Sort of, but you're missing the proximate cause. It's like saying "the plane crashed because it hit the ground"--technically true, but not really what's interesting.

The real causes are that everyone started running around with the internet in their pocket AND everyone had access to a 24/7, hi-res, portable camera.

Before, if you wanted to use the internet, you had to sit down at a computer like a nerd. You think attractive, marginally-retarded women are going to sit down at their computer all day? Fuck no. The only people who spent large enough amounts of time on the internet to actually soak in its culture prior to the introduction of Steve Jobs' original iCancer announcement were nerds, mostly young, white men with a minimum intelligence of 100 (and boomer conspiracy tards with a significantly lower IQ, but that's another story).

Remember, there were no apps--if you wanted to know about some new platform, you either heard about it from your buddies or you looked it up on your favourite legacy tech news site. Then, if you wanted to interact with internet subculture, you had to actually sit there and explore. Normal people did this for maybe an hour or two a day, after school or work--visit ebaumsworld, maybe check if there's any new IGN reviews, fuck with your fantasy football team, talk on AIM (ICQ, then MSN Messenger in my case--AIM wasn't a thing in Canada). Then you were done and you called up your buddies to hang out with.

That all changed when the average person--who has a significantly lower IQ than 100--got ahold of 24/7 internet access in their pocket and access to social media services so simple to use a monkey could do it (and continue to do, if World Star is any indication). Women realized they could take pictures of themselves and their friends and compete with one another via Facebook. They realized they could talk shit about the girls they don't like. They realized they could obtain genuine fame with the internet if they played their cards right. They had game-ified nonsense like Farmville that the old internet crowd would have never fallen for.

Those are the people who ran smack-dab into the existing internet culture of the time, and they did not like it one bit. Turned out, the internet was mean and people were saying shit on it that they'd never say in real life. The news started doing stories about cyberbullying and shit, occasionally some 13 year old lolcow would off herself because 'muh bullying'. Then, with all the highly gullible average people on the internet, the corporations moved in. The old internet gang was pretty resistant to advertising; I think banner ads had like a 0.001% click-through rate or something. But banner ads were out, highly deceptive native advertising was in. You had a whole new group you could exploit and they were significantly easier to part with their money than the old group. You know what corporations don't like? Controversy and people entering soft-drink naming contests, voting for things like "Hitler did nothing wrong" and "Gushing Granny":

So naturally, they did what big business always does when they don't get their way and teamed up with society-destroying non-profits to make the internet as sanitized as possible. That's not to say there's no genuine believers in 'no platform for hate' or whatever excuse they're using these days, but it never would have happened if these platforms were more concerned about their users than about advertising dollars.

Anyway, I'm sure there's a more cogent argument for this thesis, but smartphones, cameras and social media is when I remember it all changing...and now we have 400 pound fat people dancing to music written by thrice-jailed criminals, and it's not even done ironically. To say I miss the old days is an understatement...

I like where your going with this but im not sure about the exact instigator of the transition. You mentioned that it had alot to do with low iq normies getting on the internet which i can agree with but the true social media, focused grouped, pander fest didn't really start untill the mid 2000's. There was an interesting period between say 1996 ish and 2004 as the access speed of the network itself began to expand that allowed for a more layman friendly and speedy means of internet navigation. Home pc's were also becoming more common at that time with an explosion in retail options for prebuilt pc's. Some combination of early blogging, music sharing, and early multiplayer gaming started pulling a wide swath of teens deeper into the internet.

These youth didn't necessarily need or want a sanitized internet the corporate machine more or less just followed the money. I actually remember this period of the net fondly.

The truth of the matter is that you will never really be able to take the shitlord out of the pipes. The internet is a redundant communications network and while trying to silence a person has become easier; trying to silence ideas and their related style of communication isn't really ever going to work. Sites that really allow that kind of content will always be smaller and more nimble to navigate around those that try to pull them off the network while their userbase and those that think like them will continue in perpetuity to make strafing runs at the white towers and high walls of the normi-net.
