I wondering if any of you have experience with UnionPay in the United States. They look at least a little interesting, but I have no idea how useful they are outside of China.

My goal is to see if there are options for me that are not US-based. I do not like the American companies.

I thought this thread was going to be asking how much unionized workers make so I would imagine they're pretty useless in the states. On the other hand only poors and criminals use money transfer services like this. You're not poor, are you?

I want to know more about other options.

Looking around, it seems that UnionPay works at all ATMs and most retailers. I do remember seeing their logo at a bunch of places.

UnionPay is literally just a Chinese credit card processor. It’s like Visa in that it’s only a network and works with various banks. You will need a Chinese bank account to get a UnionPay debit/credit card. There may be some other way to get one but it’s probably a pain in the ass and not worth it.

You might get better advice if you tell me what you’re looking for. Are you a business that wants to send/receive payments or just an individual that wants to avoid having a US based account?

Thanks for taking some interest and offering not-financial advice.

I am just a normal person with good credit. I have a Visa but I figure it might not be a terrible idea to have and develop a credit base with a company outside the current system. But I really don't know much about international transactions or the general pitfalls of using another provider.

I’d go with either American Express or Discover. While they are ‘in the system’ they are completely independent from Visa and Mastercard. Personally, I like American Express because their customer service is good and they process things fast. They are the bank themselves, so everything is handled by one company. I don’t have experience with Discover, but I’ve heard good things about them.

The FICO forums and FlyerTalk are good resources for credit cards in general.

Good resources, thank you for sharing.
