After months of speculation and hype Valve has finally decided to unveil it's new system , the Steam Machine.

A console with all the advantages of PC gaming (free online, mods , Steam OS etc)

A console powerful enough to emulate nearly all of the Switch 2s library, and of course since the default digital store is Steam that means that you also get all of Xbox's games + about 80% of PlayStation's first party games as well.

If this thing comes out at an affordable price point, like the Steam Deck was at launch, then this could easily disrupt the current console gaming market. Sony and Nintendo have gotten too complacent over the years, it's time for Gabe & Company to shake things up and dethrone these old dinosaurs ( Xbox is already a walking corpse so there's no point in even bringing them up in this conversation ).

Steam Deck had some kind of appeal to the casual gamer because of its portability, being powerful and having tons of support of the community, this just ain't it.

While I don’t have exact metrics on this, my impression is that the Deck’s customer base is largely comprised of people who already had a PC and wanted a portable device to go along with it (and for emulation). This loses that audience but could appeal to console gamers who want to dip their toes into to the PC space. Nonetheless, I doubt it will substantially rock the boat with respect to the console market, at best just increasing the yearly trickle into the PC player base.

Tmr sticks and back paddles means I’ll probably get one. It’s nice that Valve isn’t saying “fuck you” with their peripherals like the rest of the first parties.

It's ok to like the Steam Machine because it's retard-friendly and an alternative to Windows.

This is the main selling point. No Windows bloat or bullshit from Micro$oft. Just plugin, login to steam, and it just werks. Also Windows UI sucks when it comes to using it on a TV

Tmr sticks and back paddles means I’ll probably get one. It’s nice that Valve isn’t saying “fuck you” with their peripherals like the rest of the first parties.

Looks a lot like my Scuff gaming controller triggers.

Which I splurged on because all the buttons are mechanical switches... It feels real nice, but for the $180 I paid for it, it fuckin' better, lmao.

Shit if this thing feels good in the hand I'll probably pick one up.
 
Praise be to the GabeCube. They mentioned it has SD card slots for expanding storage and that got me thinking? How well do SD cards perform for actual PC games? They can't be that bad for somewhat demanding games because the Switch and Switch 2 also have SD card slots.

It doesn't support SD Express (which is what the Switch 2 is using) so SD cards should only be used for more light weight titles I'd say. The m.2 drive us user replaceable though.

Interesting design choice on their end unless SD express is proprietary. Of course the unit itself is user upgradeable because it's still a PC so it already has a leg up on normal consoles already. But so did the old Steam Machines. I helped someone upgrade the RAM on their Alienware Alpha years ago and it was pretty painless.
