Partly that, partly because a lot of pop culture is made by liberals (or they play one on tv!) so people identify with their creative idols. Also because a lot of pop culture spergs tended to be outcasts when younger, might've been bullied or called faggots or whatever, and if they joined some group it was probably a group like the theater kids who are also largely left-leaning.

The irony is that I suspect most of the 'leftist' SJWs are the ones providing the most creepy entries on TV Tropes. The twin hypocritical uses of 'freedom of speech' and 'strong female characters' cover a veritable cavalcade of crap.
