Today Trump ordered the Pentagon to establish the 6th U.S. military branch, the U.S. Space Force.

Speaking at a meeting of the National Space Council, Trump ordered the Pentagon to immediately establish a national “space force” that would become the sixth branch of the armed forces.

“We are going to have a space force,” Trump said in Washington D.C. “An Air Force and a Space Force. Separate, but equal.”

This is not the first time that Trump has floated the idea of establishing a “space force.” The president mentioned the idea in May during a ceremony at the White House honoring the Army Black Knights college football team.

Trump did not go into details about what military role the so-called “space force” would carry out or who would command it, but he framed space as a national security issue, saying he does not want "China and Russia and other countries leading us."

The president said the United States will "be the leader by far" in space and is looking to revive the nation's flagging space program by returning the United States to the moon and soon reaching Mars.

The U.S. Space Force has unveiled its logo and motto.

In a statement released Wednesday, the military announced that its motto is “semper supra,” or “always above.”

“‘Semper Supra’ (Always Above) is our official motto and it represents our role in establishing, maintaining and preserving U.S. freedom of operations in the space domain,” tweeted Space Force.

“The logo and motto honor the heritage and history of the U.S. Space Force,” the service branch said in the statement. The silver outer border of the Delta symbol signifies defense and protection from all adversaries and threats from the space domain, according to Space Force. "In the center of the Delta is the star Polaris," it adds, "which symbolizes how the core values guide the Space Force mission."

“The delta was first used in space organizations as early as 1961 and has inspired generations of space professionals,” tweeted Space Force.

Space News notes that a delta design is also used on Space Force’s seal and flag.

The sixth branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, the creation of Space Force was announced in August 2018.

On March 26, 2020, Space Force made its first launch when the U.S. military's Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF-6) satellite lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The satellite blasted into the Florida sky atop a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V 551 rocket.

Can’t wait for them to release the Captain yellow uniforms. Seriously though don’t let Star Trek fans near this again.

Bah, Security Red so the enemy can't see you bleed where its at.

They should have instead of "always above" picked "above all"

Guardians make sense in terms of the messaging. Space Marine would be too verbose and suggests that the policy of the Space Force is for offense. Guardian suggests a defense; protecting American space.

It's too passive, and guardians against what? Russian anti-satellite missiles?
This should be a straight up space navy.

Pretty much against Russian and Chinese military adventures in space as well as protecting U.S. cybersecurity interests. But what other names would make sense? Rangers has already been taken by the army. Defense Force sounds too terrestrial and has already been used by other states like the IDF and JSDF. And at the end of the day something like Space Marines, Colonial Marines, or Mobile Infantry would require some sort of a more "army" type soldiers and at this point USSF is more like the Air Force. Maybe if they make US Spaceships we can change the name, but giving a bunch of military nerds the title "Space Marine" may make it go to their heads.

Spacers is the scifi traditionalist term.

They chose guardians because it's not as ridiculous and sci fi as most other options. I say fuck that, go even harder in that direction. Void knights. Astral paladins. Solar templars. Acolytes of the galactic order. There's limitless options to choose from.

Space Force member skips Physical Training to get PS5; loses rank

A recent Space Force letter of reprimand is truly a sight to behold. According to the letter and an accompanying memorandum for record, a Space Force member was 30 minutes late for a fitness lesson because he was scouting out nearby Target stores for the new PlayStation 5 console.

When the Space Force member was reminded by his superior to get to the fitness lesson, he responded "Yolo, PS5 > letters of discipline."

Yolo, as the kids say, means “you only live once,” and it’s that kind of reckless attitude that gets one’s name written up in a letter of reprimand.

"You were late to work and insinuated to your supervisor that buying a PlayStation was more important to you than the disciplinary consequences of your actions," reads the letter, which was shared on the popular Air Force amn/nco/snco Facebook page Tuesday. "Your actions are an extreme deviation from the professionalism expected of you as a member of the armed forces."

As a result, the Space Force member was knocked down a rank from senior airman to airman 1st class on Tuesday, according to the letter. It might have been a worthwhile trade-off to get a highly sought-after PlayStation 5, but the letter does not indicate whether his search was successful.

The letter has remarkable timing: It was posted just days after the Space Force trounced American and British military teams at a Call of Duty tournament. As the letter clearly demonstrates, Space Force members will put their careers on the line to maintain their gaming dominance. We can only hope they employ a similar ferocity in their fight for American interests in the final frontier. Semper Supra!
