When Reddit started it was run and populated by Right-Libertarian tech entrepeneurs and other more vanguard elements of internet freedom. They're all mostly gone and the people posting now are new.

Reddit is a lot of things, but normal isn't one of them. There are literally thousands of mentally ill communist trannies on there.

I find the insistence that we capitalists who know what sex we are are somehow abnormal and Redditors are the mainstream of society pretty odd.

Relatively new, as in mid 2010s. The crazy commies and endless outrage cycle started with the 2016 election, though it's arguably got more hysterical since then. I do remember Reddit pre-2016 and it was moderate politically, though I wouldn't say libertarians were particularly dominant. The user base seemed a lot more normal than it does now.

Relatively new, as in mid 2010s. The crazy commies and endless outrage cycle started with the 2016 election, though it's arguably got more hysterical since then. I do remember Reddit pre-2016 and it was moderate politically, though I wouldn't say libertarians were particularly dominant. The user base seemed a lot more normal than it does now.

/r/politics used to be so dominated by Ron Paul supporters that around the time of the 2012 election a subreddit was created by angry libs to try to get rid of them, called /r/enoughpaulspam. It was pretty vocally Libertarian during election season.

But my main point is that old reddit would have made fun of that, not enjoyed it.

Comparing that to /r/politics now is...quite something.

What made all the crazy commies start using Reddit between 2012 and 2016? Sounds like Whateley was something written before its time, so to speak.

They found out that they can easily create and enforce their own echo chamber with no chance of retribution from the administration.

David Brock literally purchased moderator positions on the subreddits /r/politics, /r/news, and /r/worldnews.

I think what happened is that whoever wrote that stuff just put it all over the site, and no one else really noticed or cared.

My guess is that the Whateley Academy stuff is similar to all the Pinball examples that popped up around 2016 or so. All of the Pinball entries and the entire category itself were written by one guy.

I think we have a similar thing with the Whateley Academy. I've never read the comic but if it's a Whedon-esque take on the X-Men, it probably was well-liked by Fast Eddie and most of the founding "Old Guard" of the site since they were all huge Joss Whedon fans.

You probably had a single sperg keeping the vigil and posting new examples during the site's weeb phase in the late 2000's and early 2010's, and now it's found a new audience with the troons in the turbo-woke TV Tropes of the Fighteer regime.

True, but Harry Potter remained in the cultural mainstream throughout the 2010's thanks to the movies and the spin-offs plus a very large and very vocal fandom. I could understand why Reddit would bring up Harry Potter, same reason why they'd bring up Star Wars or Marvel Comics. It's one of those older pop culture works that has (or had) some staying power.
