I don't see any particular advantage over a PC unless they get some incredible bulk rates on hardware, which seems unlikely. It would make zero sense to pay a premium for a box with "Steam" branding.

A console with all the advantages of PC gaming (free online, mods , Steam OS etc)
What you're describing is just a PC.

I think there is a decent amount of untapped demand for Steam in the living room. This looking like a console is more important than some people might think, a lot of people refuse to put a PC in their living room, or perhaps their significant others won't allow them to.

It's ok to like the Steam Machine because it's retard-friendly and an alternative to Windows.
In that case, this sounds perfect for me to transition into PC gaming. Evidently, you can install your own OS onto it. If this could do emulation and torrented PC games on top of the latest releases, then this would be an considerable buy for me.

The main appeals are its small form factor and user friendliness. It's an easy fit into the living room without the hurdle of actually looking for the parts and assembling them. The main drawback is the CPU and GPU being soldered onto the board, preventing future hardware upgrades.

Yeah I think there is too. Valve noticed that quite a few people were connecting their Steam Decks to their TVs to get Steam in the living room. It's somewhere in yesterday's GamersNexus video wherein they spoke to a few Valve engineers.

For someone looking for a mini PC under their TV I think it's going to be hard to find something better at whatever price it launches at.

According to GN, it uses SODIMM, presumably 2 slots, but you have to take it apart a bit. So there's the possibility of upgrading it to at least 128 GB RAM (using the new 64 GB modules) in the future after prices drop.

(More sane upgrades like 24, 32, 48, 64 GB are possible.)

If the price is right, it could make it one of the best computer for that price range. The other big competitor against this would be the Framework Desktop, and even this doens't have any SODIMM slots.

Still, it's most likely worth it if you're a console peasant looking to enlighten yourself, a babby wanting his first gaymurr peecee without breaking the bank, or someone happy to use a crappy laptop for most of their needs, except gaming.

I own the steam deck, and it can do those things out of the box. Steam deck is my ultimate handheld emulator already. I don't think I'll be buying the steam machine right away because my steam deck already lets me dock to TV for living room emulation up too 360/ps4 kinda but if you only have a pc its sill kinda appealing if you dont already have the deck

This is why I like it, I don't fuck with Windows and will struggle getting some games to run on Steam because I'm retarded and there are too many settings/tweaks needed for me to give enough of a fuck to bother with.

Price tag is still unconfirmed but is commonly speculated to be around 500–1k dollars. It's supposed to be equal or better than 70% of average steam user specs.

I think the alleged purpose of this product is for game developers to optimize and target that specific hardware rather than someone with high end hardware.

That is 100% of what Steam is going for here. After the massive success of the "SteamDeck Ready" tag it is a easy move for developer to create a "SteamMachine Ready" tag since it is just going to be a locked hardware that is better then the SteamDeck. And then any one who buys the SteamMachine basically has a console that can run almost every single game that has been created in the last 15 years (and more with emulation!).

I'm not going to pick up a steam machine. My PC is better than the specs. But I will be a steam controller.

Hopefully prices and pre orders drop soon.
