It's not THE most optimal, but I've been starting with RADIO and CHUTE just to knock out the vowels along with two hot letters(Wheel of Fortune's old R S T L N E) and it's almost always enough to put me on track to win.
I like knocking out the five most common letters ETAON then following on with RISHDLU. Two words have ETAON, ATONE and OATEN. Lately I use the latter. The "optimal" word according to Wordlebot is PLATE. It doesn't work as well for me. I don't really like P and L and assume it's some locational advantage. It also only knocks out two of the three most common vowels. I like getting all three of them.

I think ATONE is probably the better of my two since words ending in E are pretty common, but I'm bored with it.

Undisputed King of math youtube, 3blue1brown, did this video a while back where he figures that the best starting word is "CRANE": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v68zYyaEmEA

Later he did another video though where he pointed out some issues with his approach: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRed0Xmc2Wg

I dont so much think that this is definitive as I just think its a really interesting question to think about how you would go about solving. It's an interesting look into the way that math is always useful, but how it can be limited in situations where the inputs and outputs arent well defined for that application. (Here the issue is, the answer word isnt chosen randomly, but is curated)

Personally when I play wordle I like to just pick a different word to start off every day that seems fun. E.G. today I had:
Grout, Feast, Flint
I think its kinda more fun when you dont just eliminate the same 5 letters everyday on round 1.

A fun challenge might be to start from a word randomly chosen from a Wordle word list:
https://gist.github.com/scholtes/94f3c0303ba6a7768b47583aff36654d (this is just one)
have you tried this? https://quordly.com/

It's just like wordle, except you play four boards at once, and get 9 guesses total. Its much harder and is a really different game. In order to win you have to spend 4 of your 9 guesses on clearing each board, so you actually only get 5 guesses that are wrong. Which means you need to maximize the information you get from each bad guess. It's like the opposite of "hard-mode" wordle. This imo is where strats like "AEGIS, MOUND" really shine.

Pretty sure my technique sucks though.
Ill give todays a rumble --
-- Boom!

Im not tryin to toot my own horn here, but toot toot :diddler:

seriously though I have like a 50% win rate on this mode. It aint easy. Especially when you get 2+ boards with duplicate letters. It didnt happen on this set, but sometimes you have really ambiguous situations where you are almost positive of what one board is, but you cant spend the guess, because if you're wrong by one letter then you screwed your opportunity on the other 3 boards. So, you look for efficient ways to guess your target letter on board A, by guessing a word thats also useful on boards B C and D. It's really strategically interesting, you have to make a decision about when youre going to quit going for information and start going for correct guesses

Surely 'slate' would be better? Or stale/steal/least?
It used to be slate. The bot for whatever reason changes its favorites from time to time.

Also obviously my first go at quordly was beginner's luck, as I blew the next three in a row badly.

I let the wordle bot teach me how to play better when I started and it’s stuck very consistently to crane as the best opener so I’ve kept to it. It seems to make it easier for me compared to the previous guesses I started with (and it goes fairly well unless I play while half asleep).

As for qourdly, I feel like the kid who’s at most bummed cigs at parties but was just introduced to designer heroin or something. Yikes. I’m stuck on my first one but I don’t care.

There's definitely a different "vibe" between the daily NYT & the ramshackle offbrand randomizers with ads. Different strat words seem to matter.

I'm glad on some small level that I sparked a little discussion, even only for a little while. The thread isn't just yellow & green boxposting.

Did it because of Haramburger supershat.

My guesses: -

TEARS - I seem to have the most luck with this, even though it was not the best pick today. 115 words left.

SHINY - I was mostly just trying to use another vowel and the Y. 3 words left.

SILLY - I knew the answer had to start with SI as it couldn't end in IY, and this was the first word that popped into my head. It took me only about 10 seconds to solve today, but really, SILKY would have been a better guess so I was a bit lucky to get it in 3 instead of 4.
