I've already written why I really dislike this site and it's frustrating impact on analizing media. TvTropes have nothing in common in discussing storytelling devices. They are just labelling everything, from archetypes that exist in every strory and write oh-so-ironical descrpition that conflict with site's statement that "tropes are not bad" to characters' eye colours. What importance for storytelling have eye colour of some cartoon character?! And every smallest idea that happend in more than one movie.
But what's really irritates me lately is, that because of this site people just use the word "trope" in every movie review, usually in negative context. "Oh yeah, I've seen similar idea, who cares that executed in very different way, in another movie, I'm gonna call this a trope in my review to looks so clever".
People use the world trope as a synonym to "cliche" AND "archetype" AND "genre convention" AND "meme" AND some other things. So basically everything is cliche for them. Especially something they don't like.
OK, why I'm writing this rant now? Because I've seen a movie with my parents, really interesting movie ("Fotograf", 2014) and wanted to google some information about some real-life inspirations behind a story. In every of 3 articles about movie there was at least a small section of text quickly reviewing movie. In every single one the word "trope" was used. In two of them as a synonym for "cliche". All articles was written in Polish.
What's the most interesting is the fact such thing as "trope" does not exist in Polish language. There is no way to translate it's meaning correctly. And our texts about media happily existed without it. Until about 2011/2012 . It is usually translated as "trop", which is irritating, because "trop" is already existing word that means a clue.
The word "cliche" ("klisza") in the same meaning than in English/French became popular after 2010. People usually called this "sztampa" before.
You can really tell that most of people using "klisza" or "trop" in their texts have read too much of English-language internet rants or watch too much of TGWG.
So, maybe I'm exaggerating, but it seems that popularity of TvTropes website and site's format have spread some irritating tendencies in writing about culture worldwide. Methods from website filled with cartoon fethishist are now found in serious text about Polish cinema.
I had classes on storytelling/script-writing two years ago and really, this is not a way in which media should be analyzed and written about.
