[Linda's stomach is bubbling violently now. After some dramatic music builds up suspense, a tiny squeak is heard. Linda turns red as the whole class gasps. We hear Ms. Kathy laughing uncontrollably in the background, and then soon all the other adults follow suit. Linda tries to laugh off the fart but is clearly embarrassed. Ms. Kathy walks to Linda, takes her by the hand, and leads her out into the hallway as the laughter dies down.]

Let’s go down the list.

  • Goofy (Goof Troop): Kind of fitting, I guess.
  • Mr. Turner (Fairly OddParents): He’s lucky that he’s a non-presence in the show because as the series went on Timmy’s parents just became absolutely horrible. He’s an idiot on top of being horrible.
  • Dick Daring (The Replacements): Getting old here.
  • Billy’s Dad (Billy & Mandy): Oh yeah, a discount version of Billy. The show really needed that.
  • Richard (Gumball): Deterred me from the show for awhile. I like the show now, but using this cliche almost single-handedly killed its chances with me.
  • Hal (Malcolm in the middle): Why the fuck did you marry Lois? Who would do such a thing? Are you suicidal? Are you a masochist? Like the most masochistic person in the world? The second Lois gets angry and any sane, rational person would know to cut her permanently out of your life. And you married her.
  • Hank Hill (King of the Hill): With Peggy as his wife, the cliche is almost invisible here.
  • Dr. Doofemnsmurtz (Phineas and Ferb): It almost feels that the showrunners thought that because he was an idiot, they needed to give him a kid, honestly.
  • Recette’s father (Recettear): Literally the only thing that stops it from being my favorite video game of all time.
  • Tim Taylor: (Home Improvement) My favorite example of this trope because they literally devoted an episode to Jill having a mental crisis because she was wrong about something and Tim was right about something. Also, idiots and power tools don’t mix.
  • Raymond (Everyone Loves Raymond): They flanderized a character to employ one of the most overused tropes in history.
  • Glenn Martin (Glenn Martin DDS): He’s not only an idiot, but he’s a selfish idiot. What makes this character type tolerable to most is that they’re at least well-meaning, but take it to Glenn Martin to fuck up a cliche once again.
Do I need to go on? The only time an “idiot father” character in a television series can even hope to break even is if they started out as competent and their idiocy was only a result of flanderization (Homer Simpson). This list alone should show how over-used it is. For every sitcom father you could name that isn’t a complete moron, I could name you five or more that are. It’s annoying at best, and at worst it completely destroys any plausibility the show had or if you wanna go the unfortunate implication route…
 
Stinker: Competition, silly! The town's annual tournament to see who can cut the cheese better than all the rest! You see, our school hasn't had a decent fart in years. No one has been able to challenge Talula's dad in a long time! Even though she doesn't appreciate the art of the fart, she brags about her dad winning every year! She's the biggest meanie out there!
