Turkey sends new drill ship to eastern Mediterranean

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Ankara did not need to "seek permission from anyone" to drill in the region. Greece and Cyprus accuse Turkey of illegally exploring for gas deposits in their territory.

The Abdulhamid Han, named after an Ottoman sultan, is set to drill for gas in the eastern Mediterranean
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday inaugurated the country's newest drilling ship that he said would be sent to an area northwest of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean.

The vessel, known as the Abdulhamid Han, is Turkey's largest undersea hydrocarbon drill ship.

What do we know about the mission?

Erdogan said the ship would begin drilling at the Yorukler-1 well, about 55 kilometers (34 miles) off the coast of Gazipasa, in Turkey's southwestern Antalya province.

The country's other drill ships — Fatih, Kanuni and Yavuz — are operating in the Black Sea where Turkey has discovered natural gas reserves. All four ships are named after Ottoman sultans.

Turkey is almost entirely reliant on imports to meet its energy needs. Rising global energy prices have hindered Erdogan's government from reaching its goal of achieving a budget surplus. Turkey imported around 45% of its natural gas last year from Russia.

Erdogan called the Abdulhamid Han a "symbol of Turkey's new vision in the area of energy."

"The sooner we can increase our natural gas and oil resources, which have turned into weapons in the global economic crisis, the more advantage we will gain in this critical process," Turkey's president said.

"It will help us both reduce our energy dependency and close our current account deficit."

'We don't need to seek permission from anyone'

While the area initially designated for the ship is not in disputed waters, Erdogan said the Abdulhamid Han will continue to search for gas until it finds it, potentially leading it to areas claimed by Cyprus.

Turkey and Cyprus have for years been embroiled in a dispute over maritime borders, and the EU has imposed sanctions on Ankara over drilling off the island country.

"Our exploration and drilling in the Mediterranean is within our own sovereign dominion," Erdogan said at the inauguration ceremony.

"Neither the puppets nor the ones who hold their strings will be able to prevent us from getting our rights in the Mediterranean," the Turkish president declared, in an apparent reference to Greece, Cyprus and Western allies.

"We don't need to seek permission or ratification from anyone," Erdogan added. "We will take what is ours."

NATO partner Greece also accuses Turkey of illegally exploring for gas deposits off of Greek islands. The Turkish government rejects the accusations, saying that Greek islands near the Turkish coast should not be used when defining maritime borders.

In 2020, Turkey sent a seismic survey ship escorted by warships to an area in the eastern Mediterranean to which Greece claims exclusive rights. Athens later sent its own warships, and the two countries conducted military exercises in a show of force.

The Turkish economy has been shit for many years. Inflation especially has been a major problem and the Turks I know tell me that the cost of living is extremely high in comparison to wages.

Recently the government raised the minimum wage and then it was shocked that prices went up again. This is another case of Erdogan pissing his pants to warm himself. The discovery of oil could help in the short term, but it will antagonize the shit out of the EU. He can't go to Russia now that he has been supporting Ukraine and apparently snubbed Putin at a diplomatic meeting.

I think that many people regret not supporting the military coup attempt.

Erdo also refuses to raise the interests rate cause usury is haram or something. But their problem is systemic - they've been fueling their growth with foreign debt since the 70s, banking on cheap export. Now that the standard of living has increased those exports aren't so cheap anymore and putting your eggs in the "cheap shit"-basket for the last 30 years isn't conductive to an high-added-value economy .The last time the Lira crashed was in the early 2000s .

Oh well , I guess i could go for some shopping on Saturday

NATO is a vehicle for international cuckolding, and Turkey's continued presence is the bull

I remember reading a book a few years back where some political scientist predicted that within the next hundred years, Turkey would be responsible for starting a global war. Not one that goes nuclear, just a global conventional war.

I can't think of one country bordering Turkey that doesn't hate them.
Sèvres Syndrome is a common conspiracy amongst some nationalistic Turks that every nation is out to get them somehow. "The Turk Has No Friend but the Turk" is pretty accurate in describing Turkey's relationships with its neighbours as Erdogan is in power. I don't think Atatürk is looking down at Erdoğan too happily.

  • Bulgaria: Turkey and Bulgaria's relationship is at best neutral and at worst suspicious. Bulgaria sometimes accuses Turkey of meddling with its affairs. The Ottoman legacy and the treatment of Bulgarian Turks in Communist Bulgaria rouses tensions.

  • Greece: Turkey and Greece have spats over everything including airspaces and territory.

  • Armenia: Turkey refuses to recognize the Armenian Genocide and they side with Azerbaijan.

  • Iran: Iran sides with Armenia over Azerbaijan.

  • Iraq and Syria: Turkey's historical annexation of Hatay and its involvement in the war concerns Syria and Iraw that it may just be another opportunity for a land grab.

  • Georgia: Turkey and Georgia aren't very close and it's only for trade purposes really.

Let me just end with this quote with our favourite Sultan.

"Turkey is not just Turkey. Apart from its 79 million citizens, it is also responsible to the hundreds of millions of our brothers in the geographical area to which we are connected by historical and cultural ties ... Certain historians believe that the borders set by the National Contract include Cyprus, Aleppo, Mosul, Erbil, Kirkuk, Batumi, Thessaloniki, Kardzhali, Varna and the [Greek] islands of the Aegean."

And he wonders why most of Turkey's neighbours aren't really fond of them.

Edit: oh yeah BTW, two months ago Turkey was complaining of Greece's" expansionist claims" in the Aegean and they threatened to go to war over it. :story:
