Is it exceptionally difficult to sculpt for the 3D printing? Using material cost alone isn't a great metric, you'd want to add time to design and paint as well, but if it's printed the design time should be distributed by number of expected sales to reduce price and increase interest.99% of the time they are 3d printed in resin and hand painted. The most laborious part of the process is the 3d modeling. If it's 28mm scale, then there's probably $2-$5 of materials involved depending on the quality of the resin used.
I have no idea if hand painting makes the price worth it, but I think the dude would really benefit from having someone sit down and flesh out whatever business model he has in mind before Tim blindly gives them a promotion like that, as right now it just makes the dude look bad when it could have easily been a huge win for him due to Tim's audience size. I will say it's nice of Tim to promote random people, but execution needs work.
