Donor blood gets screened but accidents still happen. Plenty of people ended up sick from tainted blood. Also, blood donation services really prefer people not to donate HIV positive blood since they only test the bulk of many individual donations, rather than every sample individually. One HIV+ donation can ruin many donations it got mixed with.
The worst part is that even most fags admit they're a danger that probably shouldn't donate blood. It's just allies and professional activists that pushed this. And even then, they could only get it accepted with the caveat that they had no gay sex for 12 months.

Due to work, friends-through-friends, and networking, I’ve had the experience of knowing and being friends with a number a gay guys in my lifetime. All from different walks of life. Some fruitier, others more straight-acting. All were very successful with a diverse range of careers. One was extraordinarily wealthy. Most thought #PRIDE was dumb as fuck and wouldn’t be caught dead at a parade. No ill will towards any of them- they never acted gross or tried to hit on me. Very respectful of boundaries. I still regard most of them very highly.
