Really, TVtropes is not making you know uber-everything about storytelling and It won't replace actual education and serious books on subject. And it's really get on my nerves when people are linking article to the site instead of explaining what THEY are thinking.
Reading TVT won't
1) make you a better author; literally all creation by tropers are cringe-worthily bad.
2) make you a better critic: shoehorning characters, events, ect in pigeonholes is not literary criticism.
3) make you a better conversationist. Mentioning dumb, nerdy "trope names" among your friends will only embarrass yourself.

If one wanted to be a better author, one would be better off finding a web page that gives actual advice from someone that writes well.

If one wanted to be a better critic, one would have a better chance in pointing out how a work falls short or how it does well as in how well written was it or how bad was the acting.

As for conversationist, bringing up tropes to people would most likely bring about blank stares and an air of awkwardness. No one knows what the hell one is talking about when they mention a trope like "the starscream" or "moral event horizon". They jargon just flies over their heads.

Their trope names like "the dragon" and such just screams "i'm a nerd ecksdee!!11".

TV Tropes had a parasitic relationship with TGWTG: TGWTG used to mention TVT in their shows which made tropers went gaga. In return, tropers immortalized dumb throwaway gags in TGWTG as "trope names" -- on top of my mind is "Big Lipped Alligator Moment" but there are countless others.

Pretty vanilla and bland, mostly Geth just confirming a few things about about All The Tropes a few people were speculating on in the /cow/ thread and inviting questions and admitting he doesn't give a crap if someone tries to troll him, he just wants them to be funny about it if they want to try.

Besides, that last gag/trope name came from a movie that sucked ass in both the box office and by aggregate reviews.

To be fair, it is incredibly annoying when it does come up in media (Family Guy being one of the worst offenders, from what I've witnessed). I'll give them that much.

It's the overly detailed explanations on why they're bad on most of them is what bugs me.

The South Park shallow parody section is nitpicky and borderline nonsensical.

Half of the entries there are just complaining that their favourite comic or anime or whatever didn't get fairly represented by someone. Almost as if they were just making a joke.
Franky, it seems to waver in and out between legit criticism and shitty jokes/whining over how a parody show didn't give their favorite thing the attention it deserved. Or just generalizing certain things without better explanation.

As I said before, something like Family Guy should know better given it's run entirely on such jokes. But something like Robot Chicken or South Park? Probably not considering most of it's either supposed to be like that or are just the characters in different situations.
