Makes me appreciate the Takara shows just that much more because characters there are legitimately distinct and entertaining to see
I mean g1 characters were distinct but also the UT takara shows were meant to be a modernized reboot of g1. There's no real way of escaping g1 unless you remove everything that makes transformers transformers. G1 having the name it does is because of g2 which I always found really funny due tot he fact g2 was a continuation of g1 and since they didn't do a show for g2. g2's"tv show" was literally just g1 reruns with cgi ad break animations.

I think the main problem with recent transformers is every time they reboot it the last near decade it's either pre-war or post-war "g1" in a way that can't make sense if they all coexist and tie into g1. Even stuff like the recent youtube series on hasbro and takara's end that take place some vague point in g1 are similar with the conflicting lore shit where it's clearly a reboot but we don't see the beginning or end, just the middle and it's framed like it's part of g1 because they kinda look like and act like the g1 guys but sky byte is there for some unexplained reason and just looks like his RiD original design with no alterations and scorponok is there but he acts like a scorpion grimlock instead of the manipulative bastard seeking to usurp megatron/galvatron. I'm fine with characters having different personalities from their OG incarnation but it's weird when it's supposed to be part of g1 somehow. Like in energon scorponok was more of a deeply loyal to a fault guy than a shady bastard in terms of relations with galvatron which was an interesting character, but once again that was part of the reboot series armada started and not the original g1. Energon's a sequel that's notoriously got a lot of issues but it's still got interesting shit in it like a lot of these shows tend to have.

Do a proper reboot with a proper start middle and end, that's literally all you need to hook people of any age lmao. it'll be g1 but even bayformers is g1 to some extent not counting the bug alien factor.

EDIT TO AVOID DOUBLE POST: I now have all 3 of the legacy armada powerlinx repaints thanks to a strange and miraculous fluke scenario I will not go into. Two of the three of these being locked to event exclusivity is never not going to bug me. Finding a figure that both got fucked by exclusvity and people scalping since release at over 100 for 30-something really is something else man.

Update since I cot a ping in here while working on some other stuff.

My used Sideways came today-ish (technically yesterday or a few days back, complicated story.)

I forgot how dynamic this little guy was even with his limited articulation. Spring on it seems a bit fucky and easily triggered compared to my original one from back when I was a kid (that I covered in my earlier post I still have but thought I lost for a bit) and the minicon's balljoints are freaky loose. Whatever kid had this one heavily played with the minicon going by that. It can still hold a stance as horns somehow but it's really floppy and if I so much as breathe on it wrong it's going at an angle and the head's slightly popping out. I need to dust him off sometime, because while he's pretty clean there's like a bit of some weird yellowy dust on the back where some hinges are and then some white dust in between his legs and under his bike mode's front end above the wheel. It's very odd dust placement but I'm guessing it was in some kind of open bin partly transformed at some point which is why it's got a bit of dust on all sides of it but in weird spots you wouldn't think dust should gather.

Still hard to believe this thing's over 20 years old. There's a specific "modern" quality to the figures from back then that while newer figures still have aesthetically lack in stability. it's hard to explain what I mean in detail right now but the unfortunate lack of articulation in the knees and some other parts of the main robot aside it's a more "modern" figure than the modern figures. You kind of see a weird similar effect with the old earliest lego Bionicle sets where they just still look the same as they did when they came out if they weren't put through a meat grinder or something. Actually maybe that's why I can handle the OG figure's articulation issues, he's pretty much got the poseability of a BIONICLE toa set from the first 3 years of the series, and weirdly came out around that timeframe too.

I found my USB stick I use to transfer camera photos to my computer finally, it fell between some boxes in a really weird spot and I have no clue how the fuck it got there. Fucking machine elves man. I'll take some photos eventually. Anyways yeah sideways, better than the remake, glad to have another one of him.

Also very obvious but do not buy the used takara ones people want over 500 dollars for on ebay. hell don't buy any used transformer for over 100 dollars unless it's like a titan that was already 100 dollars I guess but even then fuck man people are getting scary with these prices.

Speaking of used modern figures, I have no clue where my used super mode starscream is. should probably check tracking to see if it's even moved a significant distance yet.
EDIT: WHY IS HE IN FUCKING CALIFORNIA? GO BACK. EASTWARD! KILL!

that megatron is tempting and at least will make the price of the other megs drop a bit.

finally having that prime as a leader is also cool, but holy shit that hole in both his grills is turning me off.

I think it says something when the only non-battle damaged versions of the figure are ridiculously upmarked for what they are and the one ok-ish priced one is an exclusive that will likely be scalped out the gate.

