You know the world is filled with problems and injustices to get genuinely angry about...

A dumb movie that'll be forgotten next year isn't one.

It's bizarre to me so many Troper spergs get so wound up over modern SpongeBob. I get it, the show is a big part of a lot of people's childhoods these days, but if it's really that bad just stop watching it. The older episodes still exist, and guess what they still hold up. Just watch those instead. There's no reason to get your panties in a bunch over a show even fans acknowledge isn't all that good anymore.
The same can be said for The Simpsons, especially for the person who runs this blog: www.deadhomersociety.com.

That guy's devolved into anti-Trump sperging on Twitter (after getting laid off - I think - and losing his home, becoming some sort of nomad in the process).

Getting back on topic, the "What an Idiot" page for the Simpsons is something that I can only describe as unadulterated :autism:.
that's the joke.png

It is a simple scenario (someone ruins the set-up of a stupid joke), but as told by a troper it may as well have been written in machine code.

I feel like the idea of humor escapes this troper entirely.

Reading the rest of the page is painful as a Simpsons fan. It's like, how autistic do you have to be to not get how virtually everyone in The Simpsons is supposed to be not very bright and generally incompetent? And most of the "examples" completely miss the joke, like criticizing the town for re-electing Quimby despite him admitting he arranged the murders of his political enemies and the police for not arresting him.

It boggles my mind how someone can just not realize it's a fucking joke.

The strangest thing about is that, on some level, tropers do realize that's the joke - the last sentence of the excerpt I posted shows that much. But yet they go and dissect the joke anyway, either not realizing or ignoring the fact that it invaribly dies in the process.

I'm going to PARTIALLY defend the troper here. Note, partially.

Troping culture is very "meta" in nature, and that whole 'tropes as lego blocks" thinking kinda becomes second nature to the point tropers find it hard to just enjoy media for what it is and instead they over analyze the shit out of the media in question.

I partially defend this because I used to be like this, but I trained myself to quit doing that and quit over analyzing stuff because it was making everything boring. However, if you cannot achieve this effort of will to step back and enjoy media for what it is and not for what you are writing a dissertation on 24/7, you get the painfully autistic dissections of the simplest media into insane essays on hidden meanings that aren't there as has been seen from the more cringe-worthy tropers.

My defense of this ends here, but I will happily concede it's a foolish practice, but unfortunately TV Tropes does nothing to discourage this sort of thing. Whether All The Tropes is any better I leave to others with less clouded judgment to decide.

It's probably a side effect from being an enterbot, given that Enter has sperged about the Simpsons before on Deviantart.
I swear, Enter has such a strangely powerful sway over tropers and I can't figure out why. He's not funny and he's certainly not charismatic, all he does is bitch about modern SpongeBob.

I am really curious as to what he sperged about on The Simpsons though, given the show is probably the embodiment of everything he hates (mean-spiritedness, characters acting stupid or nonsensical, exaggerations of real things that he takes too literally etc).

I don't understand tropers' veneration of TGWTG either.

At the risk of powerleveling, I used to be an enterbot about 4 years ago. I remember liking him for 3 reasons:

-His reactions were funny.
-He had a point sometimes.
-It got cathartic when he complained about the mean-spiritedness of a show because as a kid I used to think like him and ended up feeling bad for characters who didn't deserve anything bad. After all those years, seeing someone who thought the way I did was somewhat of a relief.

I stopped thinking his reactions were funny when I realized that it wasn't an AVGN kind of anger, but rather actual, unwarranted anger from a manchild. I also stopped thinking that he had a point (most of the time) after I saw how formulaic his ideas were and how much of an "I set everything to my standards" mentality he had about cartoons (it became clear as day for me after his Troll review).

The last one, however, is more interesting to explain. You see, I'm putting emphasis on "as a kid I used to think like him", the keywords being "used to". Once I started appreciating dark humor for what it was and learned about narrative structure in general (especially satire and literary irony), I stopped caring about, say, everyone treating Meg like shit. Even if you don't find her running joke of being the world's punching bag, at least you can still tell what the joke is and why people might find it funny. Instead of thinking "Oh, look at how mean everyone is", I started thinking "Maybe that's actually the point. And maybe now I see its purpose".

Enter doesn't seem to have that sort of mentality when judging things and does not look at the bigger picture. Instead, he just thinks about shows trying to have morals and clear inoffensive writing that absolutely everyone can enjoy. You know, zero fucks about the writing's structure or overall conveyance. This is a very limiting mindset to have, not just to animation, but to art in general. This also happens fits perfectly with TVTropes' mentality of "let's categorize everything into a narrative shopping list without trying to look at the bigger picture" along with the reasons I stated for liking him, which is probably why they like him so much.

Perhaps the common thread between TVT and Entersphere is that both are ardently against mean-spiritedness and bad fee-fees (not to mention both are obsessed with children entertainment)?

The fact that there's even a "What An Idiot" page for The Simpsons in the first place is honestly fucking redundant. It'd be so much easier to just stick the trope in YMMV and say "This is a staple of the show's humor" and call it a day, but then I suppose it'd deprive tropers of the incessant need to break media down moment-by-moment.

They love Enter so much that someone sneakily posted him to the ever-autistic Pantheon section. Turns out he wasn't permitted to be listed there. I'm kinda surprised by that one.

*giant off-topic post*
I agree with you on a lot of stuff, but I think we should have spoilered our spergings. I was merely a lurker a few days ago and I'm still trying to learn, so I'm sorry for that TL;DR I wrote that could've been delivered better. I still stand by what I said, though.

Back to the topic, I find it sad that this site techincally did not exist during the Troper Tales era of TVTropes. The Brilliant But Lazy and Insufferable Genius sections were my personal favorites because of all the unwarranted arrogance tropers seemed to have and their overestimation of their intelligence. In the latter page, there is an archived example of someone saying that he was an asshole, but he was a genius because he managed to figure out sex:
This troper is a complete dick... and also accomplishes such feats as FIGURING OUT SEX using merely logic and the process of elimination (figuratively speakng, of course)
