Since you'll never really be able to know which one it is, you might as well assume assume the former to avoid feeling attacked. I think most of the time (depends where you live I guess) it is the former, most people are decent human beings.

The other thing that sucks is the lack of control we have over this issue. We are always going to get stared at, it's just part of being trans. We can at least take back some control by staring back.
