(Reuters) – Twitter will test sending users a prompt when they reply to a tweet using “offensive or hurtful language,” in an effort to clean up conversations on the social media platform, the company said in a tweet on Tuesday.

When users hit “send” on their reply, they will be told if the words in their tweet are similar to those in posts that have been reported and asked if they would like to revise it or not.

Twitter has long been under pressure to clean up hateful and abusive content on its platform, which is policed by users flagging rule-breaking tweets and by technology.

“We’re trying to encourage people to rethink their behavior and rethink their language before posting because they often are in the heat of the moment and they might say something they regret,” Sunita Saligram, Twitter’s global head of site policy for trust and safety, said in an interview with Reuters.

Twitter’s policies do not allow users to target individuals with slurs, racist or sexist tropes, or degrading content.

The company took action against almost 396,000 accounts under its abuse policies and more than 584,000 accounts under its hateful conduct policies between January and June of last year, according to its transparency report.

Asked whether the experiment would instead give users a playbook to find loopholes in Twitter’s rules on offensive language, Saligram said it was targeted at the majority of rule-breakers, who are not repeat offenders.

Twitter said the experiment, the first of its kind for the company, will start on Tuesday and last at least a few weeks. It will run globally but only for English-language tweets.

I've noticed leftists tend to swear more then rightests. Normally its a jumbled bunch of words with a swear, such as douchecanoe or twatwaffler or other nonsensical phrase.

Wonder how long this feature will be in effect until its pulled for "unfairly targeting lefty twitter"

No, they'll just get quietly whitelisted behind the scenes. Rules are for the plebs, after all.

WattPad already does this with profanity and other bullying language, and it's super gay when this message shows up:

But at least it doesn't hide the message from view.

I've noticed that bullshit too. They like to sound high and mighty while they have temper tantrum, "twatwaffler" sounds like a British insult so it would be read in a more elitist British accent, giving off a position of superiority.

Hello there citizen. I cant help but notice youre tweet is not within the normal approved speech guidelines. Would you like to change it before we send in the brown shirts?

Isn't "twatwaffler" also a redundant phrase? You're basically calling someone a "puss-puss".

Twitter is about 50% on the way to being a dead platform. Decreased revenue growth for 18 months. 18-34 demographic steadily decreasing. 10% of users create 40% of content. Speech eradication. Used to dox and harass by Far Left looney tunes.

Telegram and Gab are growing during the pandemic while Facebook and Twitter are stagnant. I have hope for future generations.

If Twitter wants to fix itself, they need to just fucking rush towards decentralizing like they've been talking about.

Only 40%? I'm surprised.

Most of Twitter seems to be insane addicts having slapfights with one another.

Someone did a survey of Twitter content and found that 10% of Twitter are "power users" that basically tweet all day long and 90% of twitter accounts barely access the site once a month. Over half of all tweets are botnet related pointers to other content. Which means that 10% or less of Twitter's activity is average user discourse or content.
