Thus ends a 118 game streak. Let this be a lesson to me: sometimes it‘s an adjective, even when there are likelier seeming nouns.

With regard to “ruddy,” I‘m surprised that the slang usage has eclipsed the literal meaning so much in some places. There’s only the literal meaning usage here (American West Coast). Do you think it’s derived from “bloody” (which is also only used literally here)?

I believe it's a euphemism for "bloody," which used to be considered profane, as it was a reference to the blood of Christ, much as "zounds" was short for "God's wounds."
