Twitter/X has made (some of?) their code and algorithms open source. (Link/Archive)

Look into the code here.

Edit: the code has been downloaded from github and attached to this post for posterity.

This will have the unintended consequence of letting people game the algorithm to fuck, not only for LinkedIn-tier self promo posts but internet classics like penis enlargement scams as well as pajeet coupon redemption scams.

Therefore it'll never stick in the long run.

This was an early promise after the Twitter ackquisition, "We'll make the algorithm open source". Most users will not care, but maybe something interesting will come of it. Foreign governments and to a lesser extent Congress may have urged it along. Easier to make something available now than comply with some dumb law later.

Not much to say other than I applaud when things go open source.
Look foward to the tinkering

This isn't going to provide any magic "win" buttons. It's mostly just detailing how it determines what content to show YOU. But it confirms the logic is mostly just mirroring user behavior back at them. The only real "gameable" insight it seems is the diversity decay, confirming that if you spam posts, the algorithm suppresses you to stop you from cluttering a feed. But again, that's common sense. Don't be annoying!

Other than that, it's exactly what you'd expect: Do you interact? Do you DM share their content? Did you follow immediately after seeing a post? Show the user more of this person's content! It's just a standard engagement farming loop.

Nothing burger.

If there's a documented way to escape ragebait and political posts, I may create a new X account. But I guess it's not possible.

They actually did make (some of?) it open source, they had an entire blog post (A) about it, with the relevant github repository(ies) provided, but from what I understand this algorithm became outdated pretty quickly post grok/xAI. There were even a bunch of slop accounts talking about the "secrets of the algorithm" for a while after it got posted, a la google SEO tutorial shit
Congress may have urged it along. Easier to make something available now than comply with some dumb law later.
Its 50/50 on them gaining/losing from open sourcing it, they're probably more concerned with being able to leverage the army of indians, volunteers willing to make improvements to their code (for free)

This is just arguing for security by obscurity. And it's doubly stupid with how much attention twitter gets because with that much traffic people will work out how to game it by sheer trial and error.

Further it not "stick[ing] in the long run" is something they seem to be taking into account as -even though I'm not sure I believe them- they've committed to release any updates every month.
