I don't care if anyone involved the sad altercation you have mentioned was of any political shade, punching someone simply for what they believe is an act of violence against someone's freedom to express themselves, and simply because they might be a Nazi (literal or not) is not enough reason to hurt them. Same goes for someone who opposes Nazis.

If either actually goes to the point of committing an act of violence, the attacked party has the right of self defense, but no more than that.

Otherwise, it's an unjustified attack on someone simply for the opinions they hold, noxious or noble as they may be, and that is first step on the road to actual fascism, no matter what you profess to believe.

And violence is never a first resort to a dispute of ideology, and if you can only defend what you believe by physically harming people, what you believe is so weak as an argument it cannot stand up to the light of reason to begin with, and that goes for every belief of any type.
