I just find it ironic that a website called "TV Tropes", known for being a huge collection of autism on nerdy things no one else would care about, would even care about anything that relates to real world athletics. Lord knows if gender weren't involved, they wouldn't give a shit.

Somewhat off-topic but I really wish they'd just add a proper quote function already. Captain Ahab has been gone for years at this point and, honestly, he's probably dead. The arrow system is idiotic and makes following conversations an unnecessary chore.

It is easily the dumbest system for a forum I have ever seen. Perhaps it is left because, on some level, they realize the conversation is not worth following? :optimistic:

Fast Eddie was being his usual lazy self and claimed that trolls used it, so it must be bad. And the new owners can't be bothered to fix anything.

He was a notorious sockpuppeter, and probably still is. Not likely.

I’m more confused as to why users on TV Tropes care so much about transgender athletes when most of their favorite characters have muscular superheroes that get ogled by cartoon women that look more feminine than TV Tropes posters.

Why We Will Never Have a Quote Button

You guys will have to recall that I've given these reasons many, many times. Here they are again.

1) It's a crappy method of discourse because you can just address the person you are talking to and/or refer back to the post containing the material you are quoting.

How to do that? Here are some options:
  • Hover your mouse pointer over the dateline on this post. See? It's a link to the post.
  • Use the post number. "Re post #4123: While it may be true that ... " works well.
  • Just talk to that human being out there. "Unfortunately, Fast Eddie, we have no access here to whatever supercrack you are smoking ..."
2) If you make it easy, you will see people quoting the post directly above because they have developed a habit of always bashing the quote button when they want to reply. This adds visual clutter and is annoying.

3) A post containing a bunch of quotes each followed by a reply is like the International Symbol for "trolling in progress." Trolls deserve all the extra work we can make for them.

4) It very pointedly ignores all the posts between the quoted material and the reply. This jerks the flow of the conversation backwards and or fractures the conversation, causing there to be multiple 'threads' within the conversation. Confusing, and somebody is bound to be shorted.

5) Quote buttons suck, I don't like them, and since I'm the one who would have to build them for free, they're fucked.
This is some of the most confusing reasoning I've ever seen. Their forum is already terrible to look at, you would think that allowing an actual quote system would be a marked improvement.

That first one makes absolutely no sense. Eddie's calling it a crappy method of discourse but his suggestions are identical to what the quote function is supposed to do. The quote function addresses the person you're talking to and allows you to quickly refer back to the material you're referencing. All quoting does is simplify what he's saying everyone should do, which makes conversing a lot easier.

Not to mention the sentence is so poorly worded it sounds as though Eddie is saying that quote functions are crappy because it allows you to address the person, not that there are alternate means of doing that without the quote function (it still makes no sense because Eddie never explains why it's a crappy form of discourse).

#3 might be related to a bogeyman that he saw, elsewhere.

#4 is an reason that only an autist would love. I mean, you can ignore the some of the debating that goes on here about the medical drawbacks of transitioning to laugh at the delusional reassuring that goes on reddit; if you want an example.

Only goes to show how senile Eddie was.

I almost forgot how bad Star Trek's writing is, at times (if the planet is uncharted, how would you know the name of it?). But they still managed to drive the point in where it counts.
If they just stuck to the scripts they got from geniuses like Harlan Ellison, TOS would have been even better.
