So slab city is actually something I know a bit about so I can comment on this: this is one of the original anarchist communes in the modern US, founded during the war in Vietnam as a place for all sorts of hippies and draft dodgers it became something of a pilgrimage site for a lot of anarchists. Many people who live there have lived there full time for decades and just deal with the temps.

Slab City is an interesting place but not necessarily a particularly welcoming one, nor do I suspect an especially easy place to live. The conditions are brutal, the comforts are few, and most people who consider living so far from the social contract an appealing lifestyle are not going to be particularly interested in decolonizing the gender binary.
