There were less lethal options they should have pursued, since they had time to do so. But no, you always shoot at the thing you're most likely to hit, because stray bullets kill innocent people.

It's cyclical, the last big push for that was in the late 60's/early 70's when the hippie movement fell apart, and the pop-psych social engineers went hard on how the Free Love movement didn't bring us utopia, but never fear! In short, no, no, no, no A MILLION FUCKING TIMES NO>

You cannot shoot someone in the arm "Just to stop them" in real life.

- FIrst of all, if you are shooting, then lethal force is, by definition, justified. If it's justified, you shoot to KILL not WOUND.

- Trying for an extremity instead of centermass means you probably will miss and hit a bystander, look how many shots miss even in a "regular" shooting between LEOs and suspects.

- There is no "safe" place to shoot a human being. Not even a seeming non-vital extremity like an arm. "Hey, uh, sorry that bullet glanced off your shoulder blade, corkscrewed into your torso, ripped across your aorta and then lodged in your lung, I was only trying to wound you so you'd drop the knife, I wasn't TRYING to make you drown in your own blood like that"

the problem is that Police cant use less force because people would scream police brutality if they just hit her with strong pepperspray or one of those police maces.
also US Police isnt well protected. they could be hurt by that tiny knife. European Police is normaly alot more protected and better trained and can knock out a tiny maniac without useing potentialy deadly force.

at that point it was a threat, but not when the cops arrived. get the people from the street, talk to the person, just shot when they try to come for you.

A bean bag to the face and a quick go for the person and knife would be enough.

officers serve the people, they are supposed to take risks, thats why they get so many benefits.
the lawsuit will come anyway and its way better to just hurt the person an little and not kill them.
