going to be a blue drip, a leaky faucet, and that is all they are going to get. You have had more resignations than we have ever seen. Now is the time to go in and capture this ground and hold it for the Kingdom of God. . . . It’s not a left or right thing. God is moving us towards a place of righteousness. That’s what’s happening right now. So, he’s going to be replacing these people. If you are called to be a judge, senator, congressman or a council person, I don’t care what level local, state or federal, take your place and get ready. If you are in the Army of God and you don’t vote, you need to get off your behind and register to vote. These are going to be the most important midterm elections in America’s history—period.”

In closing, Taylor says, “I don’t think there is going to be another Democrat in the White House for a long time, if ever again. I believe you are seeing the death of the Democrat party right now.”

Join Greg Hunter as he goes One-on-One with Mark Taylor, co-author of “The Trump Prophecies,” which has been made into a movie that is releasing in early October.

yeah, to be fair, it's unlikely that the majority of them will even vote, but overall it's going to favor democrats. one of their reasons for the measure was that 'felons are disproportionately black and latino and that's mean and racist,' and those demographics tend to vote democrat. blacks go 90-95% dem, latinos go 60-70% dem.

it may not be the end of the world but it certainly doesn't help trump 2020.

In all honesty many states allow felons to vote. I'm not a big fan of the idea because it softens the whole impact of what a big deal it is to be a convicted felon. I think incremental steps like that will eventually lead to attempting to bar employers from checking criminal records. I think "former felon" is a moronic term, it's like saying "former sex offender". You did something to earn the legal status, so unless you have it expunged, a felon you remain.

But I digress. It happens in many other states already, and while its dems who celebrate these pushes, most felons aren't exactly civic minded, and aren't likely to vote. Doesn't mean the democrats don't bus them all to the polls, but I imagine there was plenty of illegitimate voting going on anyway in the rich and vibrant inner city polls.

Additionally, while the prisons have a huge population of minorities, there are plenty of whites in them too, and many of them are inclined to vote against democrats for, uh, often racially charged reasons. The prisons tend to be very polarizing places nowadays among racial lines, and often those biases persist after release.

On the plus side, one state, NC, passed a voter ID amendment to their constitution. Look forward to some legal challenges by democrat groups suggesting that it's illegal to require voters to provide the same ID they do for literally everything else in their lives to vote.

In all honesty many states allow felons to vote.
they make it something you have to jump through hoops and red tape for, though, so most don't bother.

this is different because it 'automatically restores the right to vote.' if that does what it says on the box, then these people don't have to do anything special and can simply go vote like anybody else:

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, can someone better at American politics explain how the party with 10 million more votes still lost? Is it the same rules that technically cucked Hillary Clinton out of a win? I’m not upset or anything I just want to learn.
We're not a parliamentary republic. We vote for individuals, not parties, despite how entrenched said two parties are. If one candidate wins huge in one state it's completely irrelevant to his opponents narrow in in another district.

You ask for the impossible. The majority of politicians (and just about anyone in a position of power) suck the dicks of their investors and do whatever the investors/big businesses who pay most says as long as they serve as a good source of income for their party. ".

Ironically, people who are already rich, like Trump, are the only ones who can make legit claims to populism, based only on the fact that he can't be bought, because he's so rich, nobody could afford him....... he's the only politician who doesn't need to sell out to get votes, he can just cut out the middle man an buy them directly - "I'm gonna deregulate the shit out of everything and we ALL get rich, who's with me?" And he has an ego that won't tollerate being "owned".

None of this - "We're gonna make the big corporations pay, except X, Y, Z and P who donated a lot to me, and we can't make A, B, C, D, E, F, or G pay, since they're owned by X, Y and Z, so... okay, so that means, uh, company W's taxes are going up by 10% and we'll call that progress "

For years they said you couldn't vote for a rich megalomaniac, they'd screw you over, and it turns out they realize they can make far more money (and therefore , social power) upfront and legitly by being openly mercenary than any backroom deal for support could get them..... it's kinda amazing.

Only Nixon could go to China, only Trump could say "Yeah, I'm cutting taxes, because people like having money, trust me"

My position here is:
Trump bad. America Dumb. Europe Dumb. Everyone's dumb and wrong, and we need new blood and new ideas in order to fix things. That and politicians who aren't sucking the dick of Saudi Arabia for the petrodollar.
Hey, at least you're consistent. It's a rather pessimistic mindset though. That doesn't mean you're wrong...

