In the southern US, ma’am, sir, etc are used often. Not sure about the rest of burgerland but here you can definitely expect to get a gendered word in your greeting or send off. Or like if you’re trying to get someone’s attention, most people down here will default to, “excuse me sir/ma'am”.
Not to get too off topic, but Islam has many teachings and customs which support, or mandate, the freeing of slaves, and early Islam expanded women's rights. Muhammad's first wife was an independent merchant, successful in her own right. For that matter, Muhammad personally freed all the slaves which he bought or was gifted, and slaves were guaranteed rights of food, shelter, and merciful treatment under Islamic law. Of course people have always fallen short of these laws, but the same has occurred in every civilization throughout history.
Not to mention the possibility that the clerk could be using these words specifically as an act of defiance when they realize they’re speaking to a tranny. Not very likely, admittedly, but it can definitely happen.
The best part is that it’s as effective (if not more) as being outwardly hostile. Using a troon’s preferred pronouns gives them a hit of dopamine and probably turns them on, so I refuse to do that no matter what it takes. Being openly defiant denies them that hit, but it can also fuel their victim complex (“EVIL TRANSPHOBE NAZI KAREN LITERALLY MISGENDERED ME”) and opens up the possibility of retaliation through complaining to your higher-ups. Total neutrality denies them both the pleasures of affirmation and victimhood while also giving you an out just in case they decide to try and ruin your life.

That strikes me as fairly bizarre. To me addressing someone as "sir" is a gesture of submission, if I were told to do so as a courtesy to customers or guests I'd react as negatively as I would if someone expected me to call them "milord". I guess I'm just too much of a freedom-loving communist.
Contrary to what you'd believe of a kiwi farmer, I actually have three tranny friends. I don't indulge them even one bit, and I think that's what makes it work. Even up here near Detroit it's very much the same. Retail workers usually will say, "excuse me ma'am" to get a woman's attention, or "Have a nice day, man!" At the end of an interaction. Even BIGGER gender mentioning offenders are someone I haven't seen mentioned yet... Little old black ladies! They will call every single young woman in their vicinity "Babygirl" "Honey" or "Sugar"

This works in English, but in languages like Russian you basically can't do that. The gender of a subject affects words other than direct pronouns. "She's fat" for example is она жирная, while "he's fat" becomes он жирный. Он and она are he and she, while жир is fat. And because жир takes on the masculine or feminine form when used as an adjective, even if I simply skip the pronoun it'll still be clear who the subject is. This also applies in first and second person. Of course the local culture is such that I can correctly gender troons all day without much risk.
What I always question about "I was misgendered today!" stories is whether anything actually happened. I spent a year in England, and words like "sir" or "madam" or "miss" seemed very uncommon outside formal situations. I was pretty much exclusively addressed as either "you" or just my name. Are they maybe just much more common in the USA?
Yeah no absolutely. I graduated hs in 2006 and it was instilled in me that the yes ma'ams and no sirs were a no contest question. Im on the west coast now, and when i meet new people in my company they are always like "oh you don't have to call me 'sir'". The answer is always "no, i really do. It is my culture, my nature, and my grandmother will roll in her grave if i dont."
