I have to run a heavy-weight IDE, two databases, a local AI (Qwen 3.5) and a bunch of other shit while working.
To "add more computer", I have to drop about £10-20k worth of equipment. Gaming on this machine barely pushes the machine.
Windows 11 is garbage. Unless you run the Windows 11 Debloater script, it uses way more resources.
No, they aren't. In fact, I've barely seen much real progress in performance since the early 2010s. My current machine is 7 years old (AM4 motherboard), and tbh, it wasn't much of an upgrade over my 4th gen i7 machine. The only reason I upgraded over the i7 is because I need more than 32 GB of RAM. The top-end AM5 CPU is about 1.5x the performance of the top-end AM4 CPU.
The concept of a package manager should have computer users baying for blood, but no, we just accept as normal that an entire army of developers has to maintain special builds of outdated software just so like your printer spooler won't immediately crash with an invalid function call or some shit.
Microsoft is not a monolith hivemind. Nothing that you've posted meaningfully relates to the Windows division. The wallpapers are something you'd have to manually download from MS Store and know they exist. You didn't even bother pulling up the pride flags on the taskbar from the Search widget, which only ever appeared for American users and the rest of the world got excluded from that campaign.
You don't want to play this gay little game because I can bring up examples of FOSStards forcing gay shit down people's throats, with no real way of avoiding it, with the developers actively telling people to fuck off if they complained about it, which is way worse than a corpo posturing for Pride Month to get some free DEI cash. Like Bazaar, which is the default GUI package manager on all the gaming meme distros today, having search bar customization, but every option is a mental illness flag and there's no option to just change the color or have a normal customization option. And they do it for free, they don't even get investor money for doing it. They're this fucking pozzed that they truly believe this shit. But in the end it's all a meaningless exercise and a good example for how the Windows vs Linux war is a culture war, and it's as pointless, time wasting and useless.
Look, I can go to /g/ whenever I feel like if I want to go down to this level of faggotry. By bringing the same type of drivel here you're doing exactly what the faggots are doing by shoving their identity politics in your face everywhere you go so you can't ignore them. so sincerely, go to the hardware store, buy a nice strong rope, hang a noose and hang yourself.
I'm interested, fire away. I have noticed the Steam client hogging close to one Gigabyte of RAM at times even when idle after their UI update, but six years ago it would top out at about 300 Megabytes.
There are many games that now run Chrome underneath just to handle things like the menus. So you have an old game like Warcraft III that was from 2002 and the newest version requires Chrome to run its simple in game menus and sucks down more RAM than was once the entire original game install files for WC3 and its expansion. Imagine telling gamers in the late 90s that you'd need an extra gig of RAM just to load the basic game and option menus because of how inefficient programming had become.
That is because they ditched thier existing GUI engine, VGUI (and also Microsoft' Trident web rendering engine) with what else, but an embeded version of CHROMIUM
This is also a huge issue with making it harder (or not possible) for Steam to work with older operating systems without advanced user knowledge. How Steam handles its GUI or downloads are not supported for older operating systems. So your perfectly working old machines will have static or failed libraries because of incompatibility issues that are closer to forced obsolescence than actual technological progress.
You don't know what you're talking about.
-You cannot make a local account on Home edition
-Every other edition has a local account option under log-in options
Which is significantly different from:
-You can't make a local account and you have to "trick" Windows to make one
You cannot make a local account when installing Windows 11 Pro. I know because I tried it last year.
I had to do the following:
Use Rufus to create the media and enable "allow local accounts on installation" (or something like that).
Unplug the Ethernet cable on my PC. If Windows sees a network connection, it would now allow you to use a local account and would only let you continue by making a Microsoft account.
Again, this was on the Windows Professional edition, which I have a valid licence for.
You want me to be as objectively true and accurate when I talk about FOSS, while you won't have the courtesy to do the same when it comes to proprietary software.
To which I say: go fuck yourself and gargle my balls. If you don't want me to talk about things Linux related I don't fully understand, then don't do the same when it comes to Windows.
I have worked with the Microsoft Stack for many years; I have probably installed and used every Windows OS since 98/NT 4.
I am an operating systems enthusiast. I have installed operating systems that you have probably not heard of. I have owned machines that you probably didn't know existed.
Instead of:
-opening the terminal
-typing "apt get install valve-proton"
-running "proton game.exe" and playing
You have to:
-install a proprietary launcher
-create an account on a proprietary platform
-log into the proprietary launcher with that account
-download Proton
-use the proprietary launcher to run a game
Which in a sane world would have Linux users rightfully telling Valve to shove their launcher up their ass and make it so that Proton can be distributed like any other package on any other distro. Quite a few of them do.
But since it's Valve, you have a double standard, and it's okay for a corporation to force you to use proprietary software with an account requirement to be able to play games.
Something that I don't have to do on Windows, as I don't need an MS account to install Windows, or to use winget to install whatever extra that I'd need.

My lga 1700 box rapes every single PC I've used before in my life. There is no comparison. That is another reason I chose Win 11, the BIG.little support for the P/E core setup. It genuinely does work.

I never claimed that FOSS was any better about pride stuff. I just dislike the "I am using x instead of y because it is based and christpilled" argument. Did you read the entirety of my previous post, or did you just look at what made you angry?
I use LTSC so generally the only program that would need to be signed in for a Microsoft Account would be Windows Store (if i reinstalled the bastard thing) but to my understanding on other editions such as Home and Professional most of those programs you are talking about mostly constitute the Microsoft Store, XBOX App, OneDrive and I believe that Windows Phone app? Most programs on Windows 10 do not require a Microsoft Account.
I am aware you can install stuff without a MS account. I install most stuff on Windows using chocolatey. I know you can use winget these days, but old habits die hard. I also use MSYS2 quite a lot.
What does happen is that things tend to try to tie you back into the account. e.g., I had an Xbox controller. To update the firmware on the Bluetooth dongle and the controller, I had to use a controller app (I forget the exact name; I used it about a year ago). It can be downloaded without the store, but it kind of requires a Microsoft account. You can technically use it without an account, but it will pester you literally every time you click anything in the interface. A firmware update was required to fix a disconnect issue with the Bluetooth dongle. If I was to log in via this App, it would then associate the Windows installation with a Microsoft account (I still have one) and convert my local account to an online account.
I cannot use fwupdmgr on Linux to do this either. My 8BitDo controller has no such restriction, and I updated it fine. So the Xbox controller went on eBay lol.
The thing about corporate pride is it turns out Republicans make B2B purchasing decisions, too, and there's only so much you can annoy your customers. The snapback is happening now. People are tired of going to conferences about mining equipment and having to hear about how awesome it is that the director of product management for Jetair Fans loves to get cum blasted up his asshole because the event happened to be in June.
With FOSS pride? There are no brakes on the poz train. None.

I have an Ultra 7 in my work laptop, and it is dog slow. Ironically running stuff through WSL (version 2) makes things faster, as the Linux VM performs better than the native machine. The same software stack runs faster on an 8th Gen i7 in a ThinkPad.
The Ultra 7 is much faster than the previous 13th Gen i7 I had, which developed a RAM issue and had to be returned to Dell.
@Slav Power the thing is i agree totally but i came to peace that valve sucks since they abandoned half life and left 4 dead for faggot shit like deadlock, but why get so mad at it?
ez fix, use GoG and Heroic games launcher and pirate steam games
Heroic games launcher is on Windows too and I use it to manage pirated games
alternatives exist to Steam and GoG doesnt force me to use steam social media or even their client and the GoG versions of games on Steam usually have specific patches and run better out of the box and GoG often has more sales than Steam since they are privately owned now
Heroic is built on Electron and GOG Galaxy on Qt WebEngine, so neither escape the Chromium dependency Slav was complaining about.
Speaking of Heroic launcher, I hear it frequently lauded as the best game launcher on Linux. When I played Call of Duty with it under Linux it was a major pain to get working. The game didn't "just work", as Linux fanatics like to say. I consulted ProtonDB and apparently CoD doesn't work on newer versions of Proton. The old Proton versions that people reported as working simply didn't exist as an option within Heroic, so I had to download several before finding one that worked. I also had to pass some extra OpenGL related parameters to get the game launching. Finally with the game launching, I applied a couple of fixes from PCGamingWiki to get widescreen and raw mouse input working.
Honestly, it was very offputting when I was dipping into some into gaming on Linux - the issue of game compability regressions in Proton/Wine is something never hear mentioned. But it must be a fairly common issue, otherwise why do all these launchers have the facility to download and pick previous versions of Proton rather than whatever is the latest? I'm guessing Steam handle this more transparently and maintain compability presets for each game. I can't imagine normie Steam Deck users coming from Windows and thinking it's a great experience having to look up Proton versions and compability settings for games from a 3rd party database.
Downloaded the newest 25H2 ISO and ran it on Hyper-V just to do this. With internet access, it wanted to download updates first, but I told it to postpone it just so that I can get to the OOBE.

Sure, if you choose "configure for personal use", then you don't get that option. But it doesn't mean that it's not present, period.
What's true is that they make it as obtuse as possible, more so than in 10's OOBE. You have to know which two options to select to get to the local account creator and it's bullshit.
What's false is your statement of "You cannot make a local account when installing Windows 11 Pro". I know because I've done it five minutes ago with the newest ISO.
The fact that Microsoft purposefully makes the OOBE obtuse to make it seem like you have to use the MS account doesn't change the fact that you're wrong, you've been confident in your false statement, and that Microsoft still gives you a way to set up a local account without having to resort to modifying the ISO before installation, or running the command line in OOBE.
not just jeet, woman minded too, so they can hire front-end webdevs who are mostly women, yeah there are men that do that shit too but HR firms don't just hire men unless he passes the billions of gay checkmarks, also he needs like 20 years experience in rust.

I didn't get on with the Heroic Launcher. Generally with Lutris you will have to fiddle with settings. A lot of stuff will just work with it. Other stuff depending on the age of the game is an utter PITA. Getting C&C Generals working properly was not fun.

Regarding the compatibility. Steam has a list of games which are officially supported; these can be filtered in your library by clicking the penguin icon in the library.
By default, IIRC, Steam will only install games that they've deemed to be fully compatible. You can manually enable Proton for all titles in the settings, IIRC, under compatibility. It will have a recommended version of Proton that it will download and install automatically. You can override this on a per-game basis.

So you have to use the magic combination of options which is non-obvious, otherwise known as a "workaround", and I don't believe (from everything I've seen) it was an option several months ago.
What's false is your statement of "You cannot make a local account when installing Windows 11 Pro". I know because I've done it five minutes ago with the newest ISO.

It has been an option ever since Windows 11 came out. But it's easy to believe that that's not the case if you let the media form your opinions.
Truth: Windows 11 Home won't let you set up a local account.
Lie: Windows 11 won't let you set up a local account.
News articles that reported on this always leave out the "Home" part that is crucial to what it is that's happening, and that's how misinformation spreads. But because it's Microsoft, any attempt to correct people so that they're mad about what's actually going on and not what the media told them is met with the response of "you're a paid shill". Emotions are the name of the game.
Touche. Mind telling me how I should form my responses so that it's clear that I only tolerate Microsoft's bullshit, not defend it? And every time something I write that is taken as "running defense" is me being autistically pedantic about what it is that Microsoft is fucking up, not saying that it's okay that they're doing it? Maybe a pre-written preamble in which I point out every single one of my beliefs to set the stage for the rest of the post? I feel like that should be the mandatory approach to online discussion nowadays.
I noticed that I shouldn't even bother in putting hints of how I hate what MS is doing.
So, you're not all that different from the rest of Linux users. I doubt that if I made a whole preamble before every post, it would've made a difference. And if it's read and actually considered, and I can't believe we have come to this as a civilization that it has to be said out loud, I am more than fucking aware that I'm a hypocrite myself and I let emotions steer me more than I should, I am very much self-aware of my own actions. It doesn't change the fact that I always get called a Microsoft shill for not having the exact same regurgitated opinion around everything Microsoft that everyone else online has, and that opinion is formed by misleading articles from journalists and no one's the wiser to not believe them since "Microsoft" is like a red tarp to a bull, all reason ceases to matter.
Again, let me know if having a preamble of my true opinions about Microsoft so that it's clear I hate them and only tolerate them would help, or would you be like everybody else and ignore any negative opinion that I have of Microsoft as the fact that I don't repeat what everyone wants to be repeated makes me a shill. Which is a rhetorical question since I know it doesn't fucking matter.
The fact that you're a fresh user and I see that you're reacting the same way as all the other users have reacted for years, be it here on other sites, makes me wish for that solar flare to wipe us all or all of our electronics out.
This is a memetic hazard. It instantly alters one's state of mind upon it's acknowledgement. That's the only conclusion that I can come to from all the hours wasted online, reliving the exact same discussions that always result in the same outcome, yet I always kid myself that it'll be different. It never it, never will be, I am insane, and the world is a looney bin.
