  • Yellowface in movies was never really critically popular, especially after the abolition of miscegenation laws that had forced it to take place in such classics as The Good Earth and Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing and the growing presence and influence of Asians in Hollywood, but Ghost in the Shell may very well be the final nail in the coffin, not just for that but also for racial insensitivity in general in mainstream Hollywood movies. Not helping are the successes of such films as Get Out and the ethnically-diverse The Fast and the Furious film franchise nor a threatened boycott of Netflix over their adaptation of Death Note, due for release in the summer of 2017.

LOL no one watches The Fast and Furious films for their ethnically-diverse cast -- unless by "cast" you mean "cars".

Death Note salt thread when

also wasn't Get Out the "white people are scary" fear-mongering movie? how is that film "progressive"?
iirc, it's more like "white people who gloat about how much they love blacks but still treat them like shit" are scary

basically people who crow about being woke are piles of shit. at least that's what i hear

I've never seen the Ghost in the Shell film and don't plan to, but I'm sure Scarlett Johansson doesn't paint her face yellow.

The "southern cone" of South America, Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay, all have a higher proportion of white population than the United States and are fairly modern societies with general internet access. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the tropers came from there themselves.

There is actually a lot of diversity in Argentina, but it's between the Spanish, Italians, French, and Germans. The black and Muslim population is next to none.
Actually, there is a fair amount of people with african descent in South America, not just dominicans, cubans or what have you. In fact, people from South America can be quite the SJWs at times when it comes to race given how diverse race can get in some countries. It's not uncommon to see them on the internet, so places like TVTropes aren't that far off.

Not in Argentina. Afro-Argentines are 0.37% of the population.

Southern Brazil has a white supremacist secessionist movement, though I sincerely doubt any of them use TV Tropes. Traditionally blacks and pardos (mixed race people), who recently came to comprise a plurality of Brazil, mostly lived in the north where the old plantations were, but in the late 20th century more of them started to move south to work. This led to demands from some southern whites for independence.

South Americans have a range of political views, just like people from anywhere else.

I see. Argentina and Brazil do have an interesting history of colonization, given how a lot of their population is of european descent, especially Argentina. Places like Peru or Chile, though, are a different story.

I usually see english mistakes there that only hispanic people can make because of their language's quirks, so I often assume that mexicans/venezuelans/ecuadorians/etc. wrote them. And I can remember at least a few instances of tropers powerleveling about their nationality in Troper Tales and this page:

Chile is a mixture of white and native American, with more people identifying at white than native. The black population is negligible.

Most people in Peru are native or mestizo, and a few blacks and Asians.

The southern cone, and to a lesser extent southern Brazil, was more attractive to white European immigration due to its temperate climate and relative prosperity. Tropical states like Peru received comparatively little after independence and are mostly mestizo or native, with a few black descendants of slaves. Traditionally the black and mixed race population of Brazil was also concentrated in the tropics, but some have since moved south to find work, in the same way that southern blacks moved north in the 20th century in the United States.

Peru is only 15% white, with most people being native or mestizo, and a few blacks and Asians.

The label "mestizo" in Peru is often used as a blanket statement for black people as well, given how descent in Peru has always been mixed in some way. Racism towards african descendants is a thing there. I don't know what you mean by "white", though, given Chile's history with Peru after its independence. Do you have a source for that?

I don't really want to create a discussion because it's starting to get off-topic, though.

What I meant was that while Afro Peruvians are a significant proportion of Peru, there are very few black people in Chile, only really around the city of Arica which they seized from Peru. Most people call themselves white, though in reality many have some native American descent. I edited my post to clarify that.

Relating this back to TV Tropes, it means that the nations of the southern cone have very low black populations, so wouldn't be particularly bothered with social justice issues concerning them.

SJWing in Latin America is not necessarily limited to dark skinned people, though.

It seems unlikely that people from nations with tiny black populations would be that concerned with black representation. I can imagine Native American issues would be very popular among them, but the American social justice crowd doesn't focus on that for the most part.

I'm pretty sure the most SJWs down there would be the upper-class white kids tho, as is the case in USA and Europe.

Though, latinos sperging about wanting more muslims in their countries would be hilarious (and rather depressing) to see.

Paraguay and Bolivia have very small white populations, and whites are minority everywhere in South America, except the southern cone. I wouldn't expect most South American internet users to be white, except in the southern cone. The only country with a Muslim population of any note is Brazil, and there have been foiled terrorist plots there.

At least in Peru that is actually a pretty popular insult to anyone in politics (mostly political wannabes) who's rich but is a leftist.

Back to TVTropes, I've always wondered how quickly they went from pedo apologists to classical leftards when Fast Eddie stopped running the site. I've seen that topic getting on this thread, but I can't find much of a history for that. I'd like to see more of the mass purge of pedos the site had during their sponsorship drama.
