Hey @bugswarm, I think you are kinda misunderstanding my point here. I do agree there is a "boy crying wolf" effect with "pedo" accusations, but the terms "pedophile/pedophilia" in itself kinda encourages this behavior. That's because it is so vague, abstracted away from the actual crime of child sex abuse, but still tainted by it. You can call someone a pedophile without them actually having any proof of them commiting child sexual abuse, any victim with allegations, but you can still imply that have done such a crime and have plausible deniability, because pedophilia means several things as once.

And"Pedophilia" was never intended to describe the act of child sexual abuse, but instead a purported mental illness in the mind of the perpetrator. As such it's rotten to the core by making rape about attraction.

So like one way to combat this is be more specific with your language, and call literal child rapists what they are: child rapists. Like my recommendation for me to take such allegations seriously is basic stuff like: don't make euphemisms about it, don't be vague, be specific, have actual victims and what was done to them at the core, instead of talking about thoughts and feelings in the brain of the supposed perpetrator.

Oh no I agree and understand your point. My point was moreso about how like... so my cousin is in jail for sexually assaulting a 6 year old girl. When I got a text from my family to tell me about it, they didn't say "remember your creepy cousin? Turns out he's a child rapist" they said "remember your creepy cousin? Turns out he's a pedophile and finally got caught". And to a lot of older people who aren't around accusations of pedophilia a lot because they aren't online or politically active, when you say "this person is a pedophile" to them, that means this person has committed crimes against children, that that person has victims. It’s why it’s such an effective accusation against lgbt people. To a lot of people, calling someone a pedophile literally means "child rapist" and not "person attracted to minors in some way". They don't know that the term was a diagnosis. They aren't aware that there are other terms to use that mean anything else.

So with it in mind that there are groups of people who will only call child rapists "pedophiles" and never "child rapists" because they don't have the vocabulary or knowledge, the issue is that people who do know better like you and I, don't always take an accusation seriously. People like us are more likely to ignore an accusation of "pedophilia" as meaning "person i disagree with" or "person who is vaguely attracted to minors but has never harmed one and isn't really at risk of harming one", when its actually someone trying to say "this person assaulted a child" in the only way they know how to.

There are other boy who cried wolf effects that come into play too but one of them is literally that because so many people use the term to mean "person attracted to a minor" (or abuse it to mean "person i don't like"), its more likely that people who are using the term to mean "child rapist" and don't have any other way to articulate themselves can get ignored and actual child rapists can continue on for a lot longer before getting caught.

I see this come up a lot more in fanfiction spaces with regards to the term "child porn" (or "CSEM" or "CSAM") where because so many people report "child porn" (or the other terms) to AO3, its not taken that seriously usually. Its not something that needs to be checked on as soon as possible. Which is how when actual child porn got linked to/embedded one time, we didn't catch it until a day or 2 later when the site it was hosted on had already taken it down and many people found it via the post on AO3. (I was the person who handled that case. Thats how I know for a fact that it happened) Because there isn't another term people can switch to that means "images/videos of real children being sexually abused" because that is literally the legal definition of child porn, and the definition of CSAM. (CSEM technically includes a few other things so that's less egregiously incorrect). People just like to abuse those terms to include anything that involves a minor in a sexual situation, including fictional minors (including fictional teenagers) and in some cases, 'adults who are minors in the show the fic is written about'. Reports of "child porn", which is a legal definition that inherently means the material has actual victims in like 99.9% of cases, aren't taken that seriously in a lot of fandom spaces because the term gets abused so much. Which means people sharing actual child porn get away with it a lot easier for significantly longer.

Technically it is correct: you get some people whose sexual attraction is to children, and who groom / rape kids, and then there are people who rape kids because they like rape and kids are available, but who will rape adults too. But it’s a distinction without a difference - interesting from an academic view, but meaningless in practice because both categories victimise children and can’t be magically cured of their interest in rape.

Wasn't that big of a deal, but I am a stealth trans man and recently moved to a small town. My boss had me go over to relieve a coworker for their break and said "Go to 5, they need a break," and my ass got excited thinking I had a nonbinary coworker. I approached them later after we'd had a quick conversation about a gay customer that came in and was just like "hey what are your pronouns? I heard someone call you they so I just wanted to check." She looked very confused and said "I am a straight lady with lady parts, nothing else going on down there, just a straight lady." Not to stereotype but my girl has a 3-sided undercut and blue hair lol so I assumed she'd at least know what I was asking rather than not actually answering my question and over sharing about her genitals lol.

Thanks for saying that. I'm not UNclockable but my beard and larger frame do a lot of heavy lifting, especially in more conservative areas. I haven't been passing for that long though so I tend to overthink little things like that.

I appreciate your insight to her pov, I hadn't really considered that. She's a bit androgynous in the face so it's possible people mistake her for being transfemme or w/e and she's not 'woke" enough to be chill about that.
