Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump announced Thursday the official establishment of the US military's Space Command.

"Those who wish to harm the United States, to seek to challenge us on the ultimate high ground of space, it's going to be a whole different ballgame," Trump said at a White House ceremony marking the command's establishment.

Space Command will become the 11th combatant command, joining the ranks of US Central Command, which oversees operations in the Middle East, and US Special Operations Command, which oversees Special Operations Forces.

The command will initially consist of just 287 personnel and its final location has yet to be determined. Its responsibilities will be transferred primarily from US Strategic Command.

The command's establishment comes as the US has grown increasingly concerned about threats to its satellites, which are critical to military operations and commercial business.

"We no longer have the luxury of treating space superiority as a given," Air Force Gen. John Raymond, the incoming US Space Command commander, told reporters at the Pentagon on Thursday.

"There is a growing threat. The scope, scale and complexity is concerning," Raymond said, adding that "there's reversible jamming of GPS communication satellites. There's directed energy threats. There's missiles that can be shot from the ground and blow up a satellite, like was demonstrated by China in 2007. So there's a full spectrum. We're concerned about all of those threats."

While the command's establishment has received broad support, Trump also spoke Thursday about the creation of a US Space Force, a military branch his administration wants to see established under the Department of the Air Force, similar to how the Marine Corps sits under the Department of the Navy.

Space Command "will soon be followed -- very importantly -- by the establishment of the United States Space Force as the sixth branch of the United States Armed Forces," Trump said, adding that the Space Force will "organize, train and equip warriors to support Space Command's mission."
It's official now. United States Space Command or The Space Force is now our newest branch of the military. Here's their website https://www.spacecom.mil/

Not gonna lie I disagree with Orange Man about a lot of things but this is actually a really good idea. Most likely will be beneficial to us in the long run.

It's so tiresome how people feel compelled to add this disclaimer every time they're "forced" to admit they like something Trump's said or done as President. "I totes hate this guy, but this one thing he did was kinda okay."

He needs to say more about those "flying tic tacs" beyond his previous "I've been briefed on it, and I saw it, and i'm not a believers in UFOs, but our pilots see them"

Come on, if any of that stuff is true then people have a right to know sooner rather than later.

Of course it's true, pilots have been reporting UFO's since WW2 & if we consider that pilots often lose their jobs for reporting these things, there are bound to be a huge number of sightings that nobody knows about. UFO's are real but there's a fair chance there's no aliens inside them. They might be a natural phenomenon that we just aren't able to understand yet.

Our human arrogance makes many people think that our technology levels concerning space travel is at the pinnacle of universal ability but how can it be if we've only been exploring space for less than a century ? Imagine what we'll be able to do & how far we'll be able to travel in a few thousand years. I doubt we're alone in the universe but we might be.

The thing is, UFOs are things that can't be explained yet, so saying "it exists" would mean nothing and could potentially create fear among the population. Some countries have groups dedicated to record every deposition of every citizen who saw a UFO, it's the case in France for example, where the Gendarmerie has a small division dedicated to it.

By the way, don't believe Bob Lazar.

I have read that name before but i don't really remember anything about him. I didn't care about UFOs until the mainstream media started reporting on UFOs in a serious manner. I don't trust any of those Tom Delongue types, and I also don't trust the new narrative about UFOs. The German nazi rocket scientist allegedly said that America is planning a fake alien invasion, I used to think that he probably never even said that, but now i'm not sure.

He's a guy who claimed to have worked at or near Area 51 (it depends on the story). He was part of a team in charge of studying a UFO, he said that he went inside etc. There's no proof of what he said of course. One time he said that the personel would use a special hand scanner to open the doors in the building, a thing that would identify individuals based on the bone density in their hands or some shit like that. It turned out that the device was a prop from a science fiction movie.
If you want to laugh, you can listen to his appearance on the Joe Rogan Podcast.

Is anyone concerned over the potential of an arms race happening? Russia, China, they aren't going to sit by and just let us dominate outer space.
If this leads to a better way to monitor any weird activity around Earth and the solar system (I'm thinking about the asteroids, the actual threat) then I'm fine with that.

It can't be helped nowadays. I don't wanna fall into the autistic partisan camps "Master Omnipotent God King 72D Chess Master Trump does it again!" camp nor the "Drumpf man bad. All he does is bad! Racist, misogynistic scum!" camp. People have obnoxiously binary views when it comes to politics in this day and age so having the need to be as transparent as possible is only natural.

No matter what you think of Trump or of this plan, you have to admit it's cool as fuck.

Mobile suits when.

Operation Bughouse should have been called "Operation Madhouse." Everything went wrong. It had been planned as an all-out move to bring the enemy to their knees, occupy their capital and the key points of their home planet, and end the war. Instead it damn near lost the war. I am not criticizing General Diennes. I don't know whether it's true that he demanded more troops and more support and allowed himself to be overruled by the Sky Marshal-in-Chief—or not. Nor was it any of my business. Furthermore I doubt if some of the smart second-guessers know all the facts. What I do know is that the General dropped with us and commanded us on the ground and, when the situation became impossible, he personally led the diversionary attack that allowed quite a few of us (including me) to be retrieved—and, in so doing, bought his farm. He's radioactive debris on Klendathu and it's much too late to court-martial him, so why talk about it?

Nah. It's easy to say "hey, this thing he's doing is great!" or "this is really stupid" without adding full political position disclosures. Let people have their own hangups. "I disagree with him on lots of things but..." is just jerking off trying to play to "both sides."

There are certain people in the sci-fi geek community (I don’t mean insult, I count myself among them) who are horribly torn. Do they rejoice at the possible culmination of years of fantasies, or rage that it’s Trump doing it?

I find myself remembering a tweet that was posted by some comedian following the Brexit vote. Saying that we were moving away from the Federation, or something. Were we?

I actually like what he's doing even though I'm not american. Government space agencies don't seem to do shit anymore (they're too busy playing politics with the Climate Change™ crap), I thought that the private sector would have given a kick to space exploration again but only SpaceX seems to have the balls to do something, so now I think it's the army and the Space Force-like operations that will push the boundaries. I remember when he announced Space Force, people were making fun of it, saying that he wants to go to war etc. there won't be a war, it will force the other big countries to develop the same type of military/research division. It's the first step to bigger achievements since a Man walked on the Moon.
...or perhaps I'm 100% wrong and too optimistic for once,

The EU failed because it got way too big and the people currently in power aren't elected directly by the people. I like Star Trek but I hate the idea of a world government because it would feel too much like a dictatorship but I think it's bound to happen one day if humanity establishes a communication with an intelligent life out there in the cosmos. In the end it's just realpolitik.

if humanity establishes a communication with an intelligent life
I never thought about it before, but if we find intelligence out there, why should we care if it is life or not?

Only non-living intelligence we could possibly find from space would be some kind of AI-remnants of already fallen civilization, in which case it's a moot point, as we would have very little interest in dealing with in any other way than crushing it's potential robot minions and studying it's technology.

However, any other living civilization we eventually encounter will be in one aspect very much like us; it will be the apex predator of it's own home world, just like we are of the Earth. And we all know what that means.
