You know how pretty much everyone is loving the new Top Gun movie? Well, one TV Tropes user has this to say on it.

Cause heaven forbid a film make callbacks to the past in a way that is positive, as opposed to it being "outdated".

What a pompous, contrarian ass. I bet that fucker liked the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy (or pretended to like it so he can be as contrarian as possible).
Basically, he's assmad that the movie flies in the face of the woke zeitgeist. Maybe that's why Top Gun: Maverick is so successful: No character assassination. Maverick is back, and he doesn't get sidelined in favor of a young black lesbian kween who somehow is better at everything. The one female aviator that appears in the movie is not given special treatment due to her gender - she's just another aviator who happens to be female. No hamfisted political messages. No "America bad" rhetoric, in fact, this movie let Americans feel good about their country for once. No "whypipo bad, boomers bad, etc."

Top Gun: Maverick avoided all mistakes that have soured people on cinema in the past, and this pseudointellectual prick just can't have that.

EDIT: Sorry for sperging out, but I really enjoyed that movie.

A few choice quotes from that review that are very telling.

"If I have to watch a rush of heroes fight a bad guy then I'd rather watch a spandex crimefighter fight a big purple guy than point to an enemy nation and say Americans are going to beat them in some fictionalized scenario that leans toward America as the unambiguous good guy. I can enjoy the original film for being a cheesy action flick, but the sequel is being released at a time when the factors of the film couldn't be more divorced from reality."

"The conclusion is that by bombing the bad guys, America will win once again. Yet anyone that followed the last two wars can say bombing bad guys doesn't solve the problem. If anything, the portrayal of the enemy as faceless simply just encourages the bad attitudes within the public that persisted in those wars."

"Whereas the original film at least had the guts to depict what could go wrong in a training exercise using dangerous equipment, the sequel shies away from presenting casualties in its let's-feel-good-about-war movie. Maverick is even rewarded several times over for openly disobeying military doctrine. He possesses an anti-authoritarian yet submissive rhetoric that really doesn't go in any particular direction and its not clear what its trying to say about military chain of command, if its saying anything at all."

"The portrayal of older is better is a further indication that this film really wishes it could leave the bleak war connected events of the modern day and return back to the 80's when war heroes only needed a can-do American attitude and some elbow grease. Maverick doesn't need to adjust to a new world, but rather shows why he is better than anyone else just through pure capability. The drones that dominate US air operations today are barely mentioned at all and much of the story is about the newbies (who are barely characterized) being humbled by the older pilot. The film seems to echo the statements of older generations seeing the younger generations as entitled, all while keeping itself in a bubble of nostalgia."

"Considering the failures of the Afghanistan War and the public's wide acceptance of standing on the sideline regarding Ukraine, showing American military forces as heroes of the war comes off as insensitive if not outright blind to the suffering that has occurred/ is still occurring in these conflicts. There's an old saying "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" but with films like this, maybe the true condemnation comes to a public that can ignore the present as well."

Like, this really sounds like he's mad that the film didn't try to go political, show the older guy as being the one who needs to learn from the new, and generally portray an old-school nostalgic feeling as something other than outdated in our "current year". Seriously, "bubble of nostalgia" and "condemnation of a public that ignores the present?"

And I also love how he insinuates that Maverick being better than the others through his capability is somehow a flaw. Like, how dare he not be shown as decrepit, but instead still as worthy and talented as he was back then? How dare he show the younger generation an example to follow and learn from, rather than being cast aside for what's "progressive?"

It really does show much of the mentality of the users of the site quite well (all progressive themes and condemnation of the "bigoted past" is good, anything that shows it in a nostalgic light is outdated).

Yeah. There have been times I've been annoyed about some people's rose tinted glasses about the past (especially when it comes at a cost of not appreciating how good the present is) but the new standard has gone way in the opposite direction. It's like there's this new trope that if something isn't present day then it's a wretched hellscape that makes Mad Max seem like a picnic.

I've seen that guy, ImmortalBear. Basically, he's TVT's premier reviewer, in that he has more activities making reviews for shit he consooms. Unfortunately, not all of his reviews shine like gold, but rather smells like piss. Also, I found his Last Jedi review as proof:
