Twitter appears to be working on a subscription platform for its social networking service. A new job listingreveals that Twitter has a new internal team, codenamed “Gryphon,” that is “building a subscription platform.” Twitter is currently recruiting engineers to join this subscription team, with employees collaborating closely with the company’s payments team.

The job posting notes potential Twitter subscriptions would be “a first” for the company, but it’s not clear exactly how Twitter plans to implement a subscription service. Twitter generates the vast majority of its revenue through ad sales and data licensing currently, and a subscription service could potentially provide exclusive content in return for a monthly fee.

Twitter has previously investigated offering subscriptions as a paid service for power users. The company ran a survey a few years ago to assess whether Twitter users would pay for new analytics, breaking news alerts, or information about what an account’s followers are tweeting about.

Twitter may also be considering a Twitch- or Patreon-style type of subscription, where you could subscribe to individual accounts in some way. We’ve reached out to Twitter to comment on its subscription plans, and we’ll update you accordingly.

Following publication of this article, Twitter revised the job posting to remove mention of a potential subscription feature in development or the Gryphon team working on it. The listing now says the company is simply looking for an Android engineer to “work on a bevy of backend engineering teams to build components that allow for experimentation to deliver the best experience possible to all of our users.”

Imagine Twitter copying Something Awful's monetization system and allowing you to change the profile picture and name (the changeable part, not the @) of someone else's account. They'd make hundreds of thousands of dollars per day just from Trump's account.
>dangerhairs pay to make it say STUPID RACIST SEXIST XENOPHOBE
>frogposters pay to make it say GOD EMPEROR OF THE UNITED STATES
>this repeats back and forth millions of times every day
genius business model

Alright paypiggies, if you want to see me dismantled the bad orange man and smash racism, then time to pay up.

Imagine Twitter if it were an even worse echo chamber :lunacy:

But there are many other examples of people paying for hugbox forums, so...

I don't get why people use twitter as it is, but paying for it? A good way to see who should be sent to some form of asylum, and never be let out again, though.
Heard a lot of people use it more as an RSS feed. Most people aren't tweeting more than a few times a day.
They should just charge $4.99 a month for an account. They’d get tens of millions of subs the first week.
Doubtful. They'd probably get a hundred thousand in the first week at best. Telling normies to pay up for previously free functions rarely ends well.

If they try and put Trump's account behind a paywall, Twitter is gonna be fucked by the courts. They've already ruled that Trump's account has to be viewable by all and his account is public record. If you restrict who can see it, you're preventing the President's message from getting out there.

The equivalent of the bum fights tapes.

Holy. Shit. Kneon fucking called it. (at 14:20):drink:
Coincidentaly, it was the Chuck Wendig shitstorm that showed how cheap people really are if "free" is not recommended but readily available. If Twitter goes through with this it may be the deathblow everyone has been waiting for. The best things in life are free and boy is acting like a spastic tard online for all to see one of them. 🚬
