Justin Trudeau is certainly no stranger to Indian wear — he has regularly worn it during official celebrations of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, which is one of the most important events on the religious calendar. And as his picture from last year's festival shows, he certainly does not shy away from donning some true Bollywood-style bling.

While there were a few comments about the elaborate silver motif on his traditional black sherwani at the time, these have absolutely paled in comparison to the reaction he has been getting in India over the past few days.

Mr. Trudeau arrived for his first official visit to India on 17 February and has been jet-setting around the country to take part in what appears to be a series of photo ops cunningly designed to showcase his family's elaborate traditional wardrobe.

The trip, which has just one day of official engagements despite being a full week in duration, has raised eyebrows in Canada with Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre wishing him "another wonderful vacation."

But Indians are sitting up and taking notice for an entirely different reason. And that is the fact that his outfits have just been so ... extra.

The Canadian first family has worn traditional Indian outfits no less than three times on their trip so far.

The first time was while they visited the Sabarmati ashram, the residence of Mahatma Gandhi in the western state of Gujarat. The family, wearing colorful casual kurta shirts and garlands of flowers around their necks, posed in front of a traditional spinning wheel before visiting the Akshardam temple where they posed some more with bemused Indian trustees.

They wore more sober but no less elaborate outfits when they visited the Golden Temple, one of the holiest shrines for Sikhs, located in the northern state of Punjab. Mr Trudeau wore a white sherwani with gold thread work, while the rest of his family also had a strong gold theme running through their clothes.

They posed for pictures with heads appropriately bowed and hands folded before Mr Trudeau met Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh who looked visibly underdressed in comparison.

At this point, some people were beginning to notice a trend and were not quite sure it all worked, including the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah.

But Mr. Trudeau was by no means done.

His family met several Bollywood stars in the western city of Mumbai and he wore an elaborate and heavily worked sherwani, more in tune with what a bridegroom would wear in a Bollywood film. His wife wore an embroidered sari and his children were also decked out in what can only be described as Indian wedding wear.

The outfits stood out all the more because the Bollywood stars around him — who should perhaps take the blame for his wardrobe decisions — were in sober black suits.

And social media just could not stand by in polite silence anymore:

"Even if Trudeau was an Indian groom at his wedding reception he’d look ridiculously overdressed," user Shivam Vij tweeted.

Meet the newly wed indian couple. #JustinTrudeau wearing indian groom costume and #KristyDuncan wearing typical indian bridal maroon dress standing outside Hindu Temple and Trudeau wearing wedding necklace (Indian wedding custom) Perfect. #TrudeauInIndia" tweeted Navdeep Singh.

Even the media headlines considerably changed tone from "resplendent and festive" to "too flashy even for an Indian".

So far, Mr Trudeau has seemed unfazed by the slew of criticism that has dogged his Indian trip. His office has denied that he is being "snubbed" by the Indian government, and they have brushed off accusations that he is on a "holiday" at state expense.

But his sartorial sense — or the lack of it — has provided enough amusement to Indians.

NEW DELHI - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau cannot catch a break in India.

Trudeau, accustomed to being praised for his Prince Charming good looks, is getting a lot of flak on his tour of India, and the latest gags focus on his razzle-dazzle wardrobe, upstaging even India’s flamboyant movie stars.

Offending garments include Trudeau’s long, multicolored sherwanis, usually worn on special occasions such as weddings or in Bollywood movies. Trudeau wore a sparkling gold one to a meeting with Bollywood’s top brass while the film stars wore muted black suits. Add to that the Canadian first family’s posey, soap-opera style namastes, and it’s enough to keep social media here buzzing with memes and jokes.

“It’s a little over the top,” Vivek Dehejia, an economics professor at Carleton University in Ottawa told Canada’s Global News. “I understand on day one having to wear the traditional clothes, but now it’s getting too much.”

The gaffes about the razzmatazz outfits are latest in a series of fiascos during Trudeau’s India visit. First, the leader was teased for being “snubbed” by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi when a junior agricultural minister was sent to receive him at the airport.

Many pointed out that Modi, known for his social media savvy, did not even tweet a welcome on the Trudeaus’ arrival until five days into the trip.

Then, Trudeau was trolled for misspelling “Gandhi” in a tweet sent from the revered Indian leader’s ashram.

Trudeau’s India trip has been beset by allegations that his Liberal Party curries favor with Canada’s prominent Sikh minority by supporting secessionist Sikh groups that want an independent homeland called Khalistan. Trudeau’s administration has denied backing pro-Khalistan groups.

On Thursday, Trudeau’s attendance at the Canada-India business summit was overshadowed by embarrassing revelations that the Canadian High Commission (the country’s diplomatic mission in India) had issued, and then rescinded, official invitations to Jaspal Atwal, a businessman convicted of trying to assassinate an Indian politician in the 1980s.

Outlook magazine said the Canadian High Commission also rescinded an invitation to its bureau chief because of an unflattering cover story pointing out links between the Trudeau administration and pro-Khalistan groups.

“Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau feted the world over as the new face of ‘liberalism’ seems to find it difficult to accommodate critical media coverage,” an announcement from the magazine read.

Meanwhile, on social media, memes and jokes about the Trudeaus’ attire are spreading. Some Indians are offering style advice to the leader, while others accuse him of cultural appropriation.

One politician tweeted: “Is it just me or is this choreographed cuteness all just a bit much now? Also FYI we Indians don’t dress like this every day sir, not even in Bollywood.”

Vanity Fair compared the Trudeaus’ garb to Donald Trump’s taste in interior decorating. India’s Outlook magazine said it “was too Indian even for an Indian.”

Trudeau has a history for experimental fashion choices. He is known for sporting themed or colorful socks in what some call “sock diplomacy.”

In 2017, he caused a stir when he attended Toronto’s gay pride parade wearing rainbow-colored socks that said “Eid Mubarak” to simultaneously celebrate the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which fell on the same day. At the time, many pointed out that Trudeau’s catchall enthusiasm for liberal causes failed to address their complexity - some Muslim countries are criticized for violently persecuting gay people.

The Trudeaus commissioned top Indian designers for their photo-rich India tour, but in India, critics say, the over-the-top costumes fail to mask the visit’s shallow accomplishments.

“It’s a kind of reverse colonialism to want to mimic the ‘native,‘” political campaign adviser Dilip Cherian wrote on the Print news website.

“But he missed the entire point that statesmanship is less about kurtas, kirpans, and chorus-girl-like line-ups with namaste and more about content, clarity and continuity,” Cherian wrote.

Others praised the Trudeaus’ striking sartorial choices, saying it showed appreciation for India.

Times Now wrote: “The Canadian Prime Minister has been making an effort to show his affection for the country. Hence, it comes as no surprise that on his visit to India, he is making sure that even his wardrobe has a flavour of India.”

Cuckdeau's doing everything he can to bend the knee to the Indian PM Modi and his BJP party. See him and his Canadian entourage here decked out in all orange, the color strongly associated by political connotation with the BJP.

The reason he is sucking up so hard to Modi is that the BJP and the entire Indian government by extension has totally snubbed Trudeau on this state visit due to Trudeau's close political coalition with Sikh separatist supporters and financial backers in Canada. Trudeau has put a lot of these pro-independence Sikh-Canadians into high positions in his government, controversially some with ties to the Sikh assassination of some Indian officials in the '90s, and Modi's hardline pro-Hindu BJP is retaliating by rolling out the poopy brown carpet for Trudeau.

Modi and all his top government officials have refused to meet with Trudeau on this visit. If they are sending out people to meet the Canadian delegation at all, it's junior ministers and their staffers.

It's hilarious that Trudeau is acting like such a fool, but at the same time it's embarrassing that he's representing Canada.
Now I know exactly how Torontonians felt when Rob Ford was their mayor!!!!!!!!!

I feel like there had to have been a moment when Trudeau was in public and saw that most people were wearing "normal" clothes and felt a bit silly.

It's like an American of Scottish ancestry going to Glasgow with a kilt only to find that everyone there is wearing tweed pants and Levi jeans.

When Bollywood is telling you to tone it down, you know you fucked up. The fact he isn't getting any shit for this in Western media is a joke, since if Trump did this they would literally lose their shit.

Although, the next time India sends a delegation to Canada I want the entire group to be dressed like stereotypical Paul Bunyan lumberjacks.

He is mentally ill.
And funny how people on the left think that trump is a buffoon, but this guys behavior is perfectly normal.

Everything Trudeau does reeks of trying way too hard to fit in with the "muh diversity" crowd, and funny enough the shit he does can backfire on him. In the thread I linked, what he did could be considered "muh mansplaining." And in this thread, the shit he's doing could be considered "muh cultural appropriation."

You know if he's gonna wear shit that doesn't fit him at all in order to fill ridiculous diversity quotas, we need to get this jackass in a full-blown dress before his time as prime minister is over. Whoever gets him in a dress gets a drink on me.

Drag Trudeau when?

I was talking with a friend about this doofus after seeing these the other day, and we agree it's like he's not a real person. Like he's a character in some absurdist comedy and the rest of the world just isn't in on the joke.

Say what you want about Rob Ford, but even at his crack-smoking worst, he was 100% better at everything than Trudeau (especially doing drugs, lol).

I feel embarrassed to be Canadian. Trudeau commissioned India's top designers to make their outfits too.
Michelle Obama had a better outfit. She commissioned a western style dress that was with indian fabric.

India's top designers HAD to have been trolling Trudeau, then, because one of Justin Trudeau's cosplay costumes was Hindu wedding garb.

It's like one of those old sitcoms where people try to relate to foreign guests by dressing like them and it always looks absolutely ridiculous. But here Trudeau is doing it on Indian home soil. He's taking "when in Rome" a little too far.

I'm surprised there's no REEEEEing about cultural appropriation. SJWs should be livid that he dared to make a spectacle of traditional garb.
