Yeah the PCOS facial hair was the biggest "this is a hamplanet of a woman" sign for me. I know some tub-tubs are so fat they become androgynous but I never see any hamplanet man with a beard like that, even if they have literal neckbeards.

Fun fact! It shouldn’t be convincing! When women grow facial hair - whether due to congenital conditions, endocrine disturbances (like PCOS or Cushing’s syndrome), or exogenous androgens (aka “HRT”), it can differ noticeably from typical male facial hair. These differences are due to a combination of hormonal levels, hair follicle sensitivity, and developmental timing.

For example, testosterone and DHT (dihydrotestosterone) are the primary drivers of male facial hair development. Men typically have much higher levels of these hormones, especially during and after puberty. Women who develop facial hair often do so due to abnormally high androgens, but these levels are still usually lower than in males. The end result is that women’s facial hair is often finer, patchier, and slower-growing than men's, though this varies with the cause and severity of hormonal imbalance.

Even if their androgen levels were the same, they may not metabolize those hormones in the same way. Our cells respond to external stimuli by printing out the appropriate proteins. The instructions for these proteins are in our chromosomes (and thus, our DNA). So even if a pooner injects male-appropriate quantities of testosterone into themselves, their cells won’t respond like a man’s because they’re not a man’s. Things like limited estrogen production can lead to previously bare-faced women growing little old lady moustaches in their 60s. The hair follicles may not have been "primed" by puberty to grow dense hair, so even with masculinizing hormonal stimulation, the response can be incomplete. The hair grows, but the growth is separated from what are concomitant changes in the hair follicles and skin for males.

I should add that not all bearded ladies throughout history had the same condition, or same increase in androgen production. Many famous bearded women (e.g., Julia Pastrana) had congenital conditions like hypertrichosis, which is not hormonally driven and can produce hair growth patterns different from androgenic beards. Regardless of the specific cause, hair growth for bearded women is usually much slower than their male counterparts.
