Actively avoiding depressing stories because it makes you experience feelings you dont like is a sign of immaturity and mental illness.

"Toxic positivity" is a team i have been seeing alot lately with people doing everything in their power to avoid anything that makes them sad or uncomfortable, to avoid having to experience any negative emotions that may give them a greater insight not just about the world but themselves.

They not only hurting themselves, but others around them to deny the reality of the situation. You need to experience both facades of life to truly feel fulfilled.

Stop taking SSRI.

Or maybe a lot of people experience depressing stories all the time IRL and they don't want that in their entertainment?

Why would I want to read depressing stories when I can look out my window and see far worse?

I would argue there needs to be balance when writing a story. You cant have one without the other (well, you can but that would cheapen the experience)

How else are you gonna feel fulfilled consuming slob the validates you at every turn?

Theres tragedy and there is misery porn. Most things in tv and movies are the latter. Not all of it obviously. Scrubs and breaking bad are probably the best examples of doing tragedy well.

I think the last of us 2 is a good example of "misery porn". Nothing was earned nor gained. Ellie never got her revenge and destroyed her own life in the process.

But it could have worked better as a revenge story if Ellie killed Abby. Even after getting her revenge, she destroyed herself in the process and lost the last person who really mattered to her. A tale not to be blinded by petty revenge and focus on what really matters.

Druckmen really fucked up telling that story.

Im not exactly sure what a depending story is. But i can tell you i explicitly avoid movies that try to squeeze a tear out of you. Because i feel like im being manipulater into it. Im not saying that storycant have a sad moment, i love scrubs and it made me teary all the time, but when an entire purpose of the story to make you sad... Why should i engage with it?

It depends. Before telling your depressing story, ask yourself:
Do the people you're telling stand to gain/learn anything from knowing your story?
Is anyone present both willing and able to help you with your situation?

If the answer to both of those questions is "no," then you telling the story is a mastubatory cry for sympathy. Tell it to your therapist.

If the entire marketing for the film is "to make you feel sad", then it loses its purpose because you know what to expect. if a comedy film market itself as "to make you laugh" but still have depressing moments, can make the movie a better experience overall.

This reminds me of college, specifically how all the kids watching/listening/reading to depressing 3deep4you shit were always the rich trust fund assholes who literally had nothing to worry about, no matter what happened they could only fail upwards, they didn't have to work a day in their lives if they didn't want. From cradle to the grave they would always have enough money to at least live like an upper middle class person without ever having to do anything they didn't want to.

The rest of us we were too busy dealing with economic meltdowns, forever wars, and shitty jobs to also deal with even more depressing shit.

I hope you not implying im a trust fund nepo baby because i wegie like everyone else.

Was there actually anyone saying there was?

For me, I think a balance is the right call. Overabundance of misery or happiness (Or more accurately, comfortness) isn't good for anybody. Though, I'd much rather perfer more happy shit, considering what the world is currently.

I don't have a problem with depressing stuff, I'm English, we love that. At least that's what my mother said once after some depressing movie about this former gangster who keeps tries to reform, tries to rebuild his relationship with his daughter and keep his family pub running, but he has a drug addict brother who blows all of their fortunes and gets involved in some shady shit, which makes the former gangster have to get back into the life and run drugs for a gang, then right after saying goodbye to his daughter, he gets gunned down in the street by her boyfriend who he'd previously beat up for treating her badly. Some of this is me filling in the blanks, I saw bits and pieces of the film when I walked in and out. The exact quote she said was "You can tell it's English because it's depressing."

A story doesn't need to be depressing for that.
You can have conflict and struggle and still have a generally upbeat vibe to it.
I think that the more satisfying thing is us seeing the hero figure things out and overcome his struggles, rather than seeing him get depressed and have a therapy session.

People hate to hear anything negative, if you're not a bundle of sunshine you're not going to be very popular. Same for movies, that's why they almost always have a happy ending.
