I've always played it that way since I found it existed shortly afterwards. It does still let you guess words you know are wrong, they just can't fail to have letters that are supposed to be in there. Before I figured out that mode existed, most of these guesses were mistakes anyway, so "hard" mode is kind of a misnomer.

If I already know the word has a certain letter, why waste a space re-using redundant information? I like to look at the letters eliminated to form a better guess, and use as few vowels as possible since reading words without vowels is fairly easy. Its also satisfying to me to see as few green and orange blocks before the whole row is green with the solution. Just another way of doing it.
