I work with a lot of female inmates due to the nature of my job. Most of them have never known stability, affection without transaction, love unconnected to drugs, any sort of non-abusive and healthy relationship, and come from completely shattered homes and communities. A lot are in on assault or drug charges. Almost every single one has been raped at least once--most multiple times, for years. I've had some tell me that prison is the safest place for them, because they're not hooking or getting passed around at a gang house. One thing with this approach I have noticed is that there are people who seem to think that the women did something to end up in the clink so “tough shit”.
Usually the same kind of people who think that male on male prison rape serves a correctional purpose.
While I do confess to enjoying prison rape based humor in the right context, this isn’t the right context.
Women in prison more commonly have been victims of abuse by men, so putting them in prison with men in dresses is just reinforcing to many that they deserve to be around abusive sex pests.
People make mistakes, maybe there are people who the system have it out for, but surely a civilized society should be making attempts at correcting the path for those who made mistakes.
The oft quoted “A society can be judged on how it treats its most vulnerable” is very relevant here.
I would argue that many women in prison are among the most vulnerable in society.
Granted a troon would run a risk of sexual abuse from male prisoners in a male prison, but for fucks sake, they can take their fucking dress off and “go stealth” for a few years.
Everyone is in prison for a reason. It's foolish to forget this. It is also cruel--horrifically so--to cage damaged, broken women who are easily victimized with a man. Any man. They do not even allow male guards on the unit unless there's no choice. The power differential is so big that the women are effectively sitting ducks. Never mind the perpetual re-traumatization leading to increased violent behavior and criminality.
Every single person who voted for these policies--every single one--deserves to spend a month naked and chained in the middle of a sex offender unit. That is effectively what they do to these women.
