What's the point of this? At least pico-8 had colour (And was a shared specification you could run anywhere despite being a supposedly 8-bit "console" that's more powerful than the GBA in some respects).

The fishing rod is probably a reference to all the Dreamcast games that snuck in support for the fishing controller. Games they've never played. Soy game devs love referencing Dreamcast games they've never played. See: All the HASSY in Read Only Memories

I hope that by "black and white" they mean shaded black and white instead of mono, also no mention of the soundchip OR ANY SORT OF HOMEBREW. THIS IS VERY BAD.

Also in other news I'm still pissed off that the soy gaming sphere recruited Keita Takahashi he actually makes good games.
oh wait you mean the dreamcast VMU type games?

The VMUs used a similar screen and they were just total ass.

That reminds me I just unearthed a copy of Elemental Gimmick Gear, no case but the disc was in better condition than my original copy. FYE was selling it used so no idea how long it sat there in the yellowed clear plastic disc sleeve.

As a diehard brick gameboy fan this physically hurts to look at and I want it to burn. The fucking thing doesn't even slope the buttons diagonally to accommodate thumb reach.

Predicting that one of the 12 games heavily involves a jack-in-the-box and results in the worst reaction videos the planet has ever seen.

No idea what the actual games will be like but Teenage Engineering make overpriced but decent music making devices and they’ve got a hipster following so it’ll probably sell alright since they seem to know their market, they’re the kind of consumer that’ll believe having no backlight is actually a great, innovative feature if they get told it is.

The actual reason they give for having no backlight:
Is there a backlight?

No! Wild, right? In daylight, the reflective layer makes it look spectacular. At night, you can sit by a reading lamp and bask in how incredibly beautiful a modern, sharp, highly-reflective black-and-white LCD can look. It’s great.

Here’s a picture of one of the games:

>Again, there’s no backlight so playing in the dark will require a lamp – just like the good old days.

When am I ever going to have time to play then when I already have a huge backlog of fun things I want to do, like hand-churn butter, collect the chicken eggs, feed the cows their gruel, and other fun throwbacks to the past.

-- Sent from my IBM 5150 running Arache over dial-up -- this post took about 3 hours of editing raw JS/HTML and sending over a 25 baud modem. What a fun throwback!

There was an actual fishing rod controller for the DC port of that stupid normie bass fishing game that all the walmarts had in front back then. I think it ran on the Naomi board.

Thanks for that, it restores my faith in humanity. Those little TE dweebs will slobber over something that sounds cheaper than the "fasten seatbelt" chime on a ford taurus. The OP-1 is obtuse and borderline unusable garbage for what.... $1400 now? I regret giving them my shekels.
12 seconds of sample time in current year, get fucked.

Soul Cal could use it too

Those of us who actually played the old games aren't nostalgic for no-backlight systems. They sucked, even when the gameplay was great. We all appreciate the backlight plus a brightness dial. You can't give us old tech we know from experience was inferior, unless you make it dirt cheap.

On almost the same day as this announcement, old school game enthusiasts were modding backlights into those old screens.

Not Gonna lie, I wouldn't mind buying something like this, if it was made properly.
But for $150? Really!?
The Playdate has a non-backlit, black and white screen, a directional pad, A and B buttons, and a rotatable crank that can be used by games for – things.
Not to mention the crank makes the whole thing look retarded and it's called a fucking "Playdate"!?

Or you could pay $20-$80 and get a second hand DS and a bunch of games on eBay.

Or you could pay $120-$160 and get a (new and boxed) Samsung Galaxy S4, which'll also flog this thing.

Black and white screen in this day and age, bah. Goddamn crank, get outta here with that crap.

Also no backlight so these faggots can emulate ~*THE FEEL*~ of the fucking OG gameboy.

OG gameboy was a fucking brick which this piece of shit isn't so it can't even get the physical feeling emulated right. Now you say "but what about the Gameboy pocket??? It was more popular because it was the gameboy model that appeared when pokemon did?" the Gameboy pocket didn't have a gay fucking little handle.

Dollars to Chinese Buffet Donuts that this piece of shit is rebranded from something that already exists just like SouljaWatch, we just have not stumbled across it yet on Aliexpress.
I meant to bring this up a few hours ago, but aren’t gameboys more or less the single most durable piece of consumer tech ever behind that one Nokia? I can go to my local arcade, buy one, run it over, and it’ll probably be none the worse for wear. If you want to emulate the feel, just buy one and some games, or get one of the shitty emulators at gamestop or your online sweatshop of choice if you just want utility.
