we didn't use real produce to draw life studies with because they would spoil quickly, so we used Styrofoam apples. Styrofoam apples look the exact same as real apples, but they are lighter and you can't eat them.

Styrofoam has different properties to real apples. Different glossiness, refractive index, translucency, etc. Might be fine if you're drawing with graphite or charcoal but it's too different if you include colors.

Obviously many of my favourite cows are giant slabs of manhood in a cheap dress, and hence easy to clock. For others like Mr Schafer, it’s more subtle. I’m always struck by the minute attention many Farmers have to noses, hands, etc. I just don’t have that eye for detail, or perhaps it’s because there are women who are outliers so the elements don’t really stand out to me. I find very hard to articulate, but something just feels off with the whole package.

I knew of Schafer’s existence, but hadn’t really registered what his face looked like. He has a small, blink and you’ll miss it, role in Kinds of Kindness. In that film, there’s a cult searching for a special woman. Emma Stone’s character is examining a candidate - a lanky, slim blonde who is naked except for underpants. So I am primed to think here is a woman. There are breasts, long hair etc. There certainly are lanky, slim women. Don’t ask me why, but the woman looked off. A quick check of IMDB and sure enough it was Mr Schafer. I still can’t break down which bits are male vs female, and he certainly tries hard, but there’s a primal sense that this is not correct.