The megatron one seems like at some point it was intended to be swappable parts like the MP has but split into two releases because fuck you. Found one non-scalper used listing for ss86 normal megs and missed it because no money at the time and by now it's likely relisted at 100 or some BS. Hate these prices man for both MSRP being 60-70 dollars and internet prices being over 100 it ain't worth it.

I will say this about Kiss Players: the concept of powering up a Cybertronian with a kiss from a lady (human or Cybertroniann) is something I could see a younger me do if she got into TF back then. True love's kiss type stuff. Other than that, I get why there's flack on it but I'll take it over ES shit. At least KP's art style is visually fine.

God I'm fighting the urge to not splurge on another Gear Factory/APC Prime figure. Would kill for them to do Bee already.

Kiss Players feels like something hormonal girls would like and self insert into, but that's just my interpretation.

Quoting some shit from the OTHER thread that got made before this thread got noticed here
And never dies. All hail the immortal Waspinator.
This reminded me of some shit before I realized I was mixing up lore of 2 different cone headed transformers that don't show up frequently. I was gonna go "oh he gets mindfucked and renamed thrust for a bit int he kinda messy sequel to beast wars which kinda lines up with thrust in g1" but then I remembered NO! THAT WAS RAMJET! See, a while back I got reminded of some shit I forgot about transformers skillsets likely because this rarely if ever shows up in anything but Ramjet's "special ability" is he's borderline unkillable to the point he ends up deluding himself that he's invincible which results in injury.

This rarely shows up anywhere he does by the way, he's usually relegated to "guy who's there to provide extra dialogue or fill a crowd".

Sorry i can't find a scan of his bio so the crusty ebay listings will have to do

He fucking rams into and impales his enemies head on. Allies too, he's in it for the love of the game. By the way this isn't relegated to just g1 nearly every bio he has covers this. Ramjet could cause several 9/11s and survive with minor injuries. USE THIS NIGGA MORE LIKE HIS BIO YOU HACKS.

EDIT: I found the classics version of his Bio and it's even better in some aspects, albeit missing the "the skies are my castle" comment.

Some of the best characterization for certain Transformers hilariously enough originates from throwaway synopsis and had they actually considered implementing those aspects for characters in new Transformers media, it would make stuff infinitely more interesting, such as the anti-matter manipulation for Megatron (yes i know IDW had it but i found the execution kinda lame) and Soundwave being a spy. While i'm at it, give him the ability to shift his appearance and potent sound control so he can disorientate the vision and hearing of Autobots to make infiltration as a spy even easier. There's a lot of good ideas here, but Hasbro won't do shit

There was a lot of good stuff in Budiansky's bios that never got used in the cartoon or in Budiansky's own comics. They just didn't have the proper time in the comics. They had only 12 issues per year to highlight that year's toyline. Hardly anyone got enough screen time. Optimus is dead by issue 24, and he spent several of those previous issues as a disembodied head.

I find it really funny looking over the filecard for thrust matches up with how he acts in Armada

...

I forgot about how he's introduced as a mysterious coolguy but overtime gets kinda unraveled as a piece of shit coward that constantly won't shut the fuck up somehow.
Can't find the english clip of the scene so you'll have to read subtitles.

Looking at clips again I am once again reminded how out of wack character scaling is in Armada from shot to shot even in the JP version that fixed some unfinished animation.

Ough, liege maximo 100% should have been a titan instead of prime, it looks weird seeing how shrunk down he is. The back of his helmet being his back and his little breather mouth thing gettign squished down into like an angler fish mouth is gonna take some getting used to. Similar feeling to the takara exclusive armada thrust back in combiner wars where his cone is partly behind his head and his mask face is replaced with a normal mouth that has his mask under it as a chin.

Nexus prime is weird because he's colored like his original appearance but seems to lack his vehicle arms and legs.

Love Liege, but Nexus is extremely underwhelming.
They both look like decent figures, but nexus is 42 fucking dollars for a really lazy deluxe that conflicts with what his preview image was in the statues showcasing off the 13 prime figures.

Also even if he's not a titan at least Liege Maximo's actually going to be beefy in height.

Kinda glad that I can't get the ss86 megatron and prime because everything scales still with the siege-ER style stuff better still still it seems, weirdly including the post 86 prime and megatron ss86 figures. Not that I don't like them or would want them I guess it just makes me appreciate what I got more.

In other news the armada starscream stopped pinging around california for no apparent reason and rapidly shot back across the country to my house. Should have brought that up because I realized I posted about that when he inexplicably went into and got stuck in fucking california.

EDIT: Saw a few people pointing this out in several places talking about these new figures that Liege Maximo's more funky bits might be because he's a pretool for a transformers crossovers death's head or something.

I can actually kind of see it. Especially with the fact he comes with a big techy gun instead of his arm buster hand-cannon he's usually depicted with.
