You've probably heard, it's been in all [German] news, that, in Berlin, at the Ahrensfelde train station, a train of the Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn (NEB) burned down completely. Very impressive pictures in all the media.
According to press statements, the conductor in his cabin noticed smoke and immediately evacuated the mere five passengers from the train together with the train attendant, which is why nobody got injured. Of course it would've been grave if they hadn't been standing in a train station in which you could easily get out of the train. When the firefighters arrived, the entire train was burning hard, you see that on the many pictures on which the train isn't just smoking, but the complete inferno was glowing orange throughout the entire train. The firefighters couldn't save anything, but apparently they extinguished the train quite quickly. I don't know how hard it is to extinguish a train, but actually it's not that much material. What is problematic is that modern trains don't have doors between wagons anymore, but are basically a long tube through which you can walk, which means that fire and burning gases can expand without any resistance. If it burns in one place, the entire train is full of smoke and everything is burning quickly.
Well, I thought, it happens on occasion. Short circuiting or something. They did say that it was a diesel-powered carriage, but diesel trucks and omnibuses do have occasional issues and catch fire. It happens every now and then that a bus burns down, and I have personally seen, on the Autobahn, how the trailer of a truck - from the cargo - caught fire and flames were raising from the cover. I've also seen burning vans two or three times, and a large transporter standing there burning on the breakdown lane, showing no signs of an accident. It's not so alien that diesel vehicles can catch fire. It happens. And it wouldn't be the first one. Recently, one burned down.
But now they say: aggravated arson.
The Süddeutsche:
And the Tagesspiegel:
It seems to be a bigger item.
Any relation to one of the three wars? Russia/Ukraine? Palestine/Lebanon/Israel? Republican/Democrat Party? Just left-wingers again? Hooligans? Ransom blackmailers?
It's gonna be fun.

Train arson

The relevant Federal Agency for Train Accident Investigation (BEU) has confiscated the train. In parallel, the federal police has been investigating the cause of the fire and secured comprehensive evidence at the site. The federal police inspection Berlin-Ostbahnhof or every other police office is gathering more hints.
The Süddeutsche:
After the burning of a train of the Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn in the Ahrensfelde train station, the federal police is looking for more witnesses. Passengers who noticed something and didn't report anything yet are asked to do so, the agency said. The investigation is surrounding suspected aggravated arson.
And the Tagesspiegel:
[emphasis added by Danisch]On Monday, the arson department of the State Office of Criminal Investigation (LKA) joined the investigation. The train has also been examined by the Federal Agency for Train Accident Investigations (BEU). [...]
Because the train is considered a piece of evidence, it is being kept under constant watch by the federal police and employees of Deutsche Bahn security.
It seems to be a bigger item.
