Unrelated but I was in the thread for renaming "Darkness Induced Audience Apathy" to "Too Bleak, Stopped Caring" and to this day, I have no idea what that accomplished. People still use the trope wrong, and if anything the new name just makes it sound more vague than before. But God help you if you actually try and tell them this in those """"cleanup"""" threads, they'll talk to you like you're being unreasonable.

Adding WORDSWORKDSWORDS never solves anything!

Seriously? That was one of the few well named ones. I bet they still have tropes named for some obscure anime nobody has watched in 20 years.

Yeah, like the Xanatos Gambit.
Greg's writing has become saturated with this trope ever since Gargoyles, while neglecting near everything else. It's how Young Justice ended up suffering ratings.

I'm not even exaggerating. ALL of Greg's projects involve Machivellian masterminds who always somehow manage to scrape a win. It's getting old and makes the heroes look impotent.

This is kind of off topic, but the YouTube channel “Overly Sarcastic Productions” is full of the TVtropes brand of media analysis and it makes me want to KMS. Red is a person who’s gotten her entire brand of media literacy from obsessing over trope articles. She’s not a lolcow (though the other person on her channel, the history guy, makes terrible videos) but she’s introducing a whole new generation to this shit-tier tvtropes type discussion. She also talks about fucking children’s media like it’s the gospel for narrative writing, to the extent of prioritizing it over actual classics. I also hold a grudge against her for saying 2001 actually sucked but that’s just me being petty.

I like mythology stuff so I run into her content constantly which is annoying because she deliberately sanitizes all her myths (Persephone and Hades totally isn’t rape guyzzz), interprets anything possible as LGBT (like saying the goddess Artemis is “Demiromantic” or some bullshit) and just reads off wikipedia for half her videos. Also general SocJus shit. And yet they have 2 million subscribers from having the most surface level discussion imaginable.

The way she talks is like a walking TvTropes article.

I think the way TvTropes looks at media has to be the most genuinely unproductive way to look at any narrative. Isolating narrative blocks down to tropes, isolated Things that Happen, leads to this bullshit reductive discussion, which is why the entire website is crippled by autism and obsessions with children’s media. It was doomed from the get go.

I've seen a lot of her myth videos and had a lot of fun with the Stanger in a Strange Land recap. I just skip the "trope talk" videos and that worked for a while. I'm not sure if her videos are leaning harder on the LGBT+ cultism and general Moloch worship or if I'm just becoming less tolerant, but even the stuff I liked feels like it's getting harder to watch these days. Makes you feel unclean in a way.

I really do think that it has everything to do with the place from which they're analyzing these stories, and that's something that equally applies to the TVT crowd. They're interpreting stories about the human condition through their own infantile, narcissistic, and frivolous 21st century Western understanding of what it means to be a human being.

Of course, we all do that to an extent. None of us are untainted by our milieu. The difference is that these people aren't trying to escape it. To them, mythology and history don't seem to be windows into a more serious and meaningful world that has the power to transform a person. They never stop to think that maybe man is more than a creature that consumes media and ships anime characters. They love the old architecture, but don't get that you can't have that without the beliefs that go with it. The stories are just another form of passive entertainment, except this one makes you look brainy to your subreddit.

I hope that's not too unfair, and I think it applies more as a general rule than to any specific person.

You managed to say exactly what I meant more eloquently than I ever could, thanks.

I think that’s really more my issue more than the LGBT cult shit, though as you said it does make me feel unclean. That’s annoying, but what can you do. The problem is that that’s just a symptom of their (and her specifically) root issue, which is what you said - analyzing all these ancient and beautiful stories through this 21st century fandom/consooomerist mindset. The fandomification of Fucking EVERYTHING on the internet is one of the most annoying cultural shifts I’ve ever had to witness online.

Trope Talks is I think the worst of anything Red makes because it exemplifies what her focus in terms of media consumption is when she’s not talking about myths: children’s shows and superhero media. It’s like arrested development. People who are in their late 20s and still hyperfocused on shows meant for children are just kind of pathetic or watch. Especially when they‘re attempting to cover serious topics or content: it is always absurd because they can never escape the lense they view the childish content through. When Red talks about actual culturally significant myths, they seem more like anime recaps or cartoons than actual ancient stories, which might be intentional but kind of hurts to watch.

It just makes me sad.

TV Tropes is still doing Rick & Morty posting after eight years

Their posts remind me of this site. 3000 Level IQ and all.

I remember her being described by the general heathen community (they do exist and they're not Twitter pagans) as Tumblresque, that term being used in a derogatory way.

Like those heathens were the type to say " our gods should not reveal their name to you" strict bastards.

My knowledge of Young Justice is cursory at best, but I'm aware of this one scene where it's outright stated that the villains know all of the Justice Leagues secret identities and family members and they choose to do nothing with this information. The "justification" is that if ever start killing families, then it'll start a superhero war and they'll all end up dead but like...isn't that the point? Your villains, you do bad things because you want to beat the heroes.

So you have heroes who are so incompetent and complacent they let all their loved ones hang out in tiny, easily targetable areas and villains who are genuinely afraid to do anything about it. Like what are we even doing here?

I do like her content but you've said it the best, Red talks about serious cultural myths that form the basis of entire lifestyles with the same reverence you'd give some bullshit cartoon. Especially when she has to stop her storytelling to talk about how it makes HER feel. She comes off like a manchild that wants to do serious literary analysis but never escaped her teenage tumblr phase.

There's a difference between "We do bad things because we're villains" and "Let's literally kill ourselves."

It's like saying Russia and America should've started the Cold War because they were on the same planet.

Now with this I have mix feeling I mean yeah its sweet because Yost was pick on set for being gay and stuff. But at the same time I see this as TV Tropes being less genuine As I mean they don't even fucking say Lesbian ranger instead it's "LGBTQ Ranger" so it feels more like vitual signaling from TV Tropes.

Honselty noting TV Tropes does and do feel genuine for me.
