This shit is on par with the One Direction fandom freaking and losing their collective shit over Larry (the ship name of two of the members) all the fucking time.
As a fan of the books this makes me feel so ashamed to see that this is what people will associate with Sherlock.

I think any fandom of people who can look at Benedict Cumberbatch for more then 5 seconds without feeling mildly nauseous is probably going to be at least a little bit deluded.
Inb4 :alog:

Hey now, to Cumberbatch's credit, he actually looked remotely human when he grew out a beard/goatee for Doctor Strange.

Never understood these people. They've been doing it in fanzines since Kirk/Spock, and it hasn't gotten any better. It reminds me of those tumblr users who flipped out after Harry Potter and the Cursed Child came out, because of some rumor that Malfoy's kid and Potter's kid were gay for each other. Naturally, the rumor was untrue, but you still saw shippers writing essays about how perfect those two would be for each other, and how they cried themselves to sleep when they saw it didn't happen.

Totally. This sort of behavior is nothing new at all: Kirk/Spock, Starsky/Hutch, Blake/Avon, and the two guys from the Professionals? The moonbat shippers were all over that shit back in the day by way of fanzines. The only buddy cop/sci-fi-esque show of the 70/80's era that didn't get a huge slash following was Miami Vice, for reasons that should be obvious when you see the two main characters, but that's beside the point.

The batshit of those delusional, 100+ page meta writing shippers who have their tinfoil hats on tight enough to cut off circulation to their brains, only got magnified even more because the internet gave these crazies a platform to have their voices heard. TJLC just has the added exceptional element of Tumblr culture attached to it, which makes it all the more fascinating and blood boiling to watch.

And then the furniture clapped.

That end table grew up to be Adolf Hitler

I hope Sherlock Season 5 features Sherlock having sex with Irene Adler so Johnlock fans shriek and cry.

Even better if it featured a villain called The Shipper. It'll be a sinister looking person in a black robe who will kidnap Sherlock and Watson, then force them to make out. After several attempts end in failure, the boys are rescued by their female significant others, and they unmask The Shipper to reveal a whiny 15 year old girl. Then they tie her up and make her watch as the guys fuck their ladies, until she passes out from the screaming and crying.

Even wikipedia thinks they're full of it.

Someone with real writing talent and who knows the show well enough should go and write a 10-chapter long fanfic to appease this community. It should be really well written, heavily homoerotic and directly targeted at them (in an introductory dedication or something). After reading the first chapter or two they'll all be resharing it like crazy.

Of course it only queerbaits both characters and ends up on the same note as the series.

Weenery? Sure 10 chapters take some time to write but just knowing a ton of people would read the whole thing and massively reeeeee at the end would be well worth it. Guaranteed 80% chance of sending those I almost cut myself for this kids over the edge.

I just finished sherlock season 1 yesterday and this is the most retarded shit ever. The tweens can 'ship' their 'ships' but there are secrets by the writers left for them to find? lol :story:

This is actually a really great idea.

This is the most Tumblr thing I have ever read.

Tumblr in Meltdown After ‘Sherlock’ Season Ended With No Gay Kiss

About the only thing I hadn't read in this thread was that people actually are now using Conan Doyle's short stories as "evidence."
What's funny here is the person claiming to do the literary anylysis (with the photos of the book sentences themselves) fails to use the single most important thing they teach you to do in English class (from Highschool all the way up through college). LOOK AT THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT.

Seriously - back then, saying that people knew each other intimately didn't mean they fucked each other's butts. It meant they were best friends. Historical context is the foundation of understanding literature written in the past. If you can't grasp the context, there's no hope of even understanding what the entire bloody thing is even about.

Well that depends. They certainly used codes to refer to more intimate acts. The phrase "talk about Plato" was a usual euphemism for homo sex.

Yes, they did. However the specific line the person is citing is contextually innocent. Knowing the period codes, like your example "talk about Plato" is one thing. I meant more along the lines of people makind assumptions based on modern ideas and understanding rather than how it would have been commonly understood to people reading it for the first time in the time period it was produced. "Hey, because we assume in today's modern year that A means Z, back in the good old year of 189X that had to mean the same exact thing as it does in current year."

Again, "talk about Plato" to most modern people literally means "let's talk about that one history guy Plato and that Republic thing he wrote" while back then it meant, as you said, gay buttsex. Language evolves, but literature is a sort of time capsule for language and concepts. I said before that Conan Doyle himself "queerbaited" but much of what's actually cited by most people is historically inaccurate, and is only "queerbating" using the modern understanding of the terms rather than actually trying to find out what the period specific "codes" were and looking for those.

edit: hit post before i finished typing.

They certainly used codes to refer to more intimate acts.

I'm guessing you've never read a single Arthur Conan Doyle book in your life? Spoiler alert: Sherlock Holmes novels are not heavy with sexual innuendo. Even less homo innuendo.

I want to see a cage match of 2012's 'My teacher ships Johnlock and gave me an A on my essay about BBC Sherlock!!' tumblr fandom vs 2017's 'Johnlock isn't canon which is extremely problematic and the BBC hates gays!' tumblr fandom. Fight!
