TV Tropes has always had atrocious taste. I remember when The Human Centipede came out and they were praising it as a clever satire of capitalism or some shit.
Nothing wrong with having dogshit taste but justifying it with reasons like that is what's really shitty.

man why cant i just have escapism anymore. its a predator movie for christs sake stop tryna make it "meaningful" or "deep"
I understand maybe wanting to dip into man's fear of outer space and what we can't comprehend, but what smarmy writer decided to center it on parental trauma? It's like if the next Friday the 13th movie focused on environmentalism. It's stupidly out of left field.

I always thought of it as a parody of reddit.

About the notion of escapism, I think this review they made of The Last Jedi explains why they want films to be more than that.

And if a film is escapism, it can't be something that uses stuff like Top Gun Maverick, regardless of how well done it is.

Kinda hard to call it escapism if you're reeeeeing about the Orange Menace who's only been in office for nearly an year when that film premiered

I got wicked on this because I have like 40 reviews to my name. I'm near the bottom, I'm so thankful that I have a life unlike these guys at the top. 706 reviews is concerning.