Global warming will be expanding the Sahara and other deserts and climate refugees will scramble across the now heavily militarised Med, which is all but unnavigable thanks to Italian and Spanish mines....

Canada is doing really well for itself. Global warming is actually being of a net benefit to it as the tundra becomes increasingly fertile. Ditto Norway. Sweden, however, collapsed as its policy of uncontrolled climate- and war-refugee welcoming led to waves of violence rebounding around the place. ...
Right, that's my autism over for today.

Heh well I wouldn't bank too much on all that global warming related change, seeing as how the globe hasn't warmed in the last 20 years. I bet by then we'll have an all new crisis, maybe that one will even be real! Hell all the anti global warming stuff can be re purposed to fight smog, a real actual thing that exists and causes problems.

the globe hasn't warmed in the last 20 years.

Climate varies over much longer timescales than 20 years. Try 100 years. There are also many other factors which mean that any global warming won't be a nice near progression, but in fits and starts. However I am not a climatologist.

Suffice to say, though, global warming is real, and this is why we need to go nuclear in a serious way.

On the Governor side the GOP have lost New Mexico, Michigan, Maine, Illinois and of all places Kansas.

Michigan isn't too surprising. As decent as Governor Snyder may have been, the Flint Water situation loomed large over his head for the past several years. I believe that played a big role in yesterday's election results.

Governor-Elect Whitmer likely got the LGBTetc vote with her desire to add gender identity to Michigan's civil rights law. Ditto for Attorney General-Elect Dana Nessel who is already known for her role in the SCOTUS Gay Marriage Case and has already expressed a desire to form some sort of hate crime commission once she's AG. Let's just hope this doesn't lead to stuff similar to the Colorado bakery controversy or people with countless genders seeking legal recourse because someone forgot to use the correct pronouns that randomly change without notice every few minutes. *sigh*

However, the fact that Republicans held onto a slim majority in both Michigan's House and Senate means that Whitmer will have to make good on her boasts of bipartisanship to get stuff passed for now. We'll see how that works out.

If SJW judge people by their gender and heritage, doesn‘t THAT make them racist and sexist?

Case in point: Michigan Dems are up in arms that a bigger deal isn't being made about Garlin Gilchrist II being the state's first African-American Lieutenant Governor. Maybe it's because:
  • Most people don't care about the skin color of whomever holds that position, and
  • SJWs that call out racism so often only to turn around and brag about race is something that's starting to grow tiresome to the average person that simply wants to have a comfortable daily life.
Yesterday, I mentioned that I'd be surprised if our precinct topped 50% turnout. I have to (gladly) eat my words; voting city-wide topped that easily with my precinct alone having a 63% turnout. I believe this was more than the presidential election turnout two years ago, though I wonder if those voting for or against the legalization of recreational marijuana helped bolster yesterday's turnout.

(Edit to Add) I'm not surprised the Blue Wave never really materialized on the Federal level. Once again the hype was the bigger deal compared to the end result. Regardless, the salt and TDS should still continue to flow.

Nancy Polosi overplaying winning the house as some sort of revolutionary act.
:story:
Who's she kidding?
At most she's just going to be an annoyance to Trump, unless she can dig actual dirt on him (which she won't)
Even if by some unholy miracle she did find something, good odds Trump could spin it in his favor while making the left chimp even harder.

Do we have any Democrat posters? Explain to me what Liberals thought was going to happen.

If I were a Dem I would be very pleased with how the night went, especially after what appeared to be unanimous horror for a while with the Republican chances shooting up, but all I can see from Redditors and Twitterfags is doom and gloom. Like was the assumption 100% "We're getting both!" or something? Fuck, even Beto coming as close as he did I would think would generate some glee, a Democrat was 2 point away from getting Texas! Nope, shock and horror that he didn't win it in a landslide.

Because all the news they get is from liberal news sites that told them there was a blue tsunami that going to wash the bad orangeness away, they live in a twitter circlejerk that reinforced that message and most of them have lived shelter lives so they have no way to calibrate the results beyond complete and utter despair.

That, and they're so addicted to moral outrage now they go directly to it even when they should be kind of happy.
