Two men have been released on bail after allegedly throwing fists and swearing during an execution in Texas.
Billie Wayne Coble, 70, was put to death by lethal injection nearly 30 years after murdering his wife's parents and brother.
His son and grandson, Gordon Wayne and Dalton, allegedly became violent witnessing his death and were arrested after swearing and lashing out.
The pair were later released on bail of $1,000 (£755).
Gordon Wayne Coble's wife also allegedly caused a disturbance but was not charged.
Billie Wayne Coble is the oldest inmate executed in Texas since the state resumed capital punishment in 1982.
The Vietnam War veteran was convicted in 1989 of killing Robert and Zelda Vicha and their son Bobby.
Coble had previously kidnapped his then-wife, Karen Vicha, apparently distraught over their pending divorce.
He was released on bail before killing her family members nine days later.
At his execution, his son and grandson allegedly began swearing and kicking other people in the witness room, with Gordon Wayne allegedly pounding on the window of the chamber.
Officers intervened and took them outside where they were charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
Coble was once described by a prosecutor as having "a heart full of scorpions".

Swearing during an execution is an arrestable offence in Texas?

I could never understand the point of sentencing someone to death, and then keeping them around for decades. Fucker was seventy! He could have dropped from old age or shower room shenanigans. Why do these sentences take so long, sometimes?

  1. Appeals
  2. America wants the death penalty but is too squeamish to chop heads or drop hang
  3. Nobody wants to give America the drugs for lethal injections

Literally the last place my paranoid ass would ever commit a crime. I can just imagine the conversation the cops would have:

“Do we really have to spend time booking him? It’s five o’clock and I wanna go home.”

“...fine, strap him in.”

Weren't gas chambers a thing, once? Ditto, electric chairs? Also, can we really not manufacture our own deadly poison to kill people with? Janitor closets do exist, and they tend to be full of dangerous chemicals you're not supposed to insert into people anywhere. I admit a lack of general knowledge when it comes to methods of killing people, but isn't hanging pretty fucking quick, and clean? I mean, regardless of how you're gonna do it, there's still gonna be a dead body to clean up.

The whole thing with lethal injections is that they're supposed to be lethal but completely painless, and mixing together chemicals all willy nilly is not gonna be a painless injection. The electric chair's also being phased out in favor of lethal injections due to the fact that it's not the instant, brain-frying death people thought it was. It actually just fryed your organs up good and there were several reported cases of the victim surviving it multiple times before finally succumbing to the chair. Hanging, when done wrong, could fatally wound the victim and leave them in agony for about 45 minutes to an hour IIRC. Really it's just a case of "Well, this seems like a pretty humane way to kill someone" until science marches on and we find out that they're in the worst agony possible for an hour and only look dead. Then we find a new way to do it and the cycle begins again

Basically there has to be a perfect union of "Painless", "Cheap", and "leaves a presentable corpse" when it comes to executions. A lot of things are both Instant/Cheap* or Cheap/Leaves a presentable corpse** or instant/Leaves a presentable corpse*** but the golden trinity just isnt very easy to come by. Frankly I think the best thing to do is just dope them up on anasthetic and suffocate them in their sleep so they dont feel anything nor leave a mess.

Wasn't there a guy in Iowa or somewhere in the last few years who requested execution by firing squad? That's what I would want if I were a death row inmate. Rifle shot to the heart is an almost instant death. And a 7.62 round costs under a dollar.

It was Ronnie Lee Gardner of Utah. At least he owed up to what he did. "I lived by the gun. I murdered with a gun, so I will die by the gun."

Gas chambers needed to be serviced for reasons that should be obvious. The electric chair was controversial when it was introduced and had a chance of setting people on fire or just electrocuting them; either way, it's an waste of electricity. The firing squad causes PTSD for the executioners and it requires someone to be an good shot. But nowadays,, it's just 4 people who actually have an bullet and a fifth who has an blank, and none of them knows who has what. Lethal injection has the Hippocratic Oath and the public demanding for a painless execution getting in the way. And while hanging was an decent form of public entertainment and gave the local carpenters something to do by building the gallows, this is why we can't do fun shit anymore.

Yep, and there are a few states that still let you choose your method of execution. Utah has the firing squad. California and Arizona still technically have gas chambers, though executions have been put on hiatus. A handful of states still offer the electric chair as an option.

I would add kind of messy to the con list. I don't understand why hanging fell out if style. Especially the British method of hanging thats just as quick as the guillotine and way less messy.

What?
Who would miss the oppurtunity to have a cool funeral where everyone sees your body holding up it's own head?

Also lol at drop hangings being quick or painless. Back in the day IIRC the weight charts were knowingly bullshit and everyone lied on the official forms.
My grandad said he saw people jiggling about trying to die. "Died cleanly in 6 seconds" it said on the forms.
